| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! A gentle breeze swirls dust along the barren surface. On top of the cloudless red sky the Sun sends down its intense rays, mercilessly scorching the arid landscape. Time passes uneventfully. Later that day, as dusk begins, the sky turns blue, the first stars begin to pop up here and there, the Sun hides behind the horizon, the day gives way to the night. But this night is different, for there is a new candle on the night sky. Has a new distant star lit up? Or perhaps a rogue planet has entered the solar system? For the time being, nobody knows. Not only because there isn't anybody to know. But as days go on and turn into weeks and months, more and more new night lights appear... One day, all of a sudden, the answer fell from the sky. It was not one or two spacecrafts that landed, there were dozens of them. As they landed in almost perfect timing, their doors opened, their crew began coming out and looking around. 7th of July, 2092 - humanity has begun settling on its first new home. .... During the 60s a breakthrough in physics led to the birth of new technology, which ultimately, 15 years later, resulted in the first warp drive prototype. Much to the disappointment of the general public and to the expectations of specialists, it exploded on its first test launch. It was only about 10 years afterwards, after more intense research in physics and new technologies created specially for the purpose, that allowed for the first succesful test. Meanwhile an extremely large space telescope, built with the primary purpose of finding a new home for humanity, had become operational and found dozens of promising candidates. An international committee picked the one of them that was deemed most similar to Earth and intense efforts to colonise the new world, nicknamed Utopia, instantly began. It was only a few years later that satellites were in Utopia's orbit. As was the protocol, one of them was designed specifically to check for life on the planet, to prevent mutual biological hazard (MBH). Trace amounts of oxygen were confirmed, ever scarcier amounts of organic molecules were discovered, but otherwise no signs of life, with our biochemistry or alien one, were detected. Rovers sent to the surface only confirmed this data. As machines and robots began constructing the first settlement on Utopia, Newden city, something caught man's eye. A rover was sent to investigate what seemed from the distance an unusual rock. But as it approached the object of interest, its uncanny familiarity became ever so apparent... Spoiler: click to toggle A group of researches was formed on the next day to excavate the site and analyse the findings. Spoiler: click to toggle The news was communicated back and among the next round of settlers was a team of paleontologists and biologists to document the alien life that was and find out the reason it went extinct, as it could still pose danger to humanity's new home. Map of Newden city area ____________________________________________________________________ Okay, let's see how this goes. The rules are fairly simple: -You're part of the alien life research team (ALRT) and your goal is to find as much about the extinct alien life as possible, including why and when it went extinct. -You have to choose a name, with which to communicate with your colleagues and discuss the findings. This is to happen in this thread. Out-of-character (OOC) discussion is to be marked so. -Every week up to three new sites can be excavated and checked for fossils. Each site has to have at least two votes in favor and at least 50% votes for. The site is to be marked with a crosshair. -Every four weeks a new area of the planet can be added to the map of available for excavation sites. It has to have at least five votes in favor and at least 66% votes for. -Occasionally, as Newden city grows, some fossils will appear where the base of a new building would be. Those will be added to the collection. -During the rest of the time you are free to speculate away. -All knowledge you have from the real world is applicable here. Checking up new stuff specifically for this is fair game. -The only tools you have at disposal so far are chisels and pickaxes. As time goes on more will become available, such as radiometric dating. -And this is it! You may already pick a name and discuss the first finding. And don't forget to sign every your post with your name so the others can know how to address you. Updates for new excavation sites and new areas will happen on Sundays. In case I don't have the time to do so, I'll be sure to notificate you when else it's going to happen. |

(Hah, I had a somewhat similarlish idea for an RP myself (though different enough that I may try it in the future). I might join this. Do we need to sign up, or is this more like "suggest things in here" thing?) |

It takes place ITT, so it's the latter. Signing up happens automatically with the first post. But do choose a name for your scientist. |

(Okay, so do we have to also state our profession and if so, what professions are available? Presumably they don't bring literally everyone to colonize a new planet. Also, as a suggestion, what about having all IC text in bold? Personally I find that having OOC talk in parentheses is not enough, if you're basically skimming through the topic. Having a paragraph in bold text is more easily visible and quick to find if you just want to check what's happened real quick. Thoughts?) |

You don't have to state your profession, but you may do so if you wish. The idea is to allow people to use all their RL knowledge, which usually is not limited to one single domain. IC text being in bold is fine, I guess, but I don't know how pleasant to read it would be in the long run. I was thinking of prefacing or signing a post with one's IC name, maybe that bolded, would be marker for IC text. As for IG updates from my part, they will all be in italics for now. |
