| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? NOTICE They came from the heavens above. We first called them "Saints", believing they came to rescue us from the world we destroyed ourselves. We were wrong, ever so wrong. They came to eradicate us, remove us so we could cause no more harm. Not only was our homeworld Earth destroyed, we were soon to be, too. But we could fight. Humans always do that, we're stubborn creatures. So we did. The First Seraph, Paradai, fell in Leeds, Great Britain. They weren't prepared, nor were any of us. The entire city was destroyed, as well as much of the (surviving) landscape. It took two full days of missile bombarding from the ships HMS Bridgewater and HMS Epreuve, both Atlantis-class guided missile cruisers, as well as countless ground troops and aircraft. The First Battle cost thousands of lives and the loss of Leeds. The battle was considered a loss due to the great number of deaths involved. This was the battle that decided Earth's plan; the SENTINEL Program. The First Seraph, Paradai Orgins The First Seraph, Paradai, was a huge monstrosity that fell in Leeds, Great Britain and sparked the international SENTINEL Program. Paradai was roughly humanoid with a thin body, long arms and legs. Appearing much like an ape, Paradai had one defining feature; the first Death Mask of any seen Seraph. The circular, white plate covered his face and, when broken by the first cruise missile launched from the HMS Bridgewater, unleashed a huge wrath of long, black tentacles destroying all in their path. This was the first time a Death Mask had been broken and it was quickly noted this was a mistake. Paradai was incredibly strong and could topple a building simply by lightly pushing it. Appearance Paradai was large, thin and ape-like with long arms and legs. He possessed a blank, circular Death Mask and, when broken, had unleashed a torrent of black tentacles that destroyed all in their path. He was incredibly violent and would go out of his way to destroy anything in his path. The First Battle The First Battle lasted about two and a half days and killed over 8,000 people. The two ships positioned off of Great Britain's shores, HMS Bridgewater and HMS Epreuve, both Atlantis-class guided missile cruisers, launched over 20 cruise missiles at Paradai, the last one striking him down as he knelt, weakened by an entire army of tanks and soldiers. One sailor aboard the HMS Epreuve wrote: "It was so ugly. The huge beast crushed everything in it's path, destroying the world around it. His black, dark skin and his white faceplate just didn't mix. It was worse when we broke it. Huge...things came out of it. I don't even have words for them. They were like an octopus' tentacles, but worse. They were long and round, having no suction pads, only coming to a sharp tip that appeared to almost be metal." There was no evidence of Paradai having metallic tips to his tentacles, but they did appear to be incredibly hardened. The Aftermath The First Seraph lead to the sparking of the defensive SENTINEL Program. The final cruise missile launched against him, from the HMS Epreuve, completely destroyed the Seraph's body and launched samples of Black Matter nearly everywhere. The Black Matter was collected and studied, eventually being used under the armor of SENTINELs to make them more agile due to it's gel-like properties. Paradai was not only the beginning of Judgement, but also the unofficial creator of the SENTINEL Program. Image

Parts of a Seraph Black Matter Seraphs all have one feature that is indispensable among their arsenal: Black Matter. The living stuff of the Seraph, Black Matter acts as a solid when on the Seraphs body but quickly becomes gel-like when fallen off. The material does not seem to rot under any conditions, and is used efficiently in the SENTINEL Program as an under armor, keeping the SENTINEL from moving slow due to it essentially being a gigantic human-controlled robot, and keeps the SENTINEL agile and mobile. Black Matter acts as the skin, vein, and organs of a Seraph. They send Vile through the veins of the Seraph to keep it moving and push it along, acting as a "heart". Vile A Seraphs lifeline, Vile is what keeps it alive under Earth's conditions. Vile acts as blood for the Seraph, sending nutrients through it's Black Matter. It appears to be incredibly toxic towards Earth life, and quickly sickens and kills whatever life it touches. This is why SENTINEL pilots are kept from fighting Seraphs in the ocean; if the blood gets in the water, a mass extinction will quickly take place. Death Masks Death Masks are a feature of some Seraphs that cover their "faces". Ranging from blank to Swiss-cheese like, the Death Mask is often covering a deadly feature of the Seraph, and SENTINEL pilots must keep from cracking them or risk losing the fight. As in The First Seraph, the Death Mask often covers tentacle-like structures or other long range attacks. However, in the case of The Third Seraph, the Death Mask may cover up nothing and be used as a distraction mechanism from their weakest point (which as in the case as the aforementioned Seraph, was the face). Cracking the Death Mask can risk a fight and, unless entirely sure it is covering a weak point (which is incredibly rare), pilots must assume not to destroy it and fight the Seraph in other ways. |

SEN-00: Prototype Orgins SEN-00, the first SENTINEL Prototype, was complete just before The Third Seraph's landing. It was launched near immediately after completion, with a pilot only used to simulations of the SENTINEL. The pilot, Elliot Rosario, was essentially untrained but highly suited for the job: he was incredibly physically fit as well as incredibly intelligent. He was often dubbed the "perfect candidate" by SENTINEL Program workers. SEN-00 was armed with the standard load out for future SENTINEL units: an incredibly durable Gigath-08 SEN-Rifle, a Gigath-09 SEN-Sidearm, and a Gigath-10 SEN-TacKnife. As well, he was equipped with 3 SEN-Rifle clips and 4 SEN-Sidearm clips. SEN-00 was a dark grey in color, with lime green photoreceptors and lights. He weighed in at over 5000 tons. Appearance SEN-00 was a standard model SENTINEL, and appeared like a human in advanced combat armor. His stabilizer wings were a little larger than production models and his secondary stabilizer wings were also a bit smaller. This caused a slight balance issue, and SEN-00 could be tipped easier than production model units, but he still stood up to his task and defeated many Seraphs before being destroyed by The Eighth Seraph. Battles SEN-00 was deployed to multiple locations over his lifespan. These were, in order: Denver (United States); Alice Springs (Australia); and New Boston (Antarctica). He fought in battles against The Third, Fourth, Sixth and Eighth Seraphs and killed all but the Eighth. Image

The Heavens Above: Update I Regarding "Likes" So far, two people have liked the updates to this thread I have posted. To them, I just want to say thank you! It really means a lot to me! I know this isn't true speculative biology but I find it just a fun time occupier as I study evolution (of course reading Darwin's The Origin of Species) and other biological sciences (god knows I already know enough about space). Really, thank you guys! Now, you may be wondering why I'm not worrying about actual replies to the topic right now; although I love answering questions about my work, I fully understand that no replies often means no questions/criticisms, which also means I am getting my point across, which, of course, makes me happy! I will not be abandoning this project anytime soon and, although work will slow down the more I prepare for my actual Habitable Zone project, I will still continue to work on this. Regarding "The Origins" The poll I have set up is, currently, leading with origins of the story. I now realize I really haven't produced much background to the story nor told what of much is going on. I will be working on this for the next few updates to try and keep clear the story of The Heavens Above. Thank you for replying to the poll! It really helps me out. I will be setting up another poll asking for what is next once I (and of course, you, the community) feel I have provided enough background to make The Heavens Above more understandable and relate-able. Artist Needed So, now that I have realized my drawing skills are absolute rubbish, I have decided we need some sort of "part-time artist". I can scan and send basic sketches over Skype. I am not asking for anything amazingly beautiful, but more diagram capability (as most of the images should be, in my opinion, blueprint-like). If you wish to fufill this role and have a lasting effect on this little project of mine, please contact me via email, PM or posting on this thread. However, keep in mind I do not check my email often, so it will be much more beneficial to PM or post on this thread. Again, thank you all for looking at this project. I really appreciate it and I will continue chugging along with it. One Seraph down, lots more to go! Sincerely, Hz |

The Discovery of the Prophet Father First Sightings The Prophet Father, the giant orb of Black Matter nearly the size of Ceres (880 km) was first seen entering Mars's orbit on January 18, 2068. The Prophet Father remained there for years, as if studying Earth. Astronomers believed Mars had captured another (very large) asteroid moon and named it Daniel, after the biblical prophet of God. Eventually, as Earth and Mars neared a transfer orbit, The Prophet Father launched forward, intercepting Earth within 8 months, reaching orbit on March 4, 2074. Judgement had come. From the equator, The Prophet Father (at this time still referred to as Daniel) could be seen as a huge black spot in the sky. The Thrashing The Prophet Father, after days of remaining in orbit, appeared to have grown six, golden, aurora like "Wings of Glory". At this point, astronomers were stunned and religious maniacs were going at it, discussing theories of it being the Devil, God, even the first sign of the Rapture. The public began to believe that the end was near, and that God had come to remove us from our slowly burning planet and whisk us to Heaven or a new world to populate on. They were wrong. The Prophet Father was no hand of God. The Prophet had began thrashing a week after entering Earth orbit. Violent, dark bursts of Dark Matter would fly off at random intervals, only to be recollected by Earth's newly acquired moon. Soon the First Seraph would fall in Leeds, Great Britain, at 6:58 pm Greenwich Mean Time ("The Time of Seraphs" (LINK COMING SOON)), on March 10, 2074. Birth of Paradai Paradai was created, exiting the body of Prophet Father, and entered a trajectory course towards Earth on March 9, 2074. He would fall in Leeds. The world rejoiced; an angel was coming to save them, or so they thought. After Paradai attacked, Earth was shaken. The battle lasted days and killed thousands. Judgement was upon Earth. |

The Days Before Judgement Global Warming Global warming has taken an effect on the globe. Many major cities, including London, Washington D.C, Sydney, etc. were submerged. Australia possesses a huge inland sea, called The Reservoir, as most of Earth's fish now come from this location (after being sent there for safety from sea pollution). The sea levels have raised by 218 feet and the average temperature is now 80o Fahrenheit. Much of Africa is so hot it is completely uninhabitable to human life. The Netherlands and most of Denmark have vanished from the face of Earth. To think this happened in less than one hundred years. Humans are desperately trying to save heat-sensitive wildlife to make up for their catastrophic mistake. Polar bears have all but gone extinct, and with Antarctica now habitable due to the great loss of it's ice sheets, most penguins are gone as well. Many cities have been "replaced" in Antarctica, and it has been considered international territory, free for anyone to mine and settle. These cities include New New York, New Boston, London II and New Sydney. Pollution With the human population nearing 11 billion, mankind has had to not only settle the underground cavern systems of Earth, but also increase production needs. This means more factories, thus contributing more to pollution. The oceans are very polluted due to coastline factories, as well have their smaller brethren, lakes and ponds. Nearly every body of water has been used for factorial production and parks have been mowed over for residential buildings. Humans have killed off over 1,700 species in the last 50 years, most being insects like the cicada. However, this heavily damages the environment and if it weren't for the human population continuously growing, many plants would have boomed. Colonization The Moon is being slowly colonized and terraformed by humans. Currently 8 million people live here, but by 2081 will be killed due to a Seraph attack and lack of SENTINEL units to defeat it. |

SEN-01, Test Unit Origins SEN-01 was built after the Third Seraph's attacks on Denver, United States. It's pilot, Aaron Hurd, was much like the first candidate, Elliot Rosario. After about 6 months of training, much less that the 2-year standard program, Hurd was sent straight into the fray; he was well trained enough to defeat The Eighth Seraph after SEN-00 and Rosario were destroyed by a blow to the battery. SEN-01 was armed with standard SENTINEL load out. Appearance SEN-01 was a test unit of the production models SEN-02 to SEN-12. After this, the SENTINEL-II program would commence, building SEN-13 to SEN-25, being able to move for up to 18 minutes and 12 seconds rather than the SENTINEL's 12 minutes and 48 seconds, among other changes. SEN-01 was a basic model and was not customized to suit the pilot over it's career. It was a dark orange color with lime green photoreceptors and trim. Battles SEN-01 fought the Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Eleventh and Twelfth Seraphs. He killed all opposing Seraphs and was decommissioned after taking a blow to the battery by The Twelfth Seraph, crippling it's ability to charge. Hurd went on to become pilot of the SENTINEL-II SEN-15. He was deployed to New Juno, United States; New Boston, Antarctica; Julliath, Russia; and Hertz, Canada. |

The Second Seraph, Eaven Origins The Second Seraph, Eaven, fell in Prague, Czechia (formally known as the Czech Republic, it changed it's name due to the many name-chopping situations that come with a longer name, such as "Kekia" or "Czenia"). He appeared much like The First Seraph, however, he possessed no Death Mask and had an open chest with structures much like Paradai's tentacles whipping out of it. He possessed no arms and relied on his may tentacles to do his bidding. However, his legs could propel him incredibly fast for his size and it was hard to get good hits on him. Eaven led to the first of two uses of a tactical nuclear weapon on a Seraph. Appearance The Second Seraph appeared much like The First, however possessing no arms (replaced with stump-like structures). He was about the size of Paradai as well. He had a cavity in his chest that contained a torrent of tentacles used to destroy anything in front of him in place of his arms. The Second Battle Eaven was attacked by the Czech Military Forces as soon as he entered the atmosphere, with 18 Aero L-159 ALCA-IIIs intercepting him. All but two were destroyed. It took only one day to evacuate the city before Eaven fell in Prague. With little tanks and little ability to destroy the Seraph, the Czech Military relied on using a small nuclear warhead, Zachrance 1, of 2 kilotons and detonate right within Eaven's head. The blast killed Eaven immediately but severely irradiated the small capitol, and killed about 600 of those who did not get out of range of the nuclear warhead or the radiation range. The Aftermath Eaven was destroyed quickly and easily, killing less than 200 people before the nuclear weapon Zachrance 1 landed on him directly, killing him upon detonation. His Black Matter was not able to be utilized due to it now being highly irradiated (however it was still collected and would be used in the future on the SENTINEL-ZERO prototype, SEN-26). It was not able to be noted by the human governments, however, that Seraphs react harshly to large doses of radiation after being created from Prophet Father (this is why they land on Earth within 1-2 days). |

Update II, 4/23/16 Only One Update I'm only posting one update today. I need to study for a test in school, as well as help my parents with moving. I apologize for any inconvenience. I will post a little more than I would normally tomorrow, Sunday, April 24. Future Plans for the Story So, once I finish fully updating the story (or near the end of it, this will take a while), I plan to create something else to keep the juices flowing and keep this little idea alive. These are, possibly: -Keep The Heavens Above Universe going in my future projects -Start an RP thread where roleplayers can control their own SENTINEL units and combat Seraphs in the Second Judgement period, 100 years after this story takes place -Write this into short stories and possibly publish them (of course giving forum members a discount somehow ^_^ ) -Eat Cheetos So, I hope we can continue doing this project for a while! Thanks again, Hz |
