Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Strangest Online Encounters

I've been thinking about the Incan Empire and it reminded me of the strangest person I met online, if you've got a good story about a person or group you've met, feel free to share it.

So I do alternate history, and one world that I enjoy doing work for involves a Incan Empire that survives by converting to Catholicism and becoming part of the sphere of "real" nations that other Christian countries respect at least somewhat. Like Poland, Hungary, Scandinavia, etc.

So anyway, someone shows up on my deventiart page and starts mouthing off about how ridiculous and stupid my idea is. But the part they pick on is that the Inca would become Catholic. I was very confused by this as...this is what happened. At sword point perhaps, but it happened.

I then "learn" that no true Inca would become Catholic, so I ask what about Peru, Boliva, and Ecuador, who's populations are overwhelmingly Catholic, and the largest minor religions are also Christian. This person then informs me that they do not recognise the legitimacy of any of the South American nations.

This person claimed to live there, so I asked where, and they said in the Amazon rainforest.

A little more digging and, yup, wherever that person shows up it's to complain about some Native Peoples thing being wrong or incorrect, based on very poor information.

So that was my meeting with a very low effort Grey Owl/Crying Indian.

I've had a handful of bizarre encounters on Deviantart. I seem to draw an unusual amount of them. Someone once started a conversation with me on a Tomb Raider picture which they quickly drove into how much they wanted to watch very violent movies like Cannibal Holocaust. First and only time I ever purposely deleted a comment from my notifications.

The weirdest thing I've seen recently was someone on Tumblr claiming that being against people cheating on their significant others automatically makes you approve of slut shaming.

Tumblr is automatically cheating, due to the amount of insane people there.

I don't even really like this song that much but the title is pretty relatable sometimes, I guess.

I'd say throw Reddit in there as well.

Anonymity + publicity = assholery. It's the internet's most basic equation.

I've been yelled at in various online games for no apparent reason. That's always fun.

I have to say that it was way bake in the primordial period of yotube, when I was stupid enough to read and respond to comments. There was some weirdo who was convinced that the world would end in 2009 and insisted that everyone watching the video should repent for their sins. I, the fool I was, responded to them over how dumb that sounded, but after a bit of arguing that got nowhere, we had decided that we would tell the incorrect individual that they were hilariously wrong once 2009 came along. I unfortunately forgot who wrote that by 2009, and I still have yet to mock them for their error.

I have a couple of people in my class who started using tumblr at the very beginning of the year (a guy and a girl). It was almost like watching a documentary or something, they actually started from being Supernatural fans, then "became" (self-diagnosed themselves as) depressed, bisexual etc and then claiming things were sexist. These are 14-15 year olds, and you could totally see their opinions changing radically, so they could fit into the tumblr status quo in a way. It was really, really weird.

If you define "encounter" as "two-way communication": Years ago I exchanged words with a genuine white supremacist who posted incredibly verbose and arrogant pseudoscientific rants (it was kind of fun to provoke him and see how nasty he'd get). A few months ago, I argued with someone who thought that carnivorous animals should either be killed off or genetically modified into nice friendly herbivores.

But if you define "encounter" as "simply reading someone's posts"... too many to list. I recently read a very long-winded and detailed discussion on tumblr about the ethical ramifications of having sex with a dead chicken before you cook and eat it, and the implicit unconscious reasoning behind thinking it was wrong or not. The whole LessWrong/Roko's Basilisk kerfluffle is another bizarre rabbit hole I've fallen down; same goes for discussion of the "Mandela Effect," and a great deal of conspiracy theories of all types. I can read that stuff for hours (but probably shouldn't).

You know, I don't know what to say to this. There's just too many questions raised by this that frankly, I don't really think I want an answer to.

Once on tumblr I mentioned that America's current gun laws could use some updating because, you know, it's a tad ridiculous for somebody to be able to purchase things like grenade launchers and automatic assault rifles (in certain states). Some guy went off in my inbox about how I was a "gun hating libtard" who "wanted to ban guns and kill all the christians in our CHRISTIAN nation" and was "literal trash that advocated government drone strikes on american civilians."

All I said was that there's no reason you should be able to buy an RPG.
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming
