| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! I have been wanting to start new project alongside my current ones in the summer holidays (which is a week away) but I have so many ideas that I don't know which one to do. I think it is best to do the one you all would be most interested in, so I set up this poll. 1. A project set on planet FMM UV-32, which contains dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures and is the setting for the Carnivores games. However, many of them are inaccurate (the Spinosaurus in the game is a prime example of this), and so it explores their true ancestries, as well as their biology. Set up similarly to Expedition. 2. A world set in the far future, around 500 million years. A mass extinction 200 million years earlier wiped out 70% of all life. Now, it is a hothouse world, similar to the Eocene, and has been for around 70 million years. The continents are unrecognisable, and the organisms that live on, survivors of the extinction, are extremely derived. Biodiversity is at an all time high. 3. This project diverges from our world sometime during the Carboniferous. The first change was that amniotes never evolved. The second change began at the end of the Carboniferous, where instead of cooling, the climate remained largely consistant. It has been warming slowly ever since, and by the modern day the climate is in a thermal maximum. Earth is covered in swamp and rainforest, and amphibians and arthropods are the dominant life on land. 4. A terraformed world where the only tetrapod introduced is a single species of macropod (probably a forest wallaby, like a Red-necked Wallaby, Black-striped Wallaby or Parma Wallaby). From simple beginnings, they quickly take over the planet, from the trees to the sea to the sky. Much of the flora and accompanying fauna introduced is also from Australia to help the wallabies feel at home. 5. An alternate timeline where the Eocene-Oligocene extinction never happened. Thus, much more archaic fauna survives. The world is warmer, but has been cooling since the Eocene. 6. Instead of another lesser K-Pg, a harsher one. Out of the tetrapods, only a single species of mammal, turtle and frog survives, and several lizards. 7. Set 200 million years in the future. A mass extinction caused by rapid desertification occurred 80 million years earlier, but conditions never improved. Inhabitants of the planet are superbly adapted for these conditions, but are descended from only 10% of life that survived the extinction. Almost all of the land is covered in bleak desert. There are two supercontinents, one made of Australia, Eurasia and Africa and another made of North America, South America and Antarctica. Zealandia is still isolated. So, what's your favourite one? Pick one or two and submit it in the poll. If you have any questions, ask them here. I would also be interested in hearing your thoughts about them. |

So after day 1# of the poll, it seems 3, 4 and 6 are tied with 2 votes. It is certainly still going, I'm hoping more people can submit votes. I will announce when the poll is finished, which will be before the weekend (Friday at the most). It will be stopped once one premise clearly has dominion over the others. Until then, vote away! EDIT: The no Eocene-Oligocene extinction premise (5) has made a surprising comeback, from 1 vote when I first posted this to 4 at the time of editing. Perhaps it will hold its lead, or maybe the Harsher K-Pg or other premise will catch up. We'll see. |

Well, it seems we have a clear winner. You'll see the No Eocene-Oligocene Extinction topic posted in 1-2 weeks. Thank you to all who voted (also voting after this post is pointless because I have screenshot the final poll already). |

How about something about fictional creatures from videogames such as Half Life? You could do a project about Xen Dimension, and it's history and organisms. |

It has already been decided that I'm doing a project where the Eocene-Oligocene extinction never happened. Thanks for the suggestion, but it is a bit late. |
