| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Cycle of Life #1 A little idea I've been toying around with: a RP set in various prehistorical dig sites, like the Morrison Formation, Hell Creek, Ghost Ranch etc. This would kind of be like a user based version of the Walking With series, so you control the creatures that are there, instead of it just being a narrative. The first "Cycle of Life" as I've come to call it, will be set in the Dry Season of the Morrison. I plan on making this, if it is successful, to also include Cenozoic and Paleozoic formations. For references as to how your Dinosaur (If you want it to be) might look like, use these: 1: Dinosaurs 2: Other Paleobiota Rules: These are important, as they set a base as to what you can/ can't do: 1. Don't cheat: This means that you can't do anything that defies both the setting of the first chapter (Dry season of the Morrison) and the time this takes place (Say, no Tyrannosaurus in the Morrison. This is Morrison only creatures, might I remark. Don't make others specimens do actions the user wants them to do (Like for example, you're a Torvosaurus, and you kill someone else who is a Stegosaurus, this is not allowed, unless they give permission.) 2. Don't perform any possible harmful attacks on other specimens unless they are either NPCS (Non-Playables), and this would mean: Dippy looked around his environment, eyeing the Gargoyleosaurus that munced on plants nearby. Whilst you're describing the animals and the environment in the time and situation, they wouldn't be a players creature. 3. Try not to be mainstream: This means that you should try to avoid the most famous fauna of the Morrison. Whilst you can pick these, wouldn't it get a little boring after a while? Why not choose something unique, like Fruitafossor, or a Camptosaurus? But of course, you can be a Allosaurus or a Brachiosaurus if you really wish to. How to sign up: This is important. In order to join in, you have to do the following: Name: What is your specimen called? Species: Which does it belong to, is it a Torvosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Fruitafossor or neither? Biology/ Appearance: How does your specimen fit in? What is its length? Height? Gender? History: How does your specimen wind up? Is it a happy story or a sad story? Personality: Is your specimen passive or aggressive? Limits: What can't your specimen withstand? Here's a example (Note: Not complete or canon to part one. If this was going to be canon, this would be in the Solnofen chapter.): Name: Snapbeak. Species: Rhamphorhynchus. Biology/Appearance: Snapbeak resembles a Seagull in appearance. 1.81 meter wingspan, 1.21 meters long. Snapbeak is a male. History: Broken wing, exiled from nest, forced to fend for himself. Personality: Extremely aggressive. Limits: Can't fly as well as other Rhamphorhynchus. Prefers terrestrial habits. This one, however, is my character, and is canon to the first chapter: Name: Dippy. Species: Haplocanthosaurus. Biology/ Appearance: Dippy is patterned much like a Kudu, and is a male youngster around 2 years old and is about the size of a pony. History: Currently being formed. Personality: Dippy is a placid animal, although does get rather aggressive when threatened. Limits: Avoids open areas due to potential predators like Torvosaurus and Allosaurus. Controlling animals of the past? Mmh, sounds familiar. One question: Is there a "goal" for the RP, or for each individual player to achieve? It doesn't need to be an actual win condition, but without one it appears somewhat directionless to me. |

Well, it would be to survive a certain scenario given, like the Dry Season (which would last for around... 4-6 months?) as stated. Others can be made up if one wishes. |

This has the potential to be awesome. We should do the K-T mass extinction some time. |

So, as long as it lived in that place, during that time, can we play as anything in that category? A frog, say, or a lungfish or an insect? |

Yep! Doesn't have to be a non-avian Dinosaur, hence why there is the "Other Paleobiota" link I shared. |

Color me interested; I already have a dinosaur picked. Granted, I may have difficulty juggling two RPs and band; ah well. C'est la vie. Edited by Ivan_The_Inedible, Jul 11 2016, 10:42 PM.

Not to sure at the moment, but maybe I'll give optional players a chance to sign up within the next month or so? |

Toying with the idea of playing a lungfish. That could be potentially interesting given it's the dry season. Then again, they probably are just going to hibernate. ![]() Edit: Actually, I just checked wikipedia on its closest relative Neoceratodus forsteri.
So, seems like lungfish is still on the table.
