| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. So when I started Nereus, it was just an exercise in developing a bauplan for a dragon that didn't conform to the traditional six-limbed imagery we're all so familiar with. Once that was established, I began to wonder what forms such a bauplan would have derived from, and that's where things exploded. Research into the planetology and cladistics, and a goal for a thorough ecological exploration led to a goal of 100 species. It was a momentous day when I finally reached that, but (perhaps with a certain degree of insanity) I felt like the project just wasn't finished. I'd learned so much from the process of making Nereus that I wanted to see what would happen if I took things up a notch. Thus, what I've been calling "Nereus 1.5" was born. The first stage of it has the nereophytes, and you've seen me slogging through that for, what, more than five years now? Not an impressive production rate, is it? So I'm going to get the ball rolling on the second stage: 50 more nereids to more fully flesh out discrete ecologies and hopefully explore some more spectacular denizens of this planet. Here are some things to look forward to: - 4 Aquatic biomes: Freshwater, Coastal, Inshore, Pelagic, and Abyssal. Many of the marine nereids you've seen so far comprise the Freshwater, Coastal, and Pelagic zones, but the hatchet whale will form the apex of the Inshore category, and the crown of thorns will be the hub of the Abyssal "wheel", as it were. - An expansion of the Savanna biome. In my efforts with this project, I factor not only biodiversity but also relative surface area when considering the size of each biome entry; Savanna will be getting some love. ![]() - Subdivision and expansion of the Lantern Forest and Sog Basin biomes. These have turned out to be the centerpieces of the project, both for their relative biodiversity and because of their unique developments. So each one is going to be split in half ("Floor" and "Canopy" for the Lantern Forest, and "Swamp" and "Trees" for the Sog Basin) and expanded to 16-17 species each. - New species will be found among the nidovalves, triradiopods, pseudocoles, and other popular clades. When all this is done, we can start talking about Nereus 2.0 (yes, I know, I have a problem). |

I fail to see a problem. I see dedication. (as for "not an impressive production", on the contrary - given the range of novel forms and niches filled, its most impressive) *suspects one species will be "Genera lagasii"(sp) after Emeril* ![]() |

Oh yisss. This is gonna be good. The original Nereus was actually one of the first projects I read, even before I joined the forum! Can't wait to see what's next. |

It's a thin line between that and obsession. ![]()
Why's that? I'm afraid I missed the reference...
I'm glad you've enjoyed it! If all goes well, this should be more of the same.

Lagasse - his trademark phrases are "bam!" and "kick it up a notch" - https://youtu.be/8dxpMxULHnA it was funny to my brain at the moment; now...eh. sorry. |

Ah, from when I said, "...if I took things up a notch." Yeah, I'm familiar with Emeril, I just didn't spot the connection. Now I want to see if I can cram another nereid in there with an Emeril reference.

Nereus is amazing, so I'm glad you're going to keep working on it. The only thing that makes me sad about Nereus is the Lantern Forest, because I came up with a similar idea, but you were first.

I'm sorry! I hate it when that happens! Maybe your lantern forest explores some different ideas than mine? I don't hold a copyright on it. Go ahead and speculate! Maybe you'll come up with something more interesting. |

Thanks for the permission, Empyreon. It is bound to happen as a part of my project (Scosya) one way or another. Maybe it will be less lanterns and more forest.

I suspect each of you will have a different idea of what a lantern forest is, even if the same name is applied to both ecosystems. (tempted to point out how "rainforest" varies a great deal, even on Earth - the redwoods of Washington State are a different system from the cenotes of Mexico - and those are on the same planet) |
