| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! All pictures will be able to be found here: el-d0rito.deviantart.com Most future evolution projects take place in the more distant future, over 5 million years away. But life can evolve and change over much shorter timescales. This especially applies after extinction events. Only a few hundred thousand years after the K-Pg extinction, Palaeocene mammals had already become larger than any known Mesozoic mammal. Today, a similar, though as yet less severe extinction event is taking place. Already most of the megafauna that existed for the past several million years have gone extinct, leaving niches open. The only things keeping them open are human activities and time. But history and common sense tell us that at some point in the next thousand years our planetary civilisation will probably collapse, largely eliminating the main factor stopping life carrying on. Fast forward 1 million years, and the 'wild' is again the normal state of the earth. The oceans have risen some 80 metres due to human induced climate change, for the same reason most of the worlds ice is gone too. Several super volcanoes have erupted, and the last remnants of the modern 'concrete jungle' have crumbled. Humans are rare, and are considerably different to 21st century people. They are no longer a significant force effecting the earth. Some groups of animals are identical to those we are familiar with, some are similar but obviously different, and a few are unlike anything found in the modern era. This is the world in 1 million years AD. Edited by El Dorito, Jan 5 2016, 08:55 PM.

Well it's similar to feathers in how it developed, but it's just a single fiber like hair. I guess the thing it is most similar to is hyrotrioskjans 'dracofuzz', even though that stuff doesn't actually exist. So no it's not really hair, but it looks like it and I thought that would have sparked a discussion given the controversy of hair and feathers in extinct reptiles. |

Actually, I've just realised this post has 3770 views as of me writing this comment. Wouldn't that make it one of the most viewed things on this forum? Also what is the most viewed post here?

I don't know what the most viewed post here but it's probably the longer running projects like JohnFaa's Lemuria or Sheather's Sheatheria (I think that's Sheather's project) |

To be honest I thought this wouldn't get this far at all, I mean 1000 views is pretty normal if a project receives a lot of attention, but this if getting close to 4000 views... I guess a lot of people are watching and not commenting. And given that this project has existed for only a few months as opposed to years in the case of some other projects. I'm not trying to self-promote myself, but this might be a new record. |

Just today actually, I had an idea of a possible shape for a future 'pseudo-vertebrate' that could coexist with tetrapods during the formation and existence of Novopangaea, from 200 MyF onwards. I have no idea what these things could be descended from, I'm thinking either sea cucumbers or worms, or perhaps sea slugs. This isn't going to be shown in the project for quite some time, but unless something catastrophic happens and the project gets deleted, it will probably be shown eventually. Kaijusauria part 2 Picture: coming soon In part 1, I discussed the evolution and anatomical features of one group of group of kaijusaurs, the falcatatively bipedal Oxodontids of the southern half of the continent of East Africa. But the kaijusaurs themselves will in time become a very diverse group, and ultimately will succeed mammals as the new dominant animals. But even at this relatively early time in their evolution there is already considerable variation, some species are small, others large, and a few are among the largest animals in their environments. But at this stage most species are carnivorous, and a few are some of the biggest land predators of all time (well, excluding dinosaurs). Many of them fall into the group known as the Horridosauria. Though the name could just as accurately mean 'horrific lizard', the name actually describes the fact that parts of these animals are 'hairy', with the root word horridus having multiple meanings, one of them being 'hairy'. Though the name also implies that these things are constantly angry and rampage everywhere, they are actually quite timid, and in this state will generally ignore things they would otherwise consider prey when they are in a more active mood. In fact 70% of the time you might see a horridosaur, it will act completely oblivious to your presence (unless you sit on it or something stupid like that). This, however, also assumes that humans are around at this time in the future, which they are not (at least not on earth). In body form, horridosaurs are rather obviously different from Oxodontids, as they are almost totally quadrupedal, only standing up for brief periods to survey their surroundings or show dominance. They are also markedly more primitive than both Oxodontids and 'neokaijusaurs' (=other kaijusaurs). However compared to other reptiles, their skull is highly developed, and is less like a lizards skull and superficially more similar to the skulls of terrestrial crocodiles and dinosaurs. Assuming later kaijusaurs are akin to mammals, the horridosaurs are sort of like the gorgonopsids of the lineage. Another rather important attribute that horridosaurs have in relation to other kaijusaurs is their size, with several species in two different genera each able to reach 8 metres long and weigh in at the best part of 1 ton, they are the biggest land lizards* of all time, with only some mosasaurs and the contemporary Neptune Skark being physically larger, and both of those are marine. Most of these larger genera are also considerably larger than most of the animals they hunt. All kaijusaurs originated about 15 MyF, probably in the hot equatorial forests from India to Australia, and may have evolved originally as hybrids of local Asian monitor lizards and northward invading Australian monitors. Over the geologically brief time of 5 million years, these lizards ultimately became the kaijusaurs. *(larger kaijusaurs will obviously exist in the more distant future, but it would be unrealistic to call them 'lizards' in the same way it would be unrealistic to call all mammals cynodonts, or something like that). For anyone who finds this project, check out 'Neo-vertebrates'. It's basically the sequel to this project and is set in 200 million years on the next supercontinent. |
