Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Trait/event ideas for Civilization game

As you know from one of my earlier posts, I am planning to make a tribe/civilization game based on A tale of civilizations.
Two of the functions in the game that I thought were quite good ideas were the idea of a traits system for characters and an events system that he describes as follows:
Quote:

I do it like this: every month I roll 2 dices for each tribe. If the result is 11 or 12 a special event occurs. I then roll a dice to decide which category the event will be from, 1-2 being one category, 3-4 another etc. I then roll 2 dices, and for each number there is an event, though some events are on more than one roll since they are supposed to be more common. The "royal accused of blasphemy" however is only on one roll, and is one of the least common events.

However, as far as I know Huckbuck never said what traits or events he was using. That is why I am asking you for help in coming up with ideas for these.
Thanks in advance, and sorry if I posted this in the wrong board.

Don't you think that having a table for events- even one hundreds of entries long- will be too limiting? One of the strengths of forum-based games as opposed to video games and so on is that we can write creatively in response to anything. While having a bit of randomness to point you in a certain direction- a famine or a drought maybe- the details should always be flexible IMO.

As for traits, in previous forum games it hasn't been a problem for players to decide what they want their characters to be like, and do the development themselves as long as they don't decide their character is a hundred foot tall demigod that shoots lightning.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

You do have a point there actually. I think the main reason I thought the events system was a good idea was because it added a bit of randomness to it but as you said, it would probably be much better simply to let players think of what their people are like and for me to think of events based on their actions and my ideas, instead of limiting them to a certain amount.
Sorry if that didn't make very much sense.

It's no problem. The system reminds me of some of the mechanics from the video game Crusader Kings II, which is worth checking out if you like strategy games, enough so that I wonder if that's where he got his ideas from. It works very well in that context but I don't think it plays to the strengths of this medium.

The precursor to the game has begun. To play it head over and apply at Café Cosmique.
