Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

So...for this week, starting Monday, I had to babysit. Or, puppysit-for Baxter, my mom's 6 month old Yorkie. Here's a picture of him:

And being with the little guy is a blast. He's super sweet, very loving and-to top it all off-hyper and loves fun (which mainly involves nipping my fingers-he does this as I type; very tricky to type with one hand). So it got me thinking...

Who here wants to talk about any adorable moments they had with their dogs? It doesn't matter if they're puppies or grown up, just as long as they were cute and memorable moments. :D

My dog Toby (About 1 year old now) loves being chased, and he's figured out that stealing clothing gets a rise out of my family. He's gotten it down to such a science that he only takes pieces of clothing that will get the biggest possible reaction and learned to make sure that his theft gets noticed: he'll steal a bra or set of underwear, bring it to you, and drop the clothing at your feet, giving you this look as if to say, "So, I stole this." And the second you move a muscle towards that article of clothing, he snatches it and runs like the dickens.

I'm watching my cousins' two dogs this afternoon, Cody is a year-old silver Labrador retriever and Marley is an English golden retriever pup.

My mother's mixed breed dog, Harvey, visited for Christmas, and he had been dressed against his will by her as Santa Claus. His disdain was palpable.

They're all really good dogs with good temperaments, but the retrievers are a lot smarter than little Harvey blockhead.

Maybe it's the picture, but that's a funny looking Lab. I thought he was a Weimaraner for a second. Is he a cross of some sort?

The dog I spend most time with these days is my friend's parents dog. She's recently moved out but we still take her on long walks. To be honest, Lexi (she's a Weimaraner) is a bit of a little shit. I dunno if she wasn't trained right or if it's because she's from a line of hunting dogs rather than family pets, but she's kind of cold and mean. She gets very excited when I come round, and a tad bitey. Other than that she's pretty aloof with people and other dogs, she doesn't quite get fetch.

But a dog's a dog, and at least she's pretty. She'll only get really clingy on long car trips when she crawls into my lap.

I guess a kind of cute moment happened last week. We were walking by a canal, and there were woodchips floating on the surface, must have looked fairly solid because she ended up in the water and I got pretty wet dragging her out.

Nope, that's most likely a pure silver lab. I have one of my own silver labs, and she's a purebred labrador. They may look similar, but silver labs and Weimaraners are separate kinds of dog.
Projects and concepts that I have stewing around
Extended Pleistocene- An alternate future where man died out, and the megafauna would continue to thrive (may or may not include a bit about certain future sapients)
Inverted World- An alternate timeline where an asteroid hit during the Barremian, causing an extinction event before the Maastrichtian. Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and notosuchians make it to the present, along with a host of other animals.
Badania- Alien planet that has life at a devonian stage of development, except it exists in the present day.
Ido- Alien world where hoppers (derived flightless ballonts) and mouthpart-legged beasts are prevalent.
Leto- Life on a moon orbiting a gas giant with an erratic orbit; experiences extremes of hot and cold.
The Park- ???
Deeper Impact- a world where the K-Pg extinction wipes out crocodilians, mammals, and birds; squamates, choristoderes, and turtles inherit the earth.
World of Equal Opportunity- alternate history where denisovans come across Beringia and interact with native fauna. Much of the Pleistocene fauna survives, and the modern humans that end up crossing into North America do not overhunt the existing animals. 10,000 years later, civilizations exist that are on par with European and Asian societies.
The Ditch- Nothing is what if seems..

He's registered as a chocolate lab with the AKC (silver in his case being a dilute chocolate factor, genetically) but I also thought he looked very Weimaraner in the face, too.

The silver color probably comes from a distant crossing with the Weimaraner, there's some controversy among the big breeders and kennel clubs about the coat morph and its purity in general, but I don't really agree with all of the breeding practices of the big kennel clubs anyway, he's definitely a nice dog, appearance-wise and in temperament.
