| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Project Circe Link to story thread I guess it seems a tiny bit premature to open up a thread at this point, but I think it's a bit jarring to have the discussion breaking up the flow of the story itself. Also I don't like making OOC posts in the topic itself, because when someone sees a new post by me and then realizes it's "just" an OOC one and not a story post it's probably a bit disappointing. I intend the story to continue for a while. As you might have noticed, I have tried to update the story on a daily basis, excluding the weekends. I will probably do so for a while, especially at the beginning, because I realize setting up everything is a bit slow, but once we're in the middle of the action I might switch to updating every second day, as it's pretty time-consuming. We'll see. Another thing that will become important later on, when we enter the "episodic" routine of the story, you can use this thread to give suggestions, both for things you'd like to see and things of what you think could be cool to have shown. This story is partly influenced by the premise of "All your yesterdays", so if you have a neat idea of some speculative behaviour/nonfossilized anatomic feature of extinct animals, feel free to suggest that and/or discuss with others.
I usually don't want to reveal stuff like this outside the story, but I guess I can answer this. Nobody in the "present" knows whats going on with the user who is currently in the past. They can't see, hear or otherwise sense anything that the user experiences. There are some things they can read from the brain activity, but this will be adressed in the story at one point. In all honesty... There's a disclaimer at the top in big bold red letters. I'd think that should suffice.
Also this. It's interesting how everyone is worried about the sexual content but not the violence. I also want to add that this is a story about untamed nature. The reader is literally put into the persepctive of an animal. Nature is not all sunshine and rainbows. There's some really really nasty things going on. I will not censor anything in this story because that would go against the whole premise. But, I will also not exaggerate for the sake of shock value. The story will show nature how it is, nothing more nothing less. This includes its ups (I like to think the whale journey was one) as well as the downs (as which you could count the latest one). As an aside, I do not want to add a disclaimer over individual posts for two reasons: 1) I might have to add a disclaimer in which the "mature" content (I count violence under mature here) is a really minor part of the post, or possibly not as severe as in a later update, which again takes away the "warning" function, because at the second time people might think it's not going to be as bad, because it wasn't the first time. 2) The same reason as for why I made the OOC: I want this story to be an ongoing thing. You should be able to read the story from start to finish and what's more, the fact that the story is written in first person draws in the reader more than if it was from a "detached" third person view. Suddenly having an OOC text at the top that is even visually distinct is just distracting and pulls the reader out of the narrative completely. Maybe some people don't care (or think they don't) but I do, so I put the disclaimer at the very top and be done with it, not having to break up the story inbetween. I hope that clears things up. Please note that I am not annoyed or anything. In a way I can understand your concerns and I would love for as many people as possible to read it, otherwise I wouldn't share it on a publicly available forum, but I also don't want to make any comprimises creatively. If being able to produce a better / more engaging narrative comes at the cost of a few readers then I have to live with it. |

Still, I think that some people although into the story would be turned off with updates with sexual themes. Some sort of warning would probably be nice. |

It has been brought to my attention that the latest update contained a mistake. Since I want this story to be as believable as possible (considering the whole premise is about turning the life of the past into something believable), I had to rewrite the part about the pterosaur taking off. My bad for not doing enough research into that. Although I'll try my best, I'm not perfect, so expect more such mistakes to crop up in the future. Just tell me what's wrong, provide some sources and I'll revise the affected parts. Please note however, that absence of evidence does not necessarily mean evidence of absence. This story also heavily deals with speculation and some things that are by no means supported by the fossil record will show up. Just things that are directly proven wrong by the fossil record is something I want to avoid. Anyway, in case you are interested, here's a video of how (large) pterosaurs (most likely) took off: Cya next update.

I decided to make a compromise with the warning thing. I will not put a warning in the IC thread, but I will put one here. It should however be noted, that if there's no warning, it doesn't mean the following update is guaranteed to be safe. The disclaimer at the top is still in effect, even without a warning. Having all that said, the next update will contain sexual content. You have been warned. ;) |

Thanks, Flisch. This helps a lot, and means that I can continue to read Circe, now knowing which chapters to skip. Thanks! |

I just realized that I said thewill contain sexual content. Of course, it counts for the entire episode, so, if you can't stomach sexual content, it'll be safe to tune in again after the next palaeonotes update. Have fun. :) |

Credit where credit is due, today's update (the entire episode, infact) was inspired by Transapient's Stegaur Sex Speculation on DeviantArt. (Needless to say the link may be not safe for work.) |

This is your friendly but 100% not mandatory warning that: The next episode* will contain adult content and/or themes of violence. Have fun. *An episode is defined as the entire trip plus the palaeonotes at the end. After that it will be somewhat "safish" to read again, although the events from the trip might still get referenced afterwards by the characters without warning. |

Not that I have to explain myself, but there's no update today, because I have a tiny writer's block. (I know, I know, probably not the best of timing, considering the current plot, but I'd rather skip one or two days than force myself to write down an update of inferior quality.) Meanwhile, enjoy this video of how to pronounce Circe. I've been asked this quite a few times now by various people, so I thought I'd share. Have fun. :) |
