Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

To be fair, people do talk about gardening here a lot.

We interrupt your regular programming to bring you this cutting edge report.
ATTENDANCE DROPS DRASTICALLY ON SE SERVER
This past Monday on Discord, famous server Speculative Evolution took a hit in the attendance office when it's offline member list suddenly reappeared. Mods scrambled to rectify the situation, but unfortunately there was little anyone could do. Server member Ivan was asked what he thought of the situation. "So long as Flisch, lord of machines and scion of Urborg lives, all will be well". SE, (in)famous for it's eccentric userbase, has recently been spiraling downward, and now we have hard conformation of the decline. Moderator "High Lord" Icthyander states "There is nothing to be concerned about, Discord is merely changing its UI again", but members are beginning to suspect the honesty of their staff.
Stay tuned, we'll be back with more at 11.

I'm actually using this. Sorry my camera sucks, but what the hell is this? This orange fungus makes small sprouts all over the precious service berry. I just want to know what it is, really.

Himalayan Death Bloom. Afraid you're fucked, kiddo.
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

I finally found out what it's called. Briza maxima, quaking grass, or as a kid when we had it in our garden, trilobite grass.

Can't wait to get some in my new bed.

I like plants.

I have between 20 and 30 potted tropical plants at any given time plus outdoor garden beds and seasonal flowers.

My favorite is my lemon tree, which I started from seed sometime in middle school. It's about three feet tall, not counting its pot or stand, today. No fruit so far, but its leaves smell lovely.

Others I'm particularly attached to are this gangly Norfolk Island pine, which I've kept going for five years now.

And this varied lot of container plants, including two avocados grown from pits, a banana, poinsettias, spider plants, a seedling pine tree my brother gave to me for Earth day this spring, and an amaryllis that has been in the family for the better part of the last decade, but has never had a single flower. Until this summer, it never had more than two leaves at a time. I'm not sure why it never blooms, but it seems otherwise happy.

My garden is technically my grandmother's yard, but it has been many years since she has been able to work in it. A lot of the flowers were put in by her long ago, but until recently when I took over the maintenance, it had been very neglected.

Most of my container plants go outside for the summer, but I keep a few indoors, as they cannot handle the bright sun, including this bamboo plant that's been with me since the sixth grade.

And of course the many plants that grow in my aquariums.

You all have pretty gardens, so jelly. Even though I haven't seen Monster's, Richard's and Lamna's gardens... makes grabbing gestures at photos of their gardens

Eh, as a garden mines is not really worth showing, but I have some nice plants.
Three Sisters kind of became a B Movie about killer squashes.

My sunflower has bloomed.

Is that M. basjoo, lamna?
I'm hoping mine puts out some secondary sprouts soon.

My spare room is becoming a conservatory lately as I've gone on a big houseplant binge and potted up a few dozen cuttings/divisions and little seasonal clearance plants from Walmart. (this is about half - the ones that didn't fit on my side porch outdoors).

This is a little weed that grows everywhere in the yard in the summer. Finding a resemblance to certain houseplants I grow I finally discovered it's called the asiatic day flower, and it's related to some of the vines I grow in my aquarium. So I set a few plants that I ripped up from the flowerbeds in the water a few weeks ago, and it's rooted just as nicely as the traditional houseplant has and started to bloom.

The pothos vine in the small setup meanwhile threatens to wholly cover up the aquarium.

Musa sikkimensis, apparently it's the hardiest you can get. This weekend I'll split the pups out. Some I'll plant out in the soil, some I'll put in the greenhouse, some I'll keep as house plants to maximise my chances of keeping it alive.

Two species of wild mushrooms are growing in the outdoor mushroom bed I prepared the other week. Good sign I suppose...competition for my spawn though

My allotment looks awful right now - I've had a problem with slugs, perennial weeds, vandalism, blight and being at work to much this summer . So I've ripped most of it out, in preparation for all-over mulching and rebuilding the greenhouse. I've given up on plants this year in favour of building stuff and making compost. Hope to go fully no-dig this coming year.

...I love compost
