| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. The Perittocene![]() The morning is crisp and warm. The flowers are just blooming, the grass rustling with growth and life. Birds can be heard singing their hearts out. Some new, some old. A male British Formicoduck has just gone into mating colours, searching for a mate. Little to his knowledge, the insectivore has disturbed a giant predator. This is the European Crocomole. He is huge for his kind, and is ancient to. Startled, the Formicoduck flashes his head-crests, warning the Crocomole to back off. Annoyed, the Crocomole lets loose a loud bark, that sends the Formicoduck packing. Otherwise, this has been a normal day for the Formicoduck, who has been searching for a mate throughout the morning light. Other critters begin to stir. Unlike the Crocomole, these animals have not been disturbed from their slumber. A juvenile Pygmy Slothbird opens his eyes from his tree-top slumber. Shifting his body ever so slightly, he begins his cycle once again. The bird seems to have heard the argument between the Formicoduck and the Crocomole. There is something that one should note, though. What about the usual fauna of Europe? Where’s the giant Mammals that once roamed here, such as the Deer, Bison, or Bear? They’re all gone. They vanished a long time ago. Now, new, weirder creatures held up their domain. Imagine a world beyond imagination. One would think that such a world only belongs in an alien planet or alternate timeline. But, to ones’ surprise, this is, in fact, the future. All of earths climates have been marginally unchanged, one would find. As in the above narration, the most notable differences are the most visible forms of life, such as various “Reptiles”, birds, and mammals. In fact, it seems as though birds have out competed mammals in some instances. The events leading up to the evolution of such bizarre fauna have been described as adaptive evolution. It seems as though the vague demise of Man has allowed fauna to bounce back in an odd variety of forms. Whilst the fall of man has removed a lot of species, those that survived now have a chance to thrive. This is the Perittocene, the "odd era." Table of Contents Author's Note

One of the most eye-catching thing of the Perittocene is its fauna. Due to the Polar regions of Earth in the Holocene (Antarctica and the Arctic) losing most of their ice. This resulted in the flooding of a lot of continents. However, this proved to be helpful for the Perittocene's fauna. Most notably, there are well over 200 species that weigh more than a ton. It seems that the world has reverted to Cretaceous times in terms of geography and atmospheric conditions. The world of the Perittocene is an old one, lasting for 50 million years. Even after the amount of fauna presented, there is still loads to be discovered. These following creatures are just the tip of the iceberg. --- Flora Fungi Invertebrata Amphibia "Reptilia" Aves Mammalia Ragnaroks- The unexpected ones. --- Geography of the Perittocene Edited by Dapper Man, Apr 20 2017, 11:01 PM.

Seeing as some Arthropod relatives might be involved in the project, I thought I'd put Stem- instead of just Arthropoda. Don't worry, Arthropods will be getting some love

Perittocene Geography![]() The Perittocene is a weird world indeed. The oxygen level of the Perittocene is much higher than today. Whereas todays oxygen content is 21% today, it is estimated to be a high 35%. This means that there is a lot more flora concentrated along the poles. In fact, both Antarctica and the Arctic have lost most of their ice caps. This meas a lot more areas of the world are flooded, as shown in the above map. Appalachia and Laramidia: These two main continents are what consist of North America during the Perittocene. LIke most continents, it has suffered from marginal flooding. Mexico and California have been separated from the main land, most likely due to the substantial flooding. Most of the environment is coniferous forest, which seems to be the most common environment on the planet. South America: One again, South America has split from North America, forming its own island continent. The Amazon Rainforest has fallen and risen multiple times, with the Perittocene's Amazon only rising 10 million years ago. Grassland, along with the Rainforest, are South Americas most common habitats. It and Zealandia are the most common sources of Antarctica's biodiversity. Mesis: Meaning "Middle" in Greek. This island formed roughly 20 million years ago. This island consists of Coniferous Forests and Deciduous Forests. It is located in between Eurafrica and North America, hence the name. Another factor to its name is the fact that its fauna seems to be dominated by boar descendants. Various birds are also present, as with bats. Surprisingly, Mesis lacks the dominant mainland fauna has, for unidentifiable reasons. Eurafrica: Consisting of Eurasia and Africa, this is the most biodiverse continent in the Perittocene. Hosting over 50000 species, with over 100 of those weighing over a ton. Coniferous forests extend to northern Mongolia. In the Perittocene, the closest thing to deserts proper are sub-deserts, and even those are mostly covered in oasis. Indonesia has grown in size, combining Eurafrica with Australasia. Africa has collided with Eurasia, forming the titular continent. Half of Africa has split of from the mainland, forming Ipharadesi, meaning "middle" in Zulu, a native African language. Australasia: Consisting of Australia and Indonesia, this is another bizarre continent of the Perittocene. This is one of the most biodiverse of the Perittocene's continents, and hosts some of the most unique fauna. Grassland and deciduous forests consist of most of the continent. It, Eurafrica, and Zealandia, are home to the largest Mangrove swamps in the world. Zealandia: During the course of mans reign, New Zealand was found to be growing in size once again. Now, in the Perittocene, the island has grown into a sub-continent called Zealandia. Once again, it is an island of birds, with its native Psittaciformes forming most of its fauna. Coniferous forests, Mangroves, and Grasslands consist of most of the environment. Antarctica: Antarctica has had a troubled history. Starting of as a promising continent, eventually, however, it became a cold, unforgiving land. This is what it was for the final days of the Cenozoic. 10 million years after, however, it began to thaw, losing 50% of its ice sheets in the next 10 million years. By the Late Holocene (25 million years hence), it had lost over 50% of its ice sheets, allowing for the colonization process to begin. By the Perittocene, it is still occuring, with more ice vanishing each year. Most of its fauna has arrived from South America and Zealandia, but some has also arrived from Australia and Madagscar. Coniferous forests take up the chunk of Antarcticas environment, with only a small pocket being deciduous forest. --- Here it is, the Perittocene's first update. Leave thoughts and stuffs

Before you tardigrade speccing, I must warn you about something. Tardigrades experience what is called 'eutely'. It's when an organism has a fixed cell count upon reaching maturity. This is very common in microscopic animals such as rhombozoans, rotifers, larvaceans, gastrotrichs, many nematodes, and yes, even tardigrades. |
