Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Hey!

So I'm not a scientist. God help me, I'm a lawyer by trade. Southern U.S., specifically.

I'm also a fantasy writer. Now, don't run! I'm not asking you guys to help me justify dragons or some such nonsense. I have entirely different nonsense I need your help figuring out.

The core of it is this: I'm wanting to add bipedal dogs to a book- specifically, I'm thinking of them as canine velociraptors, bulldog-like bipedal beasts that run on two legs and drag prey down.

I'm curious as to how an effectively theropod-ish body plan might evolve in dogs, or at least, how theropod/bird styled bodies evolved at all.

Don't worry about the human element to this- it's a non-issue. The continent this is happening on is very close to Africa in nature- a big desert, than savannahs bleeding into the wide variety of forests, with some swamps along the (rather large) rivers.

Noone here ever claimed to be a scientist. Most of of us are just normal people, that just happen to be really into speculative evolution. Just do proper research, ask for help if need be, and you'll be fine.

That being said. If you have single projects questions/small project questions, you can visit this thread:

I think is very highly unlikely that any canid would develop a bipedal stance because most canids already have cursorial limbs, stride rate is favored by reducing limb mass and stride length is gained by increasing limb length, most large predatory canids already have long thin limbs to sustain stamina in long hunting chases, how would becoming bipedal actually help? and why would they be bull dog like? they have breathing problems and very stout limbs, they would easily fail to track, chase, and ambush prey.
