| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Ok, here's one thingy. ^^ This is the larval form of one of my creatures. He's basically a dragonfly nymph on steroids. Edited by Spartan Delta, Oct 20 2008, 08:42 AM.

Thanks. ^^ I'll post as soon as I get more on here. This is the adult stage of the previous Insect X. It's based off of a cryptid called a "Rod", or a torpedo-shaped creature with more than 2 pairs of wings. Anyone here heard of 'em? |

I've heard of them. There are three possible explanations for them: 1. They are just a camera trick. 2. They are a cephalopod-like species of arthropod with "fins" lining their body to change direction and have methane jets near their anus. 3. They are an alien race (with the same description as mentioned above) that were transplanted on Earth either by accident or on purpose. I'm going to submit this to the Myths and Monsters competition so don't steal this!

Personally I think they are camera illusions. Some insects fly so fast they can seem like they have more than one set of wings on camera. |

Actually, Diptera is the only insect clade that has only one pair of wings, not the other way 'round. |

For some reason, I always count the halteres as a set of wings. My mistake. |

Sure, halteres are vestigial wings, but all other pterygote insects have 4 functioning wings. |
