Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I thought this was a thread for biological plot twists as opposed to memery and inside joking

-A specialized clade of trilobites still survives in the abyssal depths of the deep sea. Relying on chemosynthetic bacteria for their nutrition, they are restricted to hydrothermal vents, where no fossils of them form with any regularity.
-Amphibians and amniotes are sister clades instead of one being a derived subset of the other - early amniotes retained the scales of their tetrapodomorph ancestors while amphibians lost them.

Some of my ideas (nothing real yet, but soon):
Refugium: A last chance for collapsing ecosystems and their inhabitants.
Pansauria: A terraforming project featuring the evolution of exactly one animal - the marine iguana.
Mars Renewed: An insight into the life of Mars thirty million years after its terraforming by humankind.
Microcosm: An exceedingly small environment.
Alcyon: A planet colonized by species remodeled into new niches by genetic engineering.
Oddballs: Aberrant representatives of various biological groups compete and coexist.

..and probably some other stuff at some point (perhaps a no K-T project). Stay tuned!

Humans and their close relatives are not apes but rodents
Projects
Punga: A terraformed world with no vertebrates
Last one crawling: The last arthropod

ARTH-6810: A world without vertebrates (It's ded, but you can still read I guess)

Potential ideas-
Swamp world: A world covered in lakes, with the largest being caspian sized.
Nematozoic: After a mass extinction of ultimate proportions, a single species of nematode is the only surviving animal.
Tri-devonian: A devonian like ecosystem with holocene species on three different continents.

Caecelians are actually derived lungfish that convergently evolved tetrapod-like traits.

Mammals are closely related to Amphisbaenians.

now that's a reference I can get behind

-Ichthyosaurs survived to the Oligocene; an abyssal lineage survived the Cenomanian-Turonian event and then the K-Pg, were pushed out of that environment by better-adapted sauropterygians, and proceeded to make small inroads to recovery before being rapidly quashed by the first small odontocetes.

Rhinogrades was actually a completely factual account. Or if you want a psychological plot twist instead, the author believed it was fully factual. Wrap your mind around that one.

What was that? That couldn't of been serious.

Take a look at the date at which the article was published - it explains it all.

-Marsupial moles are neither marsupials nor dryolestids, but haramiyidans.
-Galloanserae represents a third group of birds between paleognaths and neognaths.

Tiiktalik(sp) is a hoax, and everyone actually evolved from Ichthyostega.

except the sharks, who evolved from Bathystega.

Manospondylus, Nanotyrannus, and Tyrannosaurus are all completely distinct species, and Hell Creek had three large predatory tyrannosaurs.
