Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

It's funny how creationists seem to think that evolution is some sort of global conspiracy agreed upon by the eeeevil scientists, despite the fact that there are so many disagreements about the details of evolution which wouldn't happen if it were all just an agreed upon lie for whatever strange and nefarious purpose the creationists think it was made up for. And it's funny how creationists accuse scientists of fabricating evidence for evolution when more often it's the other way around; most big-name creationists have been caught fabricating evidence for creationism on multiple occasions.

Keep in mind this doesn't represent young-earth creationists as a whole, probably not even that close at all. A lot might be a bit iffy or "I don't really know or care" on evolution, but most people really aren't that extreme.

The internet is great at generalizing beliefs and stereotypes (one of the reasons I identify as agnostic instead of atheist is that a lot of people hear "atheist" and thinks of someone with views on religion like those of, say, AronRa).

Gradualism vs. punctuated equilibrium, for one (though I'm not sure how much that debate is still ongoing). Plus smaller issues like the "ground up vs. trees down" question of bird evolution.

Not a direct online encounter, but somewhat relevant to this thread-- selections from Wikipedia's list of long-term vandals:

The ceiling fan guy reminds me of something I recently saw on iNaturalist: a troll who went around tagging every post, plants and animals alike, as armadillos. According to an admin I contacted, this user had made several sockpuppets and been at it for hours.

Not something that happened to me personally, but something I've been observing very closely.

https://storify.com/jasperrolls/the-silent-hill-wiki-circumcision-meltdown-of-2015

Apparently one of the admins over at the Silent Hill wiki is absolutely convinced that the entire series is one giant symbol pertaining to circumcision, and has been editing the articles to reflect his viewpoints and banning anybody who tries to disprove him.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg, the actual discussion is even weirder. If you have the time, I would highly suggest tracking down the discussion thread (under the Walter Sullivan profile) and reading about what this guy has to say about Silent Hill's symbolism. It's quite possibly one of the most bizarre things I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

It sounds like if this guy did long jumping instead of jumping to conclusions, he'd be a gold medal olympian. How do you even get circumcision out of something like silent hill?

EDIT: Having read the whole article, I now appreciate the scale of the stupidity at work here. Good lord.

Oh my god guys, if you need a good laugh, read the link Ghidorah gave. It is hilarious.

I mean, why can't any of us "BRAINWASHED idiots" realize the ancient evil illuminati art of circumcision causes lifelong psyche issues that cause mental illness and traumatize us our entire lives right? I mean, one of the self proclaimed biggest Silent Hill fans said it, how can it not be true?

I think my favorite thing about circumcision guy is how he lists water fluoridation as an ongoing atrocity on the level of rampant police brutality. Crank magnetism at work?

Yup. If I'm remembering correctly, he was also vehemently against circumcision. Or maybe it was another person I'm thinking of...

Yeah, he's vehemently against circumcision. Mind you, I'm also against it, it's medical benefits seem to be largely superfluous in the first world, and people should typically make their own decisions about their body.

I don't think it traumatises very many people, if at all, and most people who are circumcised seem to be fine with it.

Yeah, that was macgoblin.

The vehemence against it can be kind of irksome, though I agree about the bodily autonomy issue. I saw irksome because there's a tendency to treat it as irreparable mutilation that has profound physiological consequences, including the loss of normal sexual function (or at least that's what I've seen some people act like).

And, well, when you actually like your parents and are Jewish, that's a little bit annoying.

Dumbest people I've met online (who I don't think were trolling) are probably libertarians and anarcho-capitalists. The kind who think that slavery is acceptable if you sign the right contract, or that private arbitration is an effective means of resolving disputes. To these people, greed is sacrosanct, even attempting to have decent intentions makes you evil and repressive, and our current way of doing things only sucks because we have too much government regulation. Also global warming totally doesn't exist, or if it does it's not due to humans, or if it is we don't have to worry about it.

I tried debating with these people on a formal debate site for a year. Eventually I burned out from all the stupid.
