Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Theirs was a suicide mission. Their commander was informed of an assault that would hit an important mountain pass in northern Akoum. Only a single cohort was mustered to defend it, and most knew what was to come: a desperate fight for mere existence. The group prepared its defenses, making a phalanx that spanned the whole pass' width, and waited. Only smaller spawn were spotted regularly, simply skittering about a half a kilometer away.
All was refreshingly well. Their confidence was growing, as well as their hope.

Then the attack happened. Only a few drones approached, and the lines held for the most part. A few men were lost to their flaying tentacles and otherworldy being, but the lines quickly reformed. Soon another attack was repelled, with a few more casualties. And another. And yet another.
Eventually, the men were only down to about three or four dozen. Only one thing yet dare challenge them: a monstrous lizard-like thing with no face, many legs, and a crown of darkness above its head. It stood alone, standing above the small phalanx. Thinking to themselves, This is but one beast, and we are so many to take it down, they began a slow march towards the creature. Soon, their march turn into a full-frontal charge upon the beast, spears bristling through their shields.

But a being from beyond worlds cannot be measured by numbers alone. The monster twisted in a direction that had no name, vanished into a flash of light, and was gone. The panicked screams and shouts of the rear forces soon revealed its new location, as the beast burst through the ranks, turning a frontal assault into a panicked route, with inexplicably more horrors spewing from the ground beneath.

Of the few that survived that horrid encounter, fewer still will mention it even in passing, calling it only a being that could slip through space itself.

And yes, this will be a semi-regular thing. A fun little breather every so often to help me exercise my story-making skills.

So your going to be writing short stories about magic cards?

I like it.
Speculative Evolution Projects-

Other Relevant Work-

Final SE Lifelist standings

BREAKING NEWS
We interrupt your regular programming to bring you this cutting edge report.
ATTENDANCE DROPS DRASTICALLY ON SE SERVER
This past Monday on Discord, famous server Speculative Evolution took a hit in the attendance office when it's offline member list suddenly reappeared. Mods scrambled to rectify the situation, but unfortunately there was little anyone could do. Server member Ivan was asked what he thought of the situation. "So long as Flisch, lord of machines and scion of Urborg lives, all will be well". SE, (in)famous for it's eccentric userbase, has recently been spiraling downward, and now we have hard conformation of the decline. Moderator "High Lord" Icthyander states "There is nothing to be concerned about, Discord is merely changing its UI again", but members are beginning to suspect the honesty of their staff.
Stay tuned, we'll be back with more at 11.

Granted, if you know me from talks on the MtG thread, you'll know the most common stories I'll be making.

He was always a man of science. Or rather, was. Now he was Compleated, a servant for the Great Work. He had mostly spent his existence working as an underling under the various scientists and surgeons of Lumengrid, but that was to change. He had recently climbed the ranks and was seen in good favor to his superiors, who sent message to theirs in turn. He was soon given status as an assistant to the better members of the Work, and was overjoyed to be toiling with these outstanding professionals.

A piece of plating here, and a needle there, and the operation was a success. Another member of those filthy unCompleat had been brought into the fold, and he had helped his master do it. A glorious day it was. As he walked down the halls to the next work, he was stopped in his tracks by a large crowd of menials standing before a great doorway. Upon peering inside, he saw the great Praetor himself, Jin-Gitaxias. He was standing before the sub-Praetor Uulbrek, talking in a hushed voice that none could hear. After a while, the two turned to the group watching them, and and Jin-Gitaxias began stalking towards the crowd. Menials and finished experiments scrambled out of his way, until the Praetor stopped right in front of our up-and-coming surgeon assistant.
I have heard a great deal about you, about your tremendous help in the Great Work, so I have something to prove your worth. Follow.

He found himself in a grand operating station, with a gathering of higher-ranking scientists in a sort of spectators' stands for watching. At the center, he found himself looking at an elf strapped to the table, still struggling against the straps. This is Ezuri, a pivotal leader of the resistance. Now, he will be Compleated, by your hand. Looking around, our surgeon quickly found the tools, and grabbed the largest needle he could see.
Flicking the needle, he readied himself, as he began to give the first, and only, numbing dose.

The hedrons above were stirring. One by one, they unfurled with their ancient magic, producing ever stranger shapes. Below them, lay a small, unnamed village sitting amongst the decrepit ruins of enormous pyramidal structures -likely the tops of yet larger hedrons buried over time.

Most of the people there knew what this meant: the world they knew would be lost, forever reduced to a pile of dust that not even the most attuned of the elven nature-shamans could restore. The few ignorant ones were always the luckiest, since they had little to fear. One boy wasn't so lucky in this respect. About 14 years of age, he was on the cusp of manhood for his village, and was quickly losing innocence in many regards. Already did he know about the cycles of life and death, of those actions that both gave and toke life in turn, and of much more.
His next lesson was to be his last before the trials, to speak with a great elder. Javad was his name, and he had seen and done much in his life. The world had been seen, relics had been uncovered, but he had grown old; too old to go off into the unknown like the days of his youth.

"Come, and sit with me my boy. We have much to talk of before your trials."
"So what is it that I still gotta learn, elder? I've already learned all there is to know!"
"Not so child. You still have one more, supremely important thing to learn.
The hedrons. The great stones among which we live our lives. They are your final lesson."

"Yah, those old floating rocks. I already know about those: they can float, they're REALLY old, they can trap things easily, and Zendikar isn't to kind to 'em."
"They are more than that. They've been awoken, and now because of that we are in peril.
The whole world is threatened, and now we have little chance of saving it.
The hedrons indeed were used as traps, but now that trap has been broken, and its victims freed."

"What sort of 'victim' would need those old rocks for a trap?"
"Eldrazi. Things not of this world. They suck the very life from the land itself, leaving ruin in their wake.
The hedrons sense them, and they have helped in all that they can do."

rumble
"Then what can we do against monsters like those?"
rumble
"Fight. That's all we can do, even if it does pathetically little."
rumble
"Granted, these monsters aren't always a bad thing, if you have already lived a good life, one wholly fulfilled and without regrets."
rumble
"Have you, Javad?"
RUMBLE
"I do believe I have, child. Come now, outside, soon you shall see what I mean by my teachings."
RUMBLE
Outside, everyone in the village ran about in a panicked manner, like ants attending to a hole in the nest. The horizon held the answer: a giant... thing was making its way towards them, all other-wordly tentacles and skeletal parts. The sky itself seemed to distort around it, shining a bright light before disappearing into a thin black outline around the horrid being.
Hedrons all around began lighting up with a brilliant blue glow, before being drained of their light into the darkness surrounding the behemoth.
"So tell me boy, are you ready to face oblivion?"
"At this point, I don't think that's gonna matter. Death is death either way."
"I see you've taken this event lightly. Hopefully you'll understand what these things want."
"And what is that?"
"That when they are done, that in the end, all is dust."

Also, please note that this is now an open piece for anyone to post stories to; of course, there will be rules.
1. Said stories must be "short" stories based around one or more cards from the Magic: the Gathering franchise.
2. No cards that already have Uncharted Realms articles specifically for them, like the Gitrog Monster
