Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

When I stumbled upon Sheather's Sereina project, it inspired me a lot, and I liked the idea of how 1 species of canary can fill the entire world.

I have wanted to do one with Paleognaths, an interesting group of birds, which contain Ratites, (Ostriches, Rheas, Emus, etc.) and Tinamous. I would love to do a project like this, but I have one problem. I need a scenario from you guys, where we can have dominant Paleognaths. it scored pretty high in my poll, so I decided to do it.

If you can, come up with a good scenario. I don't want it to be pretty boring, but just come up with a few
As of my gender, I have every gender imaginable, some even inconceivable to your minds. I have every gender in the gender spectrum, as well as ones you cannot envision.

Have them live on their own planet/moon, just like Serina. Simple but effective.
Current/Completed Projects
- After the Holocene: Your run-of-the-mill future evolution project.
- A History of the Odessa Rhinoceros: What happens when you ship 28 southern white rhinoceri to Texas and try and farm them? Quite a lot, actually.

Future Projects
- XenoSphere: The greatest zoo in the galaxy.
- The Curious Case of the Woolly Giraffe: A case study of an eocene relic.
- Untittled Asylum Studios-Based Project: The truth behind all the CGI schlock
- Riggslandia V.II: A World 150 million years in the making

Potential Projects
- Klowns: The biology and culture of a creepy-yet-fascinating being

I have a game idea. It's called 'Arthropods'. Imagine animals crossing except it's only catching bugs. Now imagine that 1000 times the scale. That's kinda what it is.

You can customize your character (name, gender, hair, eyes, skin color, etc). You live in a sizable coastal city. The head of the department of life sciences recruits you for a massive job. You see, you have traveled the world and know a lot about wildlife, particularly arthropods. So, they think you are the right choice for the job. However, your house and all your belongings have been destroyed in a tornado, so your very poor. This is also part of the reason they chose you, as you get paid for every arthropod you put on the island.

Said job is catching every known* arthropod species and putting it on an island. Don't worry, the department already bought the island. Marine species live in waters surrounding the island. Once you catch a new arthropod, you release it on or around the island. Due to plot magic and the sake of simplicity, the arthropods never leave the vicinity, never eat each other, and never die. Also for the sake of simplicity, there will be no specific real world countries or exact geographic ranges.

At first, you catch them with a net. Pretty simple. But as you gain money, you can buy more and more equipment such as flight interception traps, pitfall traps, scuba gear, etc. If you have enough money, you can even take expensive expeditions to places such as antarctica or the deep sea.

There are several broad biomes which each as it's own mostly unique set of arthropods (there is some overlap for very widespread species such as honeybees)

Desert
Jungle/Rain forest
Taiga
Temperate forest
Grassland
Urban
Tundra
Ice sheet
Shore
Seabed
Reef
Polar seas
Pelagic zone
Deep sea
Miscellaneous (for anything which doesn't fit into the above categories)

The island will be split up into sections with each biome. Species that appear in multiple biomes will be released into the biome in which you caught that individual. When released onto or around the island, the animal will wander within a certain space. Some will appear as a colony rather than one individual depending on the species (most ants for example).

Arthropods will have varying levels of rarity. These are

Common
Uncommon
Rare
Very rare (this category is mostly recently extinct species such as the xerces blue butterfly)

Once you have put an arthropod onto or around the island, you can not put it again. You can do one of 3 things with an arthropod that is already on the island.
1. Keep it as a pet (terrestrial species will appear in a bug cage, aquatic species in a tank)
2. Release it
3. Sell it (the amount it sells for will depend on the rarity)

The bug index is your encyclopedia. It organizes arthropods in two ways. By taxonomy, or by biome. In both ways, there are spoiler tabs with labels that you can click to reveal a bunch of arthropod pictures. Ones you have not caught yet will be black silhouettes. When clicked on, it will say "you have not caught this arthropod yet". Ones you have caught will be colored pictures of the arthropod in question. When clicked on, it says some information, including it's habitat, rarity, selling price, the amount you have caught, weather or not you have one on the island, and some real world info on the animal.

As said before, you can make money by selling extra arthropods. You can also make money by selling equipment or other items. You can use money not only to buy bug catching stuff, but also to buy and decorate a house. You start off in an apartment, but as you make money, you can move to more savory living spaces. But there is one more thing. The most expensive item in the game. A TIME MACHINE! Yes, you can travel back in time to catch arthropods of the past. Arthropods here will be split up not by biome, but by time period. Prehistoric arthropods will be released on and around a smaller island close to the main one.
Neogene
Paleogene
Cretaceous
Jurassic
Triassic
Permian
Carboniferous
Devonian
Silurian
Ordovician
Cambrian

So, what do you think of my idea?

*obviously, it wont include every species, but it will include a lot.
Projects
Punga: A terraformed world with no vertebrates
Last one crawling: The last arthropod

ARTH-6810: A world without vertebrates (It's ded, but you can still read I guess)

Potential ideas-
Swamp world: A world covered in lakes, with the largest being caspian sized.
Nematozoic: After a mass extinction of ultimate proportions, a single species of nematode is the only surviving animal.
Tri-devonian: A devonian like ecosystem with holocene species on three different continents.

So I've had a real kick off of Teraformed worlds for both Under New Suns and Karkinos, as they are from the same universe, and was thinking of doing a series of mini-projects dedicated to that lore. Not as in detail as Karkinos or as extreme in timescale but exploring the many seeded worlds of that universe. Ideas for worlds include:
A pachycephalosaur dominated desert planet with a few large inland seas.
Exploring the life of the Under New Suns world, may make this into a closed community project for the players.
A water world dominated solely with jellyfish
A world where narwhals and their respective prey are the only added aprgansims
Projects Currently Being Worked Upon:

Karkinos: Where faith meets myth on a world of the strangely familiar.
Under New Suns: The forums own colonisation race! Steep yourself in my lore....

Projects in suspension (for when inspiration hits):

- Galapagaia
- Rich Man's Ark (nice little bit of community spec :P)
- Ichor

Projects for a latter day:

If an alien planet doesn't suit your fancy, you could have an abandoned zoon on a pacific islands be all that's left after a series of bombings, and ratites and tiamous survive by sheer luck?

Or perhaps transport some ratites and relatives to the Carboniferous, giving them a major headstart on other large vertebrates.

Or have a human made virus wipe out mammals on land, and those large flightless birds take over the major roles of megafauna?
Current Projects:
Alien Earth
Ultimate Pangea

Potential Future Projects
Future of the North Star: TBD

Has anyone done a Squamezoic yet?

It's pretty much that instead of mammals rising after dinosaurs, it's squamates. does anyone here like it? it's pretty brief, but I'll add more to it later. I just stated the general concept

God dammit Naish did it.

How about a planet dominated by lizards and kin? anyone buy it? Vote A. or B for which one I should do.

A. Squamezoic

B. Planet of the reptiles

A Cafe Cosmique project about a very large zoological park for various alien species, with large city-sized domes simulating the environments other planets and moons, right down to having gravity artificially modified.
....Holy shit, I could have so much goddamn fun with that concept. Would you mind if I did something similar?

Apes! Together! Strong!

Sorry, watched some clips from that today. Though because of that, even if it's not quite a spec project, I thought about what it might be like if Planet of the Apes went a more Alfred Hitchcock route. In that intelligence is given to birds, not apes. Corvids and Parrots would probably make the bulk of it, but I don't know if any other bird species would fit as well. The main thing to explore with this scenario, I feel, is that given the size difference between the birds and people, and the lack of a subsequent flu to cull the populous, The Flock (as I've been thinking of them) would be forced to either keep traveling to keep contact with people at a minimum, or try to solve things amicably. And of course, the humans would have to come to terms with not being the only intelligence on the planet anymore.

Magpies and bowerbirds might qualify - pigeons could also be a pretty fun one to do.

Well magpies are under the Corvid umbrella, but bowerbirds would be a cool add on. Didn't know if Pigeons would fit, but I'm not against it if it makes sense.
