Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I'm not sure if any of you guys are already aware of this guy, but he's really cool. He's basically building a world from the ground up, making a video for each stage along the way. So far, he hasn't got anything comprehensive done, but this is great for learning about the process. Obviously, these videos no substitute for proper research, but they do make a good primer for those who appreciate videos as a learning aid. Plus, he's pretty entertaining. :)

Holben introduced me to Artifexian a couple days ago. He's helping a lot with planet making, though I'd like to know the sources of some of his formulas, as I can't find them elsewhere on the Internet.

Ask in the comments. He does respond on some of them. There's also a subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/artifexian/ where you might get some answers.

Which formulas are you having trouble finding?

Mainly it was the ones on forming stars; other formulas seem to ask for a lot more than just the mass of the star to determine things like the habitable zone and luminosity.

Nifty. Are these just approximations?

I have no idea. I didn't research them, I pulled them from this video description. If you watch through his other video, I think he explains how he got to those values. He's framing everything by comparison to our solar system, rather than as absolutely objective values, I think so that he ends up with something that will actually be recognisable and interesting to a lot of viewers.

He cancels out a lot of the values to put things in terms of Earth or Solar units, which means you lose accuracy the further away from those you get :)
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Yes, it was these that I was referring to. Fortunately, the example mass he used in his video was the exact same mass I was using for my star, so I didn't need to think about it too much.

It would be nice if he did a video on atmosphere- such as how to calculate what gases are in the atmosphere, what the density of it is etc.
