| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Before I start, I would like to introduce myself. I am Blakedog. I've always had an interest in Speculative biology, future evolution especially, and I always create new creatures that I think do or will exist. I hope to please you all with my ideas. Without further adieu, I present the Polycene. The Polycene Introduction Species come and go. It's an age old rule and process that has been around for the 3.8 billion years of the existence of life. Animals and plants either adapt or become extinct due to the environmental pressures around. It is survival of the fittest. Six mass extinctions have managed to wipe out 99% of all life on planet Earth, whether it be gamma rays, meteors, volcanic activity, etc. But the sixth mass extinction in particular was an interesting one. It was the first mass extinction to be cause by a complex species called Homo sapiens, also known as Humans. Humans originated in Africa and then spread out to colonize other continents, leaving their mark everywhere they went. Humans have had impacts on the environments around them. They destroyed habitats, threw ecosystems into peril, introduced non-native species into new continents, used fossil fuels which poisoned the atmosphere, bred beyond their carrying capacity, overhunted and overfished. Things were so bad that more than 75% of species went extinct in a few hundred years, which is no time in a geologic time scale. Due to the loss of biodiversity, humans themselves went extinct earlier on in the 6th mass extinction. The earth was inherited by the survivors. No terrestrial animal (with the exception of feral donkeys, camels, goats, pythons, deer, and pigs due to their extreme flexibility) above 100 pounds survived. This was the test of adaptability. For 10 million years the earth was plunged in an on and off cycle of ice age with the longest lasting 2 million years. After that, habitats and life begin to bounce back and diversify, marking the start of the Polycene (Many age), 49 million years after today. Chapters 1.) Geology/Shifting continents 2.) Survivors and Casualties 3.) Biomes/Habitats 4.) New species Edited by Blakedog, Sep 16 2016, 05:28 PM.

Speculative Evolution Projects- Other Relevant Work- Final SE Lifelist standings BREAKING NEWS We interrupt your regular programming to bring you this cutting edge report. ATTENDANCE DROPS DRASTICALLY ON SE SERVER This past Monday on Discord, famous server Speculative Evolution took a hit in the attendance office when it's offline member list suddenly reappeared. Mods scrambled to rectify the situation, but unfortunately there was little anyone could do. Server member Ivan was asked what he thought of the situation. "So long as Flisch, lord of machines and scion of Urborg lives, all will be well". SE, (in)famous for it's eccentric userbase, has recently been spiraling downward, and now we have hard conformation of the decline. Moderator "High Lord" Icthyander states "There is nothing to be concerned about, Discord is merely changing its UI again", but members are beginning to suspect the honesty of their staff. Stay tuned, we'll be back with more at 11. | |

Try an image hosting site like imgur. Upload the image there and copy the resulting url. That ought to work. |

The problem is that you only put the link of the site and not the image itself. the image only works if you use the address of the image. http://futureofnature.deviantart.com/art/Corticonyx-americanus-634900973 This is incorrect You can directly take out the address by clicking right directly on the image and go to the option "Copy Image Address" and put the link like this http://img02.deviantart.net/1dfe/i/2016/260/1/a/corticonyx_americanus_by_futureofnature-dai04q5.jpg |

Species:Corticonyx americanus Weight: 300-600 lbs Height:3-4 ft Length:6-7 ft Habitat: Deciduous and coniferous forest Gestation period: 211 days This omnivorous descendant of the raccoon is called an American Masked Oso (Corticonyx americanus). It is similar to the extinct American black bear in size, behavior, and ecology. They are semi-arboreal animals that spend half of their lives in the trees, eating the fruits, nuts, leaves, etc. Speaking of diets, they are a generalist species, feeding on berries, insects, invertebrates, small reptiles, and carrion. Occasionally, the American Masked Oso will hunt. Its' preferred method of killing is running down its' prey and using brute force to overpower it. In the ecosystems of future North America, this is an important species for seed dispersal across the forest, allowing more trees to grow. Edited by Blakedog, Sep 17 2016, 08:23 PM.

![]() Species: Pterodorous mammuthus rufus Weight: 1-1/2 lbs Height: 2-3 cm. Length: 5-7 in. Habitat: Boreal forests Descended from ground beetles, the Brown mammoth beetle (Pterodorous mammuthus rufus) is one of the largest beetles in the future. They live on the ground, using their mammoth like "tusks" to dig for food and to fight off rival males. Their style of fighting is locking tusks together, flipping their opponent over, and rolling the rival into submission. The one pictured is a male. Females have short and straight tusks. This species is monogamous, having one mate at a time. The brown mammoth beetle lives in Europe and preys on slugs, aphids, flies, earthworms, larvae of other insects, and even other beetles. But it also has many predators ranging from frogs to foxes. |

![]() 1. Quakumari (Glossonausa ornatus): Descendant of the South American Coati. It replaces the spectacled bears of today's south american highland rainforests. Like its' ancestors and its' predecessor, it is diurnal, being active during the day only. They are omnivores, eating leaves, fruit, nuts, insects, and small rodents. It has a very long tongue (similar to a sun bear) which gives it the name "Glossonausa ornatus", which means "Ornated tongue coati". 2. Arbrovenator (Dendrocyon venatus): Derived from the Grey fox of south america, Arbrovenator is adapted to arboreal life and hunts monkeys, birds, insects, and other tree dwelling animals. 3. Gamal (Dolichollis camelus): The descendant of the feral camels introduced to Australia in the Holocene. It looks across between a giraffe and a llama. It is the tallest terrestrial animal on earth in the future. It feeds on eucalyptus trees and and only leaves to either find more eucalyptus trees or find water. |

![]() Species: Thalasaurus atlanticus Weight: 4 tons Length: 23 feet (male) 21 feet (female) Habitat: Atlantic ocean Lifespan: 20-25 years Ancestor: Mangrove monitor (Varanus indicus) -Feeds on the young of whale-like seals, large fish, aquatic mink descendants, etc. - Behaves more like a shark than a reptile when giving birth. Females swim to shallow water, lays their eggs, and swim off, leaving their babies to fend for themselves upon hatching. - It takes a few weeks rather than months for eggs to hatch. This is an adaptation for the ocean lizard to thrive. - Being cold blooded means they have to live in warm waters. If caught in cold waters, their temperature drops, their muscles seize up, and they won't be able to move. - Young Thalasaurus are preyed upon by whale-like seal descendants. |
