| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Prologue Sometime in the near-to-distant future, Humanity will create a weaponize lethal pathogen of drug resistant bacteria. Originally used for war, several samples have been stolen by an eco-terrorist group to bring about the end of human existence. The New Earth Order (NEO) released the pathogen in every major city across the planet, mortality rate was in the 99 percentile. As a result with a now smaller number of human survivors the ecosystems slowly recover. With the first couple of years after the pandemic, the surviving Humans would still have access to guns and petrol-based fuel for vehicles and domesticated horse. When the fuel runs out and bottles of oil becoming scarce, vehicular transportation falls out of practice, the remaining humans fall back on horses. Without fully functional hospitals, modern medicine is now impossible to achieve as former minor illnesses become increasingly hazardous as well as childbirth. Antibiotics and other forms of medicine that were made prior to the pandemic become increasing rarer and rarer. Canned foods and Guns last for a bit longer but within a 40 years, all canned foods would be consumed and all Grade A ammo for Guns would run out. Human population drops to pre-civilization levels and within the next 100 years humans slowly began to readopt more basic weapons such as Spears and Bows. Nuclear reactors without any maintenance start to meltdown, killing everything in the vicinity as the radioactive waste seeps into the local water supply. Satellites and space stations renter the earth's atmosphere, Buildings decay as no one is able to keep them maintained until eventually the whole world is reclaimed by nature. All that's left are the great skyscrapers, Great Dams, and other large buildings but they too will eventually succumb to the elements. Most breeds of domesticated animals either perish or become feral: smaller dog breeds learn to live in burrows or natural ground holes to escape the larger dogs, Cats already good at climbing trees and hiding from predators, the rest of the Pigs become Wild Hogs, Cows and Goats suffer a population decrease but eventual thrive in the wild, Sheeps thrive in the more colder environments, chickens thrive as they can replenish their numbers relatively fast. 1,000 years later. Most of human made structures are now gone, reclaimed by the wild. Since then former livestock animals have adapted to this new human free world. Cattle began to resemble their ancestors the Auroch with several subspecies retaining the diverse horns of their domesticated ancestors. Several new Dog subspecies pop up, with larger dog breeds either mixing with wolves or becoming their own species while smaller dogs species become specialized burrow dwellers. Cats continue on as tree dwellers, only coming down to catch fish, birds, or small mammals. What little remains of the Humans, they are a small number, still hunters and gathering tribes but have at least recovered somewhat....However. A local earthquake sends a tremor to the San Andreas fault-line triggering a series of volcanic eruptions around the Ring of Fire, including the eruption of Mt. Fuji.. Global temperatures plummet, further decreasing the remaining humans. A new Ice Age has come. "Familiaris" already is the name of a subspecies within the Canis genus. Giving a species that name within the same genus it already exists in might be seen as confusing, so I'd advise changing it. |

ok, I changed it I replaced the asteroid with an earthquake when I thought about it for a while, i came to the conclusion that would of been too much for the recovering population. Edited by Xenotaris, Feb 23 2017, 09:18 AM.
