| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Well, that digestive track is really simple even in most mammals. It's just a tube with a bulge in the middle. Food comes in one end, poop out the other. It works like that for most bilaterian animals.
Well, humans are exceptional in this regard. They far surpass their fellow mammals. But, I understand what your saying. Edited by IIGSY, Apr 15 2017, 07:32 PM.

I wonder if other phrases were tried out, but things like "the rotten boroughs of evolution" never quite caught on. |

for a while, IIGS seemed to be better, had made a thread of IIGS's own, partook in forum activities well...and then, that happened. |

Oh my. I don't want this to happen again.
What exactly are you referring to? |

we suggested (a few times) that you make a thread which lets invert.s dominate (as you'd asked most of us to let happen in our projects)...and you made such a thread. |

That's just the general concept of a digestive system though. Food comes in on one end, everything useful is taken out of the food, and any waste products leave it at one end, which for bilaterian animals is the other opposite end of the mouth. Complexity isn't within the general concept of an organ system, but rather in the way it accomplishes that concept. If we go back to the nematode VS gorilla comparison, we see that the former keeps it simple with merely a mouth, a gut lined with a few enzyme-producing glands, and a rectum. The latter on the other hand is a lot more complex in its organizational structure (if that makes sense) and its division of digestive tasks. Both its gastrointestinal tract and its 'enzyme-producing glands' are a lot more diverse in structure en tasks in any way. |

Would people be interested in a Europa exploration RPG? Here's the basic setting: The first few missions to Europa were cancelled due to various reasons. When a mission is set up for real a couple of decades from now, speeds and technology have improved enough to allow scientists, astrologists and operators to go in Europa's orbit and stay there for several weeks. And they'd better do, as the probes that will explore Europa's underice ocean wouldn't be of much use on their own. Probe description: -Communication with crew on the satelite: Europa's thick ice makes it technically challenging to communicate directly with the satelite. Therefore, they'll return once daily at a specific location under the ice, where a connection tube will be drilled through the thick ice. The data they gathered and the instructions for the next exploration are then relayed through it. -Sonar: the probes have no long range sonar due to concerns it might disturb any potential alien life, just how it disturbs cetaceans on Earth. -Operation range: probes are electrically powered and on a single charge can go almost all the way around the moon. However, Europa's currents are unmapped and there are concerns strong unexpected currents can hurl the probes too far away or make them lost. Therefore the initial missions will be limited in range as currents are mapped and their limitations become better known. Recharging is once daily during communication. -AI: Unlike Mars rovers, simple instructions don't suffice. There could be many unexpected situations in which the probes would need to make realtime decisions on their own. Because of that they are equipped with onboard AI that has been tested on Earth and can make quite decent self-preservation decisions. Still, the majority of the missions will be dictated by humans. The probes have limited natural language processing capabilities, capable of understanding mainly simple, one-verb sentences, if-then statements, and vocabulary related to Europa and themselves. There'll be one to three probes depending on initial interest. People would role play as scientists, astrologists and the like and would have to agree on joint objectives for the next mission, one per probe, consisting of about one paragraph. The onboard probe technician (me) is to tell the rest how likely would be for the probes to interpret the mission objectives and if there's anything wrong with them. One ingame day would correspond to one week, with updates during the weekend. |

A project similar to 'The Holocene' and the All Today's concept in general, only the premise is inverted: a sophont native to the Oligocene/Miocene border (while I will not state what exactly they are, they're a type of bird) speculates what life may be like in the future (AKA the Present day). |

Current/Completed Projects - After the Holocene: Your run-of-the-mill future evolution project. - A History of the Odessa Rhinoceros: What happens when you ship 28 southern white rhinoceri to Texas and try and farm them? Quite a lot, actually. Future Projects - XenoSphere: The greatest zoo in the galaxy. - The Curious Case of the Woolly Giraffe: A case study of an eocene relic. - Untittled Asylum Studios-Based Project: The truth behind all the CGI schlock - Riggslandia V.II: A World 150 million years in the making Potential Projects - Klowns: The biology and culture of a creepy-yet-fascinating being My Zoochat and Fadom Accounts - Zoochat - Fandom

Considering how people on discord talk about anything I've ever done one here, largely because it involves my speculative simulation handwave, I've been considering doing what many would call a 'real' project going off of Trollman's Indomadagascar COM as a launching point, with a worse K-Pg and cheeky Indomadagascar going off and doing its own shizzle messaging up plate techtonics changing Earth's evolutionary history drastically. |
|
Projects Currently Being Worked Upon: Karkinos: Where faith meets myth on a world of the strangely familiar. Under New Suns: The forums own colonisation race! Steep yourself in my lore.... Projects in suspension (for when inspiration hits): - Galapagaia - Rich Man's Ark (nice little bit of community spec :P) - Ichor Projects for a latter day:

An alternate world in which vertebrates AND arthropods (and maybe mollusks) die out early, leaving all the smaller phyla to take over. |

sounds like a great idea. though, maybe have the arthropods and vert.s die out first...and then 50-100 million years later, the molluscs join them? |

I'm thinking- once I've done some more entries on Nibiru- about doing a very different project. It involves introducing a small amount of Cambrian Sirius Passet and Chengjiang creatures into an exoplanetary super-earth. It'll probably involve a whole lot of weird derived parapeytoids, a climate completely different to Earth's, and a rewrite of Chordate evolution. |
