| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! It partly depends on how much pressure there is. Bottom of pond, yes. Bottom of ocean or very deep lake, much less likely. It's also hard for the bottom to get cold before everything else freezes. I assume this happens in the first place because the hydrogen atoms are aligned with the oxygen atom, yes? |

I've recently been looking into some Miocene fauna, and I've thought of this (rather outlandish) project: Sometime in the Miocene, probably the Tortonian, Venus is terraformed by an unknown alien species and Earth fauna/flora from said time period are placed on the newly terraformed planet. 10 million years later, space probes are sent to Venus. What they discover is beyond imagination... |

During 2250, humanity creates self-replicating solar powered 'grey goo' nanobots. Eventually, they learn to mimic viruses and manage to wipe out humans due to an error in programming. The remnants of humanity leave Earth for Mars and manage to shut of the harmful nanobots. The remaining bots manage to rebuild earth by fusing with organic lifeforms. Earth in 10 million years is a world were every living being is a cyborg by fusing with the goo. Also, animals can use it as a weapon. For example, snakes can now spit corrosive acid that can burn someone's skin off and dogs can change the shape of their teeth just by thinking. |

A planet in which the only land vertebrates are primates. Excluding humans, of course. The focus of the project would be 200 million years after the introduction of the primates, seeing how they have evolved and from what they evolved. Other animals like insects and fish would be present. |

That's fine. Many projects are like that. My Littoralis project was basically Serina with salamanders. My whole cylinder-world multiverse is like that. There's no shame in it. |

As long as the project is different enough I think that anyone can take another's basic idea and do something completely new. No shame in taking inspiration from another. |

Exactly. In hindsight, maybe saying our projects were Serina clones wasn't entirely accurate. Edited by Talenkauen, Jun 7 2017, 12:30 PM.

All Under Heaven: The Breadth of Creation In the beginning, there was nothing. Then, it fucking exploded. -The Emerald Tablets of Thoth God is a busy guy. A couple billion years ago, he created the Earth. The Firmament to separate the waters above from the waters below. The sun and the moon, to separate the days from the nights. The seas, the lands, the pillars, and Hell. He had grand designs, and put down the first single-celled life forms as a preface to his instantaneous and miraculous creation of all life. Then, he got distracted. Some pretty boy Angel got too big for his britches or something. Now he's come back, but it's like he didn't. After doing a few floods and smiting a dick or two, he's focused all of his attention on one minor tribe of goat-herders in the middle east. Without him watching, shit has gotten crazy: evolution has taken its own course. Strange and miraculous life forms have emerged, from the Pit of Abbadon to the endless seas of the Waters Above, and everything in between. Human societies have likewise gone all pear shaped. There's the League of the Ziggurat, dedicated to building a tower high enough to reach heavens, or the Empire of Moroni, a bunch if wacky Jews trapped in America, or the United Kingdom of Great Brutan, a maritime empire founded by the trojan prince Brutus. Come with me, and follow my biological examination of all creatures under heaven. |

So, it's a mixture of spec evo and alternate history on a typical Biblical-style Earth? Neat. |

Oh, is this project about the mythical beasts that some creationists claim to have existed before the great flood? |

On the topic of myths and legends: I know this has been done many times before, but a project that details if cryptids and mythological creatures were real. It would go into what they are and their evolutionary history, and why they are so rarely sighted (which is mainly because of habitat destruction and hunting.) Another fantasy world: Terra Fantasia, which I suppose is kinda like a reboot of my "old" project Asedriam, but this time without magic and different races. I might also change the geography somewhat, but I do want it to remain consistent with IRL Earth's geography as their basically parallel worlds. I might actually combine the two project ideas into one, but I'm not sure. Maybe at least they'll be interconnected somehow. |

or is it assuming that some illustrations of the OT anatomy of the heavens? (with literal pillars, an ocean above and an ocean below, etc) I suspect that it could too easily slip into antisemitism, even undeliberately so. |

In a bit of an expansion of my Island of Sloths idea, I've been thinking of having that version of earth have a few other differences. Just some other species that don't exist in our world, but is otherwise the same ecology wise, hidden way in some of the remote corners. What I got in mind so far is; A group of wasps that can hijack mammalian reproductive systems. A species of Trilobite that survived by forming a symbiotic relationship with chemosynthetic bacteria. An hidden geothermal lake deep under Antarctica, home to the last of the temnospondyls, among others. Or maybe I'll just add them to the alternate world exploration idea I've also got, but part of me wants to give my project world some flavor if I can fit it in comfortably. |
