Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

So we all remember the Striger from After Man by Dougal Dixion. My question is, is something like that possible or was Dixion just giving a false Evolution as I find that Animal highly unrealistic myself. What about the rest of you?

It isn't so unrealistic actually, is possible the evolution of an arboreal felid under the right circumstances, which could be the little lack of competitors as the development of appropriate adaptations.

So a Jaguar, Tiger, or Leopard, if given enough time, can evolve to be an Ape cat?

No, they are large specialized carnivorous felids, likely to become extinct in the long term, it is more likely that they would evolve from small felids like domestic cats.

if humans never existed, however, would such an idea still be possible without domestic cats?

Yeah, there are plenty of other small felids that can hypothetically make the jump.

I honestly think leopards are the least unlikely to become ape-like bauplan. However, that beings up the question of why would a felid evolve an anthropoid bauplan. Their current bauplan suits them just fine (which raises the question of what advantages grasping hands carry). If not, something like that of mustelines would suffice.

Well, a long reach could potentially aid in pursuing prey- for example, if it goes onto a branch too small for you, you can grab the branch and shuffle along with ypur feet on ligna firma to keep it from getting out of reach. Or perhaps a cheetah-like strategy of tripping things might be used, followed by a quick and careful descent to the ground.

Margays might be a good ancestor, they have reversible ankles which allows them better mobility in the trees

Alternatively it go the opposite and have a monkey go with a felid-like lifestyle, like chimpanzees or atelines.

I don't think they could evolve a primate like niche because all cats are obligate carnivores, including pet cats.More apropiate animals could be rodents and marsupials given enought time.

Jewel you are missing one small bit, that it is primate like only in locomotion, it is still carnivore.

It will still not fit the cat.The actual cat body structure is perfectly adapted for hunting in all kinds of places, including trees. Some of them actually.
