| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! I really sympathize with the new plant group idea being incredibly underused. You already barely see plants in spec, which I find weird, since they're a vital part of the ecosystem. Plus, carnivores evolve with herbivores, so herbivores must evolve with plants, leading to some weird forms. Hey, in the Triassic, no one would've thought of flowers or bees, would they? So, if you include plants and continue evolving them (which is hard, admittedly), it's not detracting from the project; it's making it more plausible. |

The truly rare thing in specevo is sticking to one project for a long time and really developing it beyond some initial sketches. Only a handful of those. I've found that exploring such a project, be it Snaiad, Furaha or Sheatheria, is much more interesting to me than said sketches, no matter the initial idea behind a project. |

I think the idea of remote islands inhabited mostly by reptiles gets little attention. I know birds are more likely to become the dominant vertebrates on islands like in New Zealand and mammals being represented by marine species (cetaceans and pinnipeds) and bats, but you never see any projects that focus on reptiles. That kind of bothers me |

Speaking of islands, would it be possible for an island to have 0 vertebrates? Or is it inevidible for them reach it? |

Vertebrates in the form of lizards and mammals can be wind-blown and carried by sea, just as insects can. It'd need to be very isolated or very small. But, there are still birds that can just fly over to it. I seriously don't understand your aversion to vertebrates. I'm not particularly fond of mammals, but you don't see me constantly asking about how to remove them. Edited by Talenkauen, Jul 17 2017, 08:12 PM.

I don't actually ask these questions that much. I guess it just seems like a lot because I'm the only one who asks them. Plus, if I truly had an aversion to vertebrates, I wouldn't have made the Tyrant King Salmon. |

Here's a concept I don't think I've ever read on this site: plate tectonics, as in new tectonic plates forming. Minor plates like the Somali Plate didn't exist until 10 million years ago, so there's no reason to assume we wouldn't see new ones develop in at least 25 million years. |

I had an idea where Tasmania split from the Indo-pacific plate and went in its own direction, therefore dodging Asia and being a veritable 'lost-world'. Not sure if it is plausible though. |
