| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! I missed school today and a friend just informed me that for our English we were assigned to write a religious sermon. I understand that we are studying Purtian literature and I understand that they're abstract thought influenced American literature greatly, but I'm not religious. I'm not sure how to respond to this. Because I missed today, I'm going to ask what I missed and see if it was just a misunderstaning (as it was apparently assigned as the class was leaving). If he says that is the case, I will tell him I am an Atheist and refuse to write a religious sermon. Because our current Enlish teacher is on maternity leave (she will be gone til October), we have a professor of literature from Wichita State University teaching us. He's pretty cool and seems like he'll understand, but I don't know what to do if I don't get my intended response (I'm expecting an "ok" and a different assignment, but he might say "try anyways"). I don't really want to lose points or anything for not doing an assignment, but I'm afraid this may lead to a lawsuit against the school. And I really don't want to be that Atheist that gets raped by the Bible Belt courthouses (they practically think being non-Christian is a crime). I don't want to have to take any kind of legal action against the school, but I will if I percieve my constitutional rights to be violated. Any advice? Just to note, I'm almost cetain he'll just give me something different to do, but I'll let you know tomorrow. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

And I thought saying bad things about the bible belt was bad... I think your first action to do is to research on religious sermons. Certainly the internet has one or two you can take as an example. If that isn't enough to save your pelt, then be prepared for a fight or even a war. Edited by Carlos, Aug 28 2008, 04:12 PM.

I'm afraid I would lose a legal battle/war. First of all; 1. I'm poor 2. I'm an Atheist (that shouldn't matter) 3. I dislike America 4. I'm only 16 (sadly that shouldn't matter either) |

If you are 16 then they might hopefully see you as a kid and spare your life |

We were supposed to memorize some famous prayer in my lit. class 8th grade and I simply didn't do it. I did get a 0 for it, but I don't care; religion and public school don't belong together. |

Like johnfaa said, do a little research, and if that fails, tell him you're an athiest, and you can't say anything meaningful. Failing that, do something about the Flying Spaghetti Monster. |

I don't agree with you that Parasky should reveal himself as an atheist very soonly; I think he first should make up a very believable lie and only admit he's atheist if everything else fails. I'm an expert at building webs of lies and manipulating emotions, so I guess some advice from me could help |

I tell everyone I'm an atheist and I don't give a fuck what they think. Even though I'm technically not atheist, still, one should stand for his beliefs. |

Yes, but if the authorities are involved then the subject might become dangerous. Besides, some of his classmates might become jealous if he gets fine without doing the sermon, and an endless amount of hostilities might become hard to endure |

Authorities? They can't do anything; it's called freedom of religion and separation of church and state. |

I'm not going to lie. I'll tell him I'm an Atheist straight forward and if that isn't acceptable then too bad. I am who I am and I won't change just to conform to the rules of the society I live in. I obey the laws that the government gives me, not the laws of a 2000 year old book, the laws of which are based on rules as old as dirt. |

I'm impressed by your honesty and courage. I would like to see some more people impressed. Hopefuly that will be able to soften the hearts of anyone who discriminates atheists |

Atheists in America are relatively lucky; those in Iran are given no rights and are even not protected from being stoned to death, etc.

In Iran everything thats not according to Islam is killed; that means atheists, christians, hindus, gays, lesbians, dogs (in Islam dogs are seen as impure animals), cats, Indus river dolphins, etc. |

Actually Jews and Christians are allowed faiths in Iran, since Muhammad considered both as 'people of the Book' (I actually don't remember the exact terminology). |
