| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! - Your entry can be future evolution, habitable zone, alternate evolution and even alternate universe. - Genetic engineering is not allowed. This isn't a COM but I figured we had the Ameri-COM so why not do a larger scale competition? Edited by Lowry, Nov 1 2017, 12:53 PM.

New Wannan New Wannan is one of the countless seeded worlds we have discovered. What separates New Wannan is its distance from the rest of our galaxy, with some of the oldest fauna to be seeded, that of the age of dinosaurs. Being a human civilisation planet first and a research base latter, you can understand how some clashing between our research and the local populace (which are a human civilisation of medieval standards of technology). Obviously directly explaining to the ‘local humans’ that we are researchers from their home-world’s space-faring civilisation goes directly against the Scholastic Scriptures. We are left to explore the planet using only our knowledge and local technology, meaning we can only send researchers of a similar ethnicity to that of the local population, thus much of our team is of Japanese or Korean ancestry, with a few Indonesian and Chinese members from their respective colony worlds. Whatever higher-extra-terrestrial being created New Wannan certainly had a thematic way of treating their experiments; with Asian descent humans and the primary life used to seed the planet being directly from the fossil record of the Wannan of Old Earth. Thusly the sole ancestor of the terrestrial vertebrate life present on New Wannan is Wannanosaurus, a presumed omnivorous individual of the family Pachycephalosauridae. We truly have no idea how long the native Wannan people have been present on the desert planet, but the development of their civilisation around the Habbahai Sea has had little to no impact on the further-out regions of the world, allowing some research to be done on the more remote, inaccessible areas where no locals can spot our superior technology. Domestication of local fauna has proved to be an interesting topic of research, and abducted livestock/pets have served as a brilliant study group for selective breeding in seeded Earth life. We have finally compiled a basic list of the lifeforms we believe were used to initially seed New Wannan, however the list could be incomplete and subject to error due to the inability to excavate for fossils within the majority of the planet. Here is our simplified version. -Wannanosaurus yansiensis -Notacanthiformes x4 -Anguilliformes x4 -Cypriniformes x3 -Epiprocta x2 Not worthy of note, or easily yet identified; -Various Sea Algae -Various Flowering Plants -Numerous Insect Species ![]() We set out from the largest city on New Wannan, Thassi, as part of a large caravan of spice sellers on their yearly commute to the city of Amic. We mounted what obviously was a pachycephalosaur, colloquially known as a Jube, but known by us researchers as Cameliwannan pipio domestica. They stood roughly at around six foot, mine being rather large in comparison and standing at seven. Upon their head there was no exposed skull dome, though the obvious presence of one beneath the skin was marked out by two horns that grew in a slight spiral like an Earth goat. Jube arms are surprisingly longer than their fossorial ancestors, occasionally supporting themselves upon them when having loads added to their humped back (which presumably contained a fat store), or being mounted. Their feet were very large, with an increased surface area possibly aiding for weight distribution amongst the sand. My own Jube was covered in head to ankle in a fine coating of sandy fibres, with darker stripes being visible across his back once my saddle had been removed. Despite these features, the creature was surprisingly underived from prehistoric members of their group, they were herbivorous other than any invertebrate matter they happened across while eating, although we would later see in some other specimens of the planet how far evolution had taken Wannanosaurus. Five minutes of travelling and we happened across a small Ornithischian dinosaur hopping between sacks of spice at a nearby market stall, where it then ran into hiding. It returned moments later with a smaller, bloodied specimen, with a similar disposition, in its mouth. Screeching of the prey animal alerted a few more of the larger specimen to move in, where they noisily argued over the scraps of meat the prey item presented. All the while the stall owner had fetched his broom and was now managing to beat a rather unfortunate predator into a bloody mess. The creatures within the small scene we saw would, upon further study, be ‘Wanrats’, an equivalent to that of our rodents within the desert city’s ecology. The relatively larger predatory Wanrats, or Tiji in native, are opportunistic hunters and generalists, eating anything smaller than themselves from fellow Wanrats to fruit or grain. Tiji sport a darkened coat, similar to that in colour to a rat, with long keratinous spines being present within their covering. But the similarities between Wanrats and rodents go further, with Wanrats having a distinct dentition in comparison to other Wannanosaurus descendants on the planet, with the beaked tip of their mouth ending in a slight curve, which splits at the end to form two pseudo-canines. The actual canines within the mouth of the Tiji are actually atrophied and rather normal in size, possibly used for continued holding rather than the cutting and tearing of the frontal beak. The second creature we saw in the encounter, the one that perished, much to the chagrin of the stall-owner, was a domesticated Hija. Hija fulfil a role similar to mice in the wild, but here in the city they are raised and kept as pets. They, like their fellow Wanrats have a modified beak ending in a split pair of pseudo-teeth that is a more direct analogue to the incisors of rodents. Research into the evolution of the group as a whole would prove that the canine-like beak within a Tiji is actually formed from the beak-teeth of more generalist Wanrats. This particular Hija was pinkish in colour. We made the journey rather steadily after that and experienced little to no new discoveries up until the day before we arrived at Amic, where we were introduced to what we can to assume were some of predatory creatures found in the Amican scrubland, with Amic being a relatively green area when compared to the rest of the desert region. The creatures were almost like hyenas in vocalisation, but when seen were far more raptorial in nature, they held themselves rather like how I would imagine a crocodylomorph on the verge of attaining bipedalism would, trotting around on two legs for fast sprinting, but skulking around on all fours when a steadier pace was required. It was dark, but within the dimly lit region of the campfire I could make out their form. They were like a scaled down Jube, with an elongated beak tipped in a slight curve, common to Terran birds of prey. They had two particularly large quills extending from either shoulder and stood roughly as high as my family golden retriever would on four limbs. I wanted to get closer but the caravan leader barked me back towards my tent. I heard animalistic whimpering and crying, as well as the yelling of men from my tent but was not permitted to view the excitement first hand. In the morning the caravan set off again, one of the younger and smaller Jubes, a juvenile used only for hauling, was missing and one of the larger bulls seemed to be carrying a far more significant load than it had previously. My inner drive to avoid solemnity stopped me from dwelling on thoughts pertaining to this particular juvenile and its fate, so me and my Jube pushed forwards to the head of the caravan. Arriving in Amic was quite something, the city wasn’t quite as lively as Thassi, but instead had an almost castle-like appearance. Guards were mounted on what I can only assume were militaristically bred Jubes, that sported bronze coverings and pierced horns covered in jewellery. We unloaded our spice and began preparations of the second part of our journey, to an uninhabited oasis far away from the city of Amic. From Amic we had been given authorisation to utilise some of our researcher technology, which arrived in a parachute drop far enough away from the city as to not be seen, and if it was seen it would only be by passing nomads who would attribute it to a shooting star. There we were given surveillance cloaks and stun rifles in case of any encounters with further hostilities. We trekked through the desert at a rather slow pace before we reached the oasis, it wasn’t much to look at and was almost underwhelming in comparison to the cities of the Habbahai Sea. There, the lights and hustle and bustle of the city allowed us to disregard the lacklustre biodiversity. But out here in the oasis, the only welcome sight was that of wild fauna, not that which has been living off of the back of human expansion. Out here we found various succulents and cacti, trees and plant-life that we were comfortable with, Khaled even tried some light-bulb shaped red fruits and was shocked to find that they were rather spicy, obviously a native representative of the spice bearing plants harvested by humans here on New Wannan. We set up camp under the shade of a thorny tree, our tents pitched and the creature comforts of our communicators allowing us to contact home and play a few games. I myself, chose to send a message to my brother who was currently researching seeded life present on the moon named Anansi. As I set to sleep however, I was awoken to the drone of an animal I had not yet heard and rushing out of my tent I could see what was making these noises. They were roughly the size of deer and were once again morphologically similar to that of Jubes, but held features that also made them identify closer to Wanrats. These creatures wore tusks that flanked either side of their beaks and were almost shovel-like in nature. Their forelimbs were sturdy, muscular and their hands flattened into paddle-like structures. We had set camp incredibly close to a site of creatures I personally named Tombers, pronounced like tomb rather than tom-b. These creatures bury themselves within the sand during the day and dig themselves out at night. We watched them munch upon various fruits and leaves of the local flora and they could even bare the heat produced by the lightbulb fruit Khaled had consumed. It seemed that the very environment around us had burst into light. Flowers had bloomed on certain succulents and hummingbird organisms were flitting about them gathering nectar and helping aid in the plants pollination. I was getting my nets from my tent when one of my colleagues, Alex, screamed. I ran outside to see what had troubled her and all I saw was her gaze fixed to behind my tent. I turned and almost soiled the clothes I was wearing. It stood at a size that far exceeded my own Jube, which I would later find dead around the back of my tent, with a beak homologous to that of the Terror birds of Earth. Atop its head were horns and a frill that were remarkably similar to that of a Triceratops. It lurched forward, not concerned with me or my comrades, but making a mad dash for the Tombers that grazed nearby. It gored a juvenile on its left horn and subsequently began snapping and stamping at and on the various other Tombers that were too slow to escape it. We ran from the site that night and never looked back, being picked up, dehydrated and exhausted by our rendezvous shuttle a few kilometres away from the oasis we camped at. None of us will be a part of the return expeditions to New Wannan and I praise Muhammed, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, that I never experience such a creature again.
