Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I swapped around the pictures on my submissions, as I feel it works better for the descriptions.

I can see where you're coming from Flisch. However, what life-form do you suggest starting with instead of a microbe? Or, shall we start off like some of the evogames you see on 4chan where you start with 4 primitive life-forms(perhaps 2 photosynthetic organisms, a carnivore and a herbivore?). Sorry if that didn't make much sense.
Personally I wouldn't start with anything. Just say that in the primordial soup life has evolved since hundreds of millions of years but only recently did cells come together to form multicellular life and have the people make their first submission be the very first multicellular life of a lineage. Let's face it, multicellular life seldom bears resemblance to their single-celled ancestors. It's not like cells just grow bigger and bam, multicellularity.

Alternatively, you could have what Sagan kind of did at the beginning but for some reason abandoned that midway through: A hybrid system in which the first X generations are used exclusively to generate single-celled organisms, then have another X generations to evolve multicellular organisms from the bacteria and eukaryotes. After those generations have passed people can only evolve multicellular life. I'm still not entirely sold on this idea (I really think the first approach is more manageable) but it's a good enough compromise. But then again, these are just my opinions and considering that I won't be able to join in the foreseeable future due to life getting in the way, I'm not sure how much you should listen to me here. :P (I am however somewhat interested and would think about joining in the future. Again, it all depends on how crowded my schedule becomes in the future.)
We have a discord. If you want to join, simply message me, Icthyander or Sphenodon.

Sounds good. However, I'm not exactly sure as to what to do with the microscopic life-forms that mnidjm has already created.
Also, I understand what you mean about real-life getting in the way and hope you might be able to find time in the future. Best of wishes!

Okay, I've decided to create a poll for people who are wondering how the game should start. Here's an explanation of the different methods.

The Original method - We start with a single eukaryotic organism Protocytelia, which is then evolved into different species by the players.

Mnidjm's Method -

I would recommend saying that your starting organism is the first eukaryotic life, while saying that bacteria and viruses exist. Make each microbe submission be a global genus, and then put a block on anymore submissions of cellular life, so every submission after must be multicellular.
You as the admin can then use the viruses and bacteria to facilitate disasters.

Flisch's Method -

Thinking on it I would say to have generation 1 show the various single cell lineages that multicellular life would come from. On generation 2 people make the multicellular life from them. That way you could restrain the amount of lineages that could arise and keep it from getting too crazy.

Sounds like a good idea and could easily be done by making Protocytelia extinct upon generation 3. however, I think we may need more players before we reach that point.

Edited the rules. Hopefully, I ought to have the wiki done in around an hour or so.

You and me could keep dumping microbes until we reach multicellular

Ok. Hopefully, once I've got the wiki set up and we have proper multicellular life, other people might be interested in this.

Nope. Currently looking good. At the moment, I'm working on some photosynthetic organisms.

Ah mnidjm, your art just gets better and better! This project looks like a lot of fun, I like the wiki layout. I actually need to finish some submissions for Sagan 4 first (there I go by the username RyanKoopa, which was the username I used pretty much everywhere back in 2009), but after that I'll be sure to contribute to this project as well.
