Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

1 Million years AD; The strange unfamiliar world of the not so distant future

Most future evolution projects take place in the more distant future, over 5 million years away. But life can evolve and change over much shorter timescales. This especially applies after extinction events. Only a few hundred thousand years after the K-Pg extinction, Palaeocene mammals had already become larger than any known Mesozoic mammal.

Today, a similar, though as yet less severe extinction event is taking place. Already most of the megafauna that existed for the past several million years have gone extinct, leaving niches open. The only things keeping them open are human activities and time. But history and common sense tell us that at some point in the next thousand years our planetary civilisation will probably collapse, largely eliminating the main factor stopping life carrying on.

Fast forward 1 million years, and the 'wild' is again the normal state of the earth. The oceans have risen some 80 metres due to human induced climate change, for the same reason most of the worlds ice is gone too. Several super volcanoes have erupted, and the last remnants of the modern 'concrete jungle' have crumbled. Humans are rare, and are considerably different to 21st century people. They are no longer a significant force effecting the earth.

Some groups of animals are identical to those we are familiar with, some are similar but obviously different, and a few are unlike anything found in the modern era. This is the world in 1 million years AD.

No offence, but 'grand white shark' sounds less original than what is already there. Also there is more evidence that megalodon is part of the Otodontidae, in the Carcharocles genus.

I'l add some more stuff later today.

Something is only dead if you let it be dead. Updates mean it isn't dead. Your choice.

Probably all true, I've been on a sort of holiday for the last two weeks so I'm not really up to date.

However I have done some drawings of some of the things I mentioned earlier. Will post later today.

Many things can alter the way people post. For those that are still in school... it's school. For adults it might be work. But forums don't seem to be dead actually. There is still LIFE!
“There's a tree," Starflight said, jumping to his feet. "In the forest."
"No way," Glory said. "A tree in the forest?”

I'm actually going to go back to school next week, but that shouldn't change what I do on here. I understand that for some people it is more time consuming.

Most of what I meant before is that when I started this project, there was a four page discussion about one animal, whereas now there can be two or more new animals on a single page and maybe 3 comments. I'm not really sure why people would lose interest when I actually did what was suggested (move into the more distant future)...

There's not a great deal to comment on. Other than liking a post, maybe the occaisonal 'cool', what else do you want us to do? If we don't have any nitpicks or criticisms, there isn't anything to say.

I suppose il just have to creat something that is 'unrealistic'. I do have an idea for endothermic terrestrial squamates (both lizards and snakes), including bipedal monitor descendants that kind of look like 'retro-theropods'. More on that later.

If any of you have been on my deviantart account you might have seen one of my ideas I have yet to post here, although I'm going to post it later today.

Aerofobornithiformes

Picture

In today's world mammals are dominant, with both birds and reptiles neglected to secondary niches for the most part. But obviously this was not always the case, and baring a total mass extinction of tetrapods, it won't be the last either.

Aerofobornithiformes are a relatively small order of macropredatory birds descended from storks. First evolving some 12 MyF, within a few million years they became large carnivores, and soon after they evolved a serrated beak to more effectively render flesh. However the more remarkable fact that they never lost their ability to fly.

By 30 MyF, Aerophobornithiformes had split into two main groups, the lightly built and widespread Hastocilonids, and the huge robust Aerophobornithids proper. Hastocilonids are quite similar to modern Marbou storks, and are generally scavengers or hunters of small prey. The Aerofobornithids are rather unlike any bird today. The type genus, Aerofobornis (lower left on picture) itself, is the largest bird ever that is capable of flight, with a wingspan of 9 metres, and a weight of 30kg or more. In addition to its massive serrated beak and visibly huge size, they are also surprisingly fast for a flying bird, with their large foot claws providing traction enabling them to run after even quite fast prey. The largest member of the order, and only flightless species, is Uberynchornis morteus, the 'epic beak bird of death', and the largest carnivorous theropod since the end of the Cretaceous, at 4 metres tall, 350 kg in weight, and with a massive battle axe of a head it is the apex predator almost anywhere it occures.

I'm not really sure how you found that hostile, maybe it's the lack of emotion in internet comments.

Maybe we, and others, should talk about something else before this argument gets going. Arguments in that manner are never really productive.

Actually, to try and avoid 'copying' other people, and because I'm not that knowledgeable on the subject. What kinds of mammals would be likely to exist in 10+ million years time? I've had some ideas about marine mammals, and also an idea about a group of carnivorous rodents that resemble thylacoleonids to avoid the 'predator rat' dog-like shape, but beyond that I've got nothing. I'm very open for ideas if anyone has any.

Well plenty of small and adaptable mammals could survive in that time; rodents (obv), bats, small canids and felids, lagomorphs (rabbits and hares in case no one knew), mustelids, civets, maybe some small monkeys, seals, perhaps some armadillo species and even possibly some larger ungulates like deer, some camelids, goats, pigs and antelope.

Oh no, I didn't find anything offensive or hostile (admittedly I'm rather bad at guessing emotions). I was just saying that there's no need to worry about it. Just because there's not many replies doesn't mean people aren't looking at it. Besides, it can actually be a good thing: since they're not commenting, it shows there's nothing implausible to comment on.
Apologies for derailing the thread.
