Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Hi there! I made this thread to post some short stories on, since I feel like it would boost my confidence when it comes to showing people my work (which isn't something I commonly do irl), and also I just like writing. so I will post short stories whenever I feel like it so this thread won't be very predictable. But whatever stories I do have I hope you enjoy.

Not trying to be rude, but you know, maybe it would be better to make this kind of thread once you have at least some content to post. It's not like you have to "reserve" the space on the forum.

Sorry, I do have content written down on paper, but I don't really like writing on my phone. But I will post one of my stories later today or tomorrow.
Again, sorry I made the thread without posting anything.

The After Land

The girl lay still on the forest floor, cold, and without a pulse. she awakes in the forest, not being able to remember her name, or how she died. "The girl is awake" said a smooth voice from the dark. "who's their?" the girl said. "It is up here" the voice said. the girl looked up, and saw a small creature, covered in black fur, and bared a single eye on its face. "does the girl know where she is?" said the creature. "no, I don't" said the girl. the girl looked at the trees, and saw the trunks were made of bone, and the canopy of brains. "does the girl remember her name?" the creature said. "no, I don't" the girl said. "who are you, what are you, and where am I?" said the girl. "It can answer all of your questions. I am It, a creature of death, and you are in the After land". the girl had a confused look on her face. "After land? what is that?". "After land is where you go when you die" said It. "wait, i'm dead?" the girl said. "the girl has died and has now come here to live until time stops" It said. "I can't be dead, not yet" the girl said. "this must be a dream, right?" the girl said in near panic. "It has heard those exact words before, many times" It said with amusement. While the girl was contemplating about this information, It had walked across the branch and plucked a red, bulbous fruit from the tree.

The girl looked up, and saw it bite into the fruit. as It sank its teeth into the fleshy bulb, puss began to leak from it, dripping down to the forest floor. The girl shivered in disgust. "are you dead?" the girl asked It. "In a way, It is dead, but then again, It was never alive in the first place" It said with a crooked, wide mouth toothy smile. "If i'm dead, what do I do now?" said the girl. "That is up to you" It said, glaring at the girl. "may I ask you if their is a way to leave?" the girl asked. the girl found herself being glared at in confusement by It. "Why would the girl want to leave?" asked It. "why would the girl want to stay?" replied the girl. "Here, you never go hungry, you never need to spend money, you don't feel pain, you don't feel cold, or hot. you feel no discomfort. why would you want to leave this place? It's pure happiness!" It stated. "This isn't happiness. How can you say that without ever being able to feel pain, or suffering" the girl argued. It sat on the branch, thinking about what the girl said. was she right? can one really only be happy if one has suffered. is the happiness, or is it just existing? It could not reply, for It had never had to think this hard about a question before. Why was It so bothered by this girl. was the girl right? It finally opened its mouth, and spoke. "Their is one way to leave" It said slowly. "What is it? Where is it? tell me please". the girls dead heart grew. "In the distance, through the Forest of Vertebrae, Across the plains of Limbo, and past the Ruined Town, is a mountain of light. on top of the mountain of light, is a train station. If we can get their, we can go back to the living world" the girl looked at It. "We?". "Yes, we. Your right, I don't know happiness, but if i can be alive, I can learn to suffer, and if I can do that, I can find happiness" It spoke with a tear of blood streaming down from its eye to its chin. "well, I guess I don't want to be alone on the journey" the girl said with a small smile on her face.

"We can make it in a short time. Things here don't need to sleep or eat, so their is no need to stop" it said. The girl started walking. the girl turned her head to look at It, to see if it was following her. It has inflated the tip of its tail like a balloon, and was floating close behind. "straight ahead, to the After Lands center" It said, glaring at the distant mountain. As they journeyed, they came across someone in the forest. The creature was a small fetus, surrounded by a placenta, and an umbilical cord was banging a stick on a drum. The fetus turned, and floated over to the two travelers. "Would you like to hear my new song?!" yelled the fetus in a high pitched childlike voice. before It and the girl could answer, the fetus started banging on the drum. "Excuse us, but could you stop that loud banging?" the girl said. "Why are you in a hurry?" the fetus said. "that is non of your business Embryo" It said "I'll stop on one condition" the fetus said. "If the girl rubs my head gently" the fetus said. "What?" the girl said in confusment. "I died in my mommies tummy, so I never knew what it was like to have her gently hold me and comfort me, so can you do it". the girl was mildly shocked by the fetus's story, and grew sad. she stuck her hand inside the thick placenta, and rubbed the fetus's large bulbous head in a circular motion.

the Fetus cooed in happiness and comfort. The fetus moved back and spoke. "Thank you lady". The girl did not know what to say other than "Um, your welcome". Although the fetus did not have a mouth, she could tell he was smiling. they proceeded to move to the forests edge, where the grass met the trees. they than began to move across the light green plains. The girl turned to It and said "what will happen if your alive? will you be born into a body, or move into someone else's body?". "I'm not quite sure, but we will have to find out". they kept walking across the wide expanse of the Limbo Plains, until they came across an old shack."who lives here?" the girl asked. "A dog. It doesn't like dogs very much" It said. the girl knocked on the door of the shack. after a moment the door creaked open. behind the door, was a scruffy, and sad looking dog. "hello" the girl said. "why have you come?" the dog said. "er" the girl hesitated to answer. "are you here to beat me? all the humans want to beat me. at least here I can't feel it" the dog said with his head down and his chewed up ears drooping. "no no no no! I'm not here to hurt you. I just came to say hi is all". The dog didn't look up. when the girl turned around to leave, something caught the dogs attention. "In your pocket. Is that for me?" the dog said. "Hm? Is what for you?" the girl asked. "The treat. Is it for me?" the dog asked. "what treat?" the girl reached into her pocket to check, but felt something inside. She pulled out her hand, and in it, was a bone shaped doggy biscuit. "I never had an owner. I lived alone in the ally ways. I fed myself, and fought over garbage. I never ate anything that other dogs ate, and all I wanted was a treat". The girl looked down at her hand, and thought for a second. She moved the hand in front of her, presenting the treat to the dog.

the dog smiled, and stuck his tongue out goofily. He trotted over to the girls hand and took the treat, and started chewing, savoring its taste. he was done within a few moments. "Thank you miss" the dog said. the dog sat down contently, and the girl patted his head. the duo walked off, and the girl waved at the dog. the dog barked a goodbye at them. Eventually the shack was out of site, and the girl asked It "how did I have that in my pocket?". "if you die with a possession or food, it comes here with you". the girl thought for a second did I used to have a dog. She turned to it and asked another question. "how come everyone knows how they died except for me? the fetus died in his moms stomach, the dog starved, but I don't know how I died". It looked off into the distance, and said "If you stay long enough then you start to remember your past life". The girl looked off at the mountain. the plains were coming to and end, and the grass met the brick. They walked into the ruined town, and it was silent. they looked at the crumpled buildings, and then the empty shops. they walked further down the dirt road, until they met a doll, sitting on a brick in the road. "Do you have a needle and thread?" the doll asked."No I don't think so" The girl said. My arm has torn so I cant fix it myself, but I have some in my backpack".

The girl walked over to the doll and looked in her backpack. She found a needle and some thread. She sat the doll down on the brick and stuck the needle in her arm. the doll was unphased by the needle. the girl steadily stitched the arm back on the doll. while the girl was sewing on the arm, the doll spoke. "You treat me nice, my kid didn't treat me nice". the girl glanced up and back down to the arm. "My kid played with me too ruff. she pulled my limbs, sheared off my hair, and played tug of war with me. Oh god I remember the pain. It hurt so badly. that's why I like it here, I can't feel bad like that again". The girl was moved by the dolls story, and was finishing the final stitches of her arm. "there you go, good as new" the girl declared. "thank you" the doll said. the doll got back on her feet, a trudged along, going inside the darkness of a decaying brick building. The girl and It moved closer toward the mountain of light, but the girl had another question. "I thought only plants and animals could die" the girl said. "everything in the living world dies, the rocks, the trees, the grass, the buildings, even the toys. everything comes here eventually". Finally they reached the mountain. The mountain illuminated the Land, and glowed brighter than the sun in the living world. "The train is up their?" The girl asked It. "Yes, indeed it is up their" It stated. With a deep breathe, the girl marched up the smooth slope of the mountain. it took longer than she thought to reach the top. They reached the mountains peak, and at its peak is a platform, with train tracks spreading out in two directions, seemingly suspended in the air. the train was at rest, but sitting in the way of the duo, was a little girl with black hair, covered in a red cloak, and holding a scythe. "they want to return to the world of the living do they not?" the child asked. "who are you?" the girl asked. "that's the conductor of the train, Death" It said. "If they want to return, you must pay" the child informed. "pay? pay with what?" the girl said. "with you body and mind" death said in an echoing childlike voice. "It, what does she mean?" the girl said.

"In order to return to the living, you must give up your former body, and your memories of your past life. then you will be reborn into a new body" It said solemnly. "Wait, I don't want to, I-" before she could finish her sentence, It stuck his tail into the girls back, and started to control her voice. "I. Agree. To Your. Payment" the girl said, in a deeper, more cryptic voice. "It also agrees to your payment" said It with a wide mouth smile. it released his grip on the girls spine and the girl fell to her knees. "why..." said the girl in a quiet voice. "its for your own good" It said. "THE DEAL IS DONE, PREPARE FOR DEPARTURE!" said death in a loud, echoing demonic voice. The girls body fell to the floor, and It walked onto the train, grabbing the girls soul like a balloon. "ONWARD, TO LIFE!" said Death. The train started to move. the train moved forward on the suspended tracks. It and the girl's soul did not speak, for the soul could not talk. the train moved upwards towards the sky. A bright light opened in the distance, and the train went through. just like that, the girl felt an extreme drama. she was being birthed. for a few moments, she could remember her past life, but she soon lost her grip on her memories. she was a new person now, a newborn baby. she had a new life now. but what of It. It didn't get reborn, because gods aren't born. It simply just took on a new form. He was a cat, a black cat. a cat, not very old, had just recently passed. It took advantage of this and took the cats body. It was finally alive, and It took comfort in the lesson the girl taught him, how one can't be happy, without suffering.

I really liked the story, it was a nice mix of sad, and interesting. My only problem is that whenever the characters talked it should have been like this:

"The girl is awake" said a smooth voice form the dark.

"Who's there?" the girl said.

Thanks! I am trying to become more of a story teller but I've never really written anything before that story. But I'm glad you enjoyed it. :")
