Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Posting art for constructive criticism, if you think it's bad or just don't like it; tell me how to improve (my reasoning for this is in the spoiler.)

Things I already know:
The robin's wing might have too many feathers
Robin's tail is a little oddly shaped
Cardinal is possibly too fluffy around the sides (the bit which overlaps the wing)
so anything else you could suggest would be great!

This is awesome! The perspective and lighting seem great to me. Oh dear, why would people say that?

How exactly do you make these? It looks like watercolor, but well... You never know, right?

Beautiful. They look stylized so I wouldn't worry about slight anatomical errors.

Why would they say that to you? That's a cruel, awful (and to be frank, juvenile) thing to do to a person. BTW, I think your birds are lovely (quite better than mine in any case).
PLEASE NOTE: If I come off as harsh or demanding whilst talking to you, please tell me. I apologize in advance.....

Thanks for the kind words

I draw digitally and I used a program called Paint Tool Sai, which has a lot of paint-like effects when drawing (e.g. some brushes pick up colour already on the canvas) and some paper effects that give texture
I've recently got a new computer (moved from windows to mac because my old laptop was super slow and crashed a lot) and need to find out how to put it onto my mac.

The carndinals beak is a bit odd and the robins head is also a bit... Stretchy. You sure that cardinal is a cardinal.... :glare: It may be a red Microraptor with a crest in disguise. I'm kidding with ya', but it is great other than the things you already know and the Microraptor(?)-ish cardinal. Show me your wing claws and sickle claw Mike'. Come on Mike, I know it's you. (Sorry if this sounds too ridiculous)

But in all seriousness it's nice. :) By the way do you draw/paint on traditional media? (Paper, canvas, etc...)

Come on Microraptor.

I love your artwork! I also use SAI haha. The detail that you have put on those birds is beautiful.
I do art sometimes.

Projects:
Amammalia: A strange place where mammals didn't make it and the land is, once again, dominated by archosaurs.

Oceanus: An endless sea dotted with islands, reefs, and black holes. Literally endless, literal black holes.

Steampunk FireFinch - pretty sure I based it off a cardinal, then again, google images may not be the best source, always sneaking in those raptors I've only seen one irl but that was after the painting. (they're not exactly found in the UK.)
I do also use traditional media, I tend to "overwork" watercolours, but I'm practicing. Most of my pencil drawings are dragons (I'm not exactly sure if I should be posting them on an evolution forum)
jasonguppy - thank you :)

There's no reason for you not to post dragons here (unless of course you don't want to).

Paint tool sai is not free (you can find it for free but...)
A free alternative is MediBangPaintPro (here) which is pretty similar, I'm still learning and stuff, but there's paint mixing, paint-y effects and free downloadable brushes, textures, also cloud storage.
Downsides: can lag at times, the display panels are a bit pixelated on my mac but the final image isn't, selection brushes aren't the best.
The webpage is in Japanese but chrome translated it for me.

Your art is really beautiful. I can't see much to critique. Are you planning any speculative evolution projects, because I'd love to see this amazing art applied to one!

Lovely work! I'm not entirely certain if the wing anatomy is right- specifically the front wing. It might be a lack of shading or an issue on my end. Did you use a reference picture? If so, could I see it so that I can better understand what's going on with that wing?
