Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Paleos

You're probably thinking, oh hell, not another prehistoric park, cliche and a bad copy of Eden . . . well, I'm glad to tell you that this is nothing like that.

That is to say, it is a prehistoric park . . . but with a massive difference. Set in a dystopian-style future world, where genetic modification if rife, immense theme parks and zoos featuring prehistoric animals brought back to life are common. In fact, it is rare to see a zoo without a good Tyrannosaurs rex to draw the crowds.

But Paleos is non of them. In a world where making something unique is becoming more and more difficult, one woman has chosen to make an immense step forward. She chose to make a zoo with a difference: the prehistoric animals here are still the same species, but with a most notable difference . . .

These differences will become obvious as you enter the zoo. You are greeted by oviraptorids offering to sell you balloons, and a friendly protoceratops wearing a neckerchief emblazoned with Paleos's emblem, offers to show you around.

Paleos is inhabited by intelligent dinosaurs. Heavily modified in their genetics, they are the only ones of their kind in the world.

Prepare yourself to enter Paleos.

Look, I know this is pretty crazy . . . but it is not meant to be entirely serious. It is partly inspired by Myxini's Lobster Pot, Dinotopia, and Eden.

I don't mind suggestions for creatures, etc.

Characters:

Lucy Elsworth: the creater of Paleos, an inspirational woman. Her body is now dead, but her consciousness lives on in the form of an albino Spinosaurus. Although jealous and sometimes dangerous, she is generally compassionate. Before the human Lucy Elsworth died, she moved her consciousness, memory, and thoughts into the brain of the dinosaur, completely replacing its entire life - a perhaps unkind thing to do, but in her fear of death, she wished for some way to live on. However, after attempted assassination by one of her scientists, who was jealous of her fame, she went mad with anger, and is now said to roam the remote corners of Paleos, consumed by madness.

Jak: not all is at seems at Paleos. In the immense park, it is split into sections, each kept under control by a scientist assigned to each sector. However, jealousy can sometimes spark, leading to dangerous deeds . . .
One of these scientists has an assassin, a dangerous Dromaeosaurus called Jak. He is small enough to sneak into buildings, but his claws are deadly enough to kill his victims. He is well-known and feared throughout Paleos.

Quatz Xzahl: a Carnotaurus roaming the tropical rainforest sections. He lives in a ruined temple, worshipped by human priests, who addorn him with feathery head-dresses and necklaces of shrunken human heads and dinosaur skulls. He has become grossly fat, and never leaves the safety of the temple, feeding on the numerous living sacrifices his worshippers provide.

Ceros: a wizened old Aquilops male. He lives in a lone hut by himself, making potions from Cycadeoidea seeds to make him hallucinate and contact what he calls the 'spirits' (a group of wise azdarchids in another universe, who whisper prophecies to him), and uses his Archaeopteryx femurs to tell people's fortunes. Is he crazy or wise? Your choice.

The Protobirds: a flock of Microraptors which soar down and whisper directions around the park. The rogue ones, however, will most likely lead you to the lair of a grumpy therizinosaurid. Just goes to show that the saying, 'never trust a strange dinosaur' is very true.

Nema Khaahn: a flamboyant female Nomingia who flounces through the park, sporting colourful feathers, some of which she has died herself, with her collection of early avians and small dinosaurs.

Daubia: this Scansoriopterix is a skilled pickpocket, designed by one of the scientists to get him some more cash. She often poses as a cute, friendly dinosaur for photo opportunities to visitors, but as the photograph flashes away, she is stealing wallets, purses, and other valuables.

Cetos: this ancient creature is an old, mighty Shonisaurus, once well known as the wisest creature in the park. Now he is simply taunted by teenage plesiosaurs, and he now some breathing problems after an ammonite become lodged in its throat. The shelled animal now jeers at him as he tries to go about his daily business. He is seriously considering throwing himself up upon the beach and letting the pterosaurs pick him to bits.
