Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Quite a cool idea, wrong forum though :P Moved to General Discussion.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

How the hell does that even work? How do they expect it to? The goddamn thing needs a brain.

I don't even really like this song that much but the title is pretty relatable sometimes, I guess.

But how does it work? What is it about?

It actually sounds pretty cool. It seems to be about questioning the boundary between the living and the synthetic.

Ok, so there appears to be a lot of confusion here about what it is and how it works, so here's a simple summary of what I've found so far:

First thing that needs to be understood is that it's fake. They used bits of chicken and frog legs to produce the models, alongside other building materials to construct fake skeletal systems, the 'brain', and other parts.

I'm not sure if it's for a movie or not- one source said it was part of a design student's project, so I'm not too certain on what it's for.

The 'product' itself is meant to work as a manipulable man-made organic robot; in other words, a wetware robot. The black box acts as the brain/battery, likely containing preprogrammed actions to steer and control the actions of OSCAR. Because all of the systems are connected to a single brain, it means that the system would be able to work regardless of the positioning of the structures- think of it like switching the order of components in a circuit: it works to a certain degree as long as essential components aren't put in the wrong place.

I imagine it would work by having a 'nerve chord' run through the body sections, which attach to one another with the peg-like structures.

The main things that I would be curious to know about (if it was real of course) would be the role of the heart and lungs. For example, OSCAR doesn't seem to have a respiratory orifice, nor does it appear to have a way of connecting the heart's 'blood' to the brain for it to power the brain. Does this mean the brain and body sections are powered independently?

Because it mentions OSCAR seeking an optimum temperature, I'm assuming this would insinuate that OSCAR would hypothetical undertake other biological reactions in future models.

I think you're putting too much thought into this. It's not an actually working thing, it just moves automatically. The lung's and heart's only function is to make the whole thing look organic.

I guess, but I do believe it's futile to think about how something works that is not even intended to be believable.

It's like asking how a chestnut manikin works. What is the purpose of the matchsticks? How does it move around without joints? It's just something made for fun that vaguely resembles a little man. And this OSCAR is just something someone made for <reason> that just vaguely resembles a hypothetical semi-organic modular robot. No thought at all had been put into the purpose of the heart, lung and liver. They're just there (and named) to make the whole thing look and sound more fake-real.

While not confirmed, it's implied that it's for a horror movie. A lot of comparisons to Frankenstien are made in the descriptions, there's the whole thing about it needing blood from it's creator (already something more appliable to necromancy* than to anything truly scientific) and the fact that in one of the videos they paused dramatically at saying that it can "feel".

*I love how pretty much everything in these forums has an easy, rational explanation in necromancy or flesh magic, yet everyone resists it.
