| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Long, Long ago, before echinoderms ruled the sky, before Tartigrades developed sentience, and before insects ruled the world, mammals walked the earth for millions of years, until the great gamma burst that is. Mammals used to be one of the most successful creatures in history, with many strange adaptations not found on any living creature today. Mammals ranged from small scurrying creatures, to monstrous horned beasts with a taste for flesh. Some crack pot scientist believe that they may had even developed sentience, which is hardly likely, seeing as how no mammal had the key eight legged Cron body plan, which is widely known to be the perfect body plan. Mammals did not rule the earth alone however. They shared the earth with other creatures like Birds and Reptiles, both equally strange and fearsome. Reptiles were likely close but primitive relatives to mammals, and birds were probably highly derived reptiles. Many birds had membranous wings, used to fly (obviously), or sometimes swim. Some birds didn't fly at all, but stalked the land as vicious predators. Reptiles were mostly predatory, and ate all manner of creatures. It is widely known that reptiles had scales, while birds had smooth skin covering their bodies. Mammals, had fur or skin depending on the species. At this point in the earths history (the eocene), arthropods were very small. Our ancestors were microscopic, being barely, if at all, visible to the naked eye. As it is known, Mammals, Birds, And Reptiles had backbones, and were called vertebrates. The only living vertebrates today are fish, but they are very rare, and only found in a few environments, so it is unlikely you would see one while playing by a river or strolling through the woods. In this series, we will be exploring life before the Burst Extinction event, when the earth was ruled by vertebrates, and when mammals walked the earth. Welcome to the Eocene. |
