| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Um, I should ask... ...Aside from "the Future is Wild", are there any other chances of the Phorusracids re-evolving? |

This is a thread about which species of birds are most likely to evolve into Terror Bird -like creatures (cursorial predatory avians with large hooked beaks and powerful legs) and I think penguins are unlikely to evolve into that ![]() Maybe it´s cause this thread is three years old, but why did no-one mention Ground Hornbills? |

So far the most likely candidates are: Bustards, Ground Hornbills, Caracaras, Secretary birds, Seriemas, Vultures, Herons, Storks, Owls, Cassowaries, Rails, Ravens with a few others thrown in such as coots, oystercatchers, kiwis, emus, rheas, cranes |

i dont think that hornbills or cassowary are likely to develop large carnivorous forms Sheatbills are quite likely however, they are already almost terrestrial, witout webbed feet and with relatively generalistic diet (for antarctic bird) |

No, southern ground hornbills definately do have potential to become large ground-based carnivores. They are pretty terrestrial, and they already feed on various big and small vertebrates and invertebrates, including preying on hare-sized mammals. And cassowaries are already fully terrestrial, aggressive and already have a substantial amount of animal matter on their diet. I think they could become avian equivalents of bears, dromornithid or gastornithid-like animals with both animals and plants on their diet. And yes, seathbills are good terror bird candidates. |

I have them becoming secretary bird-like in my project and later maybe a new line of flightless carnivores. |

I once thought of auk descendents that become terror bird like on some isolated archipelago. It is, of course, a rather stupid idea.

How come no-one mentioned roadrunners? They're practically mini-dromaeosaurs! |

Hmmm... I think that under the right conditions, penguins COULD evolve into terrestrial predators. Maybe evolving into some sort of ambush/brawler predator niche in a future Antarctica, I'm thinking something similar to Sheather's Bahmu. |
