Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

1 Million years AD; The strange unfamiliar world of the not so distant future

Most future evolution projects take place in the more distant future, over 5 million years away. But life can evolve and change over much shorter timescales. This especially applies after extinction events. Only a few hundred thousand years after the K-Pg extinction, Palaeocene mammals had already become larger than any known Mesozoic mammal.

Today, a similar, though as yet less severe extinction event is taking place. Already most of the megafauna that existed for the past several million years have gone extinct, leaving niches open. The only things keeping them open are human activities and time. But history and common sense tell us that at some point in the next thousand years our planetary civilisation will probably collapse, largely eliminating the main factor stopping life carrying on.

Fast forward 1 million years, and the 'wild' is again the normal state of the earth. The oceans have risen some 80 metres due to human induced climate change, for the same reason most of the worlds ice is gone too. Several super volcanoes have erupted, and the last remnants of the modern 'concrete jungle' have crumbled. Humans are rare, and are considerably different to 21st century people. They are no longer a significant force effecting the earth.

Some groups of animals are identical to those we are familiar with, some are similar but obviously different, and a few are unlike anything found in the modern era. This is the world in 1 million years AD.

This is going more like a discussion than a project (I know that usually there are discussions in the projects, but this is almost everything discussion).
It's only a discussion because everything I've created has been so 'controversial' and everyone wants to know why and stuff. I'm not blindly making up things that sound interesting, I've actually thought a lot about everything here, I'm just not good at summarising my thoughts into a comment.

Also I've seen people make projects where tigers form populations in random areas because a few managed to escape from zoos and somehow find each other. And incredibly there was actually no objection to it................. I don't even know...
What does that have to do with anything?

As for it being controversial, Hybrid basically does this to every project.

It was to show how people can get away with stuff that's way more unlikely than anything I've done here so far. But it is off topic so yeah.

As for hybrid, I find it somewhat ironic that he was the one first pointing out most of the things I've done 'wrong' here so far...

"Levid" sounds a bit like "Livid" which seems fitting enough.

El Dorito, what would be the main marine mammals of this world? Would seals become fully aquatic?

I suppose seals probably would become fully aquatic, but that wouldn't happen until probably at least 10 million years into the future, and that's assuming toothed whales would decrease, which isn't really happening. Whales still exist here too, so do pretty much all a animal groups today, including humans ( they aren't Homo Sapiens though ).

2016 first yay

Tfw nobody seriously understands the gravity of an anthropogenic extinction.
"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!"

Well it's 2016 in Australia so that's why I said it, but yes I understand that it technically isn't 2016 everywhere at the same time.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that NO-ONE understands what is going on, but I hope I'm not the only one with at least some understanding.

I've been thinking that after I've done some more for the 1 million years AD part, that I will go to a more distant future where some more evolution could have happened. I know it might be a little ironic, but I'm starting to run out of ideas already. If anyone has any ideas for other continents I'm open for suggestions (just don't spam the post or something).

Basically:

10 MyF
20 MyF
50 MyF (I doubt the project will get this far but whatever)

Well I don't think there would a lot of new continents by 50 million ACE, in fact the world wouldn't look too bizarre by this time. Even 65 million years ago when the dinosaurs died out, the world was reconginsable. I think the most major changes would be the seperation of smaller landmasses (Baja California and East Africa) and the northern movement of Africa and Australia which would merge with Europe and South-East Asia. Plus South America might separate from North America if one moves faster than the other
