| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Hey guys! It's my first time that I'm on the speculative evolution forum and I wanted to start a new thread! I am now starting a series called "Future earth"... well of course there are more things like what I am doing right now but I wanted to start my own one. If I accidentally copied someone else I apologies. I will indeed stage this series much like in TFIW (The Future Is Wild): 10myl, 50myl, 100myl, 150myl, 200myl and finally So are you ready to see how the world would evolve in my opinion? Good, then what are we waiting for? Let's start! Future Earth: 10 million years later Overhall: The continental plates are in constant move so I'm first gonna talk about the continents: Africa obviously rams into Europe, closing the Mediterranean sea. This sea starts to dry into a salt plain as the Atlas mountains continue to rise: they spread into Spain and "fuse" with the Pyrenees. The Bering sea shrinks to a strait making America and Siberia extremely close together but not attached. Australia moves north and causes the formation of "Burmia": a sub-continent formed by the Celebes, Borneo and the Philippines. Eastern Africa splits from the rest of Africa and is on it's way to India (I'll call this sub-continent Galeon). Arabia hits Iran, widening the Red Sea and expanding the Iranian Plateau. South America splits from North America, connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean while Antarctica moves north to South America. A fault line is created in the northern part of Europe splitting Scandinavia from Russia. Great Britain moves north and closer to Scandinavia. Ocean currents change and delivers temperate and warm water all around the world. The world is still warming but sea level is almost intact (the area which was once known as Senegal is flooded and southern part of Mexico is underwater). Sumatra collides with Indochina while Java moves north to Burmia. Papua rejoins Australia creating Papaustralia. Anatolia and The Balkans collide, closing the Black Sea. Greenland starts to move south as well as Iceland. Animals don't change that much but some have evolved some special abilities: -Due to the Sahara transforming into a Rain Forest, O2 level increases ans so does the insects and arachnids. -Cockroaches are able to fly while wasps evolve more ant like behaviors. -Iguanas become more aquatic which can lead to the recreation of the Plesiosaurs but from a different species. - -Birds diversify. -Jellyfishes become bigger especially those from the Physaliidae family. This period marks the beginning of the Noagene. I hope you liked it. Again I'm new here so please don't flame. Thanks for taking a look at this! Next I'll talk about some animals of some specific areas of the Noagene. Spoiler: click to toggle

Here is the geologic timescale of this part of the series: Noagene: 3 to 20myl Akupantagene: 20 to 45myl Lemozoit: 45 to 55myl The reason I put the Lemozoit in red is... well... spoilers... that will be revealed bellow: Spoiler: click to toggle

In order for me to talk about the next things in the update, we will travel to Burmia. Burmia is a continent formed around 6myl by the "collision" of the Celebes, Borneo and the Philippines. Papua has fused with Australia and Sumatra is attached to Malaysia and the rest of Asia (which is now Eurasiafrica). This new sub-continent is quite big and has a unique set of fauna, not terrestrial ones but rather aquatic ones. Local Sharks and Siphonophores are the primary ones who we will focus on. For now here's an image of Burmia and its surroundings.![]() Edited by Victorbrine, Jan 28 2016, 11:33 PM.

20 million years later We are now at the end of the Noagene. 3 new sub-continents form: Scandinavia (which separates from the rest of Eurasia 10myl), Galeon (eastern Africa) and Burmia. Burmia is home to a vast rainforest and in the middle a plainy land. 2 gigantic lakes are at the middle of Burmia (they where once the Celebes Sea and the Sulu Sea). Some aquatic fauna are trapped in these lakes, they are fishes, sharks, siphonophores, jellyfish and crabs and other. For the flora there are algaes. The 2 gigantic lakes rely on groundwaters however they're still "drying up", especially the ex Sulu Sea or Sulu lake in this case. In the Sulu lake, water dries much faster than in the Celebes lake, Sharks are quite interesting in these lakes that are at least half the size of the Black Sea. Have you ever heard of flying fishes? They have "wings" in which they rely on to glide (in a considerable distance for almost 50 seconds) before coming back into the water. This is used to evade predators. But wait, in these lakes, 20 million years from now, sharks start to take the air. Their pectoral fins are longer and wider (much like flying fishes, but different in some ways). Of course small sharks evolve this ability. Sharks can now chase flying fishes which themself evolved a much longer "wing" and fly for at least 60 seconds. These Gliding Sharks is just one small step for a shark, a giant leap for the entire species. A first step to take off to the skies. |

So besides the first stage, exactly like TFIW.
I see this everywhere in this project, but why do you just strikethrough things rather than delete them? It looks far more professional.
How does that happen?
Even in a world "dominated" by vertebrates?
They already do that.
Ants are pretty much flightless wasps (excluding the castes that do have wings). Behaviorally, they're nearly the same. Also there's already a group of ant-like wasps, called velvet ants.
How vague.
Why?
So you're trying to show their increased diversity, by showing very little diversity and species only a bit different than their ancestors?
Unrelated, but you don't even know about Sam? Do you even know who made him?
I don't think you understand how desertification and the changes that anthropogenic climate change is bringing. No, the rainforests will not overtake the Sahara desert, but instead the desert is just going to expand.
Why and how, especially with all the introduced species?
Excuse me, but how would that happen? Especially in such a dry climate like a salt plain?
How would an insect the size of a computer, that's bulky like a cockroach, fly for a long period of time? It's not like the wings of cockroaches are adapted to carry something that big at that size.
Why?
So flippers?
What object? It's not the early solar system where there's objects everywhere, things have calmed down during the past 4 or so billion years. However I do appreciate that you are trying to explain of what happened to the solar system at the time, even if the details are rather iffy.
Can you stop doing these, they're annoying and the jokes are not funny.
How did the get stuck inside?
That is absolutely ridiculous.
Yeah, but these pectoral fins are huge. So huge that they're impractical underwater. That's also not to mention the pelvic fins moving near the end of the tail, which also seems silly.
That doesn't look like a small species of shark, using the flying fish as a comparison. It looks derived from, and just a smaller form of a reef shark, so don't seem like good ancestors for a glider: especially in only 20 million years. One of the reasons is the stiff pectoral fins, which would limit them from gliding very well (at the very best).
Why would they specialize just to get flying fish? What advantages does it bring them, compared to sharks that can eat a variety of other fish with relative ease?
And no, neither flying fish or these ridiculous flying sharks would evolve flight. They completely lack the adaptations to evolve powered flight. |

That's some activity! And I only knew Sam a day after I posted this for the first time! ![]() Oh wow, it seems that 3 nuclear bombs has been dropped here... The reason I only put 3 birds to show some of them in the GIGANTIC DIVERSITY OF BIRDS (also I'm not a bird person but that's not the main theme here). Also many deserts in the world seem to be aligned in a way, near the 30 degrees lattitude, so the Sahara becoming a rainforest is due to ocean current changes and geological changes (the Mediterranean sea dries up and some mountains form between Spain and Africa). Instead Europe becomes the new "Sahara". I can't answer or reply to everything you have H bombed here but here are hopefully some answers/replies that might make you "happy" or anything. And?
I don't think it works like that. The prevailing winds push the clouds down into the Sahara, if a mountain chain forms in the Mediterranean region (between Europe and Africa) it would just keep that place a desert (if not, spread southwards) due to it being in the mountain's rain shadow. Europe would be much more lush, for the same reason. Spoiler: click to toggle

Indeed, mountains create rainshadows due to the orographic effect (which is much more important with mountains, cliffs also create this effect but it is very very poor) and would keep humidity on the other side but there is still a desert: the MSP (a salty desert actually). Europe experiences an extremely temperate period from the closure of the strait of Gibraltar up to 10myl. The continents "tilt" making Europe closer to the Tropic of the Cancer (and America closer to the poles). The direction of the sun's light would be almost vertical in Europe (which was once more diagonal like and stuff), meaning that land heats even more, but forests are still present. Eventually the southern half of the Sahara is now rainforest (the northern part is still semi-arid and the northenmost part and the area behind the Atlas are arid). Continue through time and then the desertification process starts. Well first of all, the humans have left one trace that would disapear in a matter of thousands or even millions of years: global warming. Earth's temperature increases. Europe's southern part loses its forests. Deserts push north. However the process is slow and Europe would become the 2nd Sahara by 45myl (with the exception of the Baltic States and Scandinavia). This is also an age known as the "Hot Age", which began when the humans first used the power of steam. The peak of the Hot Age is roughly 15myl and the end of it would be 102myl (gradual temperature decrease and rises and decrease and... you know). If any H-bomb are expected, they can be dropped but I will be in my bunker! But no wars (of course...). And I assume others would be in their bunkers too. But seriously, this might calm things down, climate can be a little difficult so... yeah. But wait... Mediterranean Europe is "desertifing": http://www.ewp.eu/activities/desiras/desertification-in-europe/ But that isn't really the same thing as here but... just saying. |

Based on what projection of continental movements in 10(?) years? This is not like 300 million years, we do have projections for that far in the future.
How?
You do realize that the effect of anthropogenic climate change probably directly won't last that long. After a period of time, the ice ages will continue. There won't be a "hot age" that's directly from humans, and it certainly wouldn't last 102 million years.
Yes, desertification is effecting Europe like it is a lot of places. The Sahara is spreading to Europe, that's a common fact. However, like you said, it's not the same thing that you described. |
