Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Registration is free and instantaneous.

Also had an idea for slimes I was really proud of.

F.I.N.D.R Field Incident Logs
A comprehensive list of all organisms, artifacts, and alternative worlds encountered by the foundation team.

At the present time, concepts within are inconsistent and ever shifting.

(And this is just the spec related stuff)

the only thing i can think of/recall that had such a background, was Fossil-Hunter by Robert J. Sawyer...though those were Nannotyrannuses which had evolved sapience.

i highly reccommend the series.
I long ago read that entire trilogy- Far-Seer, Fossil Hunter and Foreigner. It is indeed a very interesting series. :)

Speculative Evolution Projects-

Other Relevant Work-

Final SE Lifelist standings

BREAKING NEWS
We interrupt your regular programming to bring you this cutting edge report.
ATTENDANCE DROPS DRASTICALLY ON SE SERVER
This past Monday on Discord, famous server Speculative Evolution took a hit in the attendance office when it's offline member list suddenly reappeared. Mods scrambled to rectify the situation, but unfortunately there was little anyone could do. Server member Ivan was asked what he thought of the situation. "So long as Flisch, lord of machines and scion of Urborg lives, all will be well". SE, (in)famous for it's eccentric userbase, has recently been spiraling downward, and now we have hard conformation of the decline. Moderator "High Lord" Icthyander states "There is nothing to be concerned about, Discord is merely changing its UI again", but members are beginning to suspect the honesty of their staff.
Stay tuned, we'll be back with more at 11.

I'm reminded of when I tried to create a world where magic and superpowers were just traits organisms could develop. Never really lost interest in the idea, but I'm kind of lost as to the direction it should take. Should I base it of earth life? Should I try "aliens" with those powers? Maybe combine it with my Aether idea, but would that spoil the idea I already pitched?
I always wondered what had happened to that. Is still salty that dinosaurs never got superpowers.

I have a habit of going into what is probably too much excess detail about the things I work on. I need to try to keep things at a manageable size.

A world where most fauna has been created/assembled by huge humanoids (think nicer versions of the Harvesters) like puppets.
Current/Completed Projects
- After the Holocene: Your run-of-the-mill future evolution project.
- A History of the Odessa Rhinoceros: What happens when you ship 28 southern white rhinoceri to Texas and try and farm them? Quite a lot, actually.

Future Projects
- XenoSphere: The greatest zoo in the galaxy.
- The Curious Case of the Woolly Giraffe: A case study of an eocene relic.
- Untittled Asylum Studios-Based Project: The truth behind all the CGI schlock
- Riggslandia V.II: A World 150 million years in the making

Potential Projects
- Klowns: The biology and culture of a creepy-yet-fascinating being

So after all that stuff about more fantastical spec, I've been reading the SCP foundation again. It's making me look over the list of projects I have thought up and wonderng if I can add some of that flair to them. Might even help with that organization problem I was having back in the WDYWTTAT topic.

EDIT: of course, part of me is worried that people like the original concepts I wrote better,, and that I'll disappoint them if I play looser with them now.

Abandoned Worlds

It's the far future, and humanity is steadily colonizing numerous worlds in numerous star systems. But not all colonies fare well. Some die out, others revolt or go insane, and others find themselves changing into things not quite human anymore.

This project would be a bit more of speculative anthropology, but with some proper spec thrown in there (human settler's interactions with local fauna/flora, descriptions of settlements populated largely by posthumans/genetically modified humans).
Dumb Quotes

Coming Soon/To be Rebooted:

How To Hunt Gods - Everything you need to know about Gods and the art of God-killing.

Intrazoology - The world of semi-corporeal lifeforms. A world you walk through every day, without even knowing it.

The Dungeonverse - Magical creatures forced to adapt in huge, underground caverns, while surface-dwelling humans go dungeoneering for treasure.

Crossover - A mish-mash of worlds, with Earth smack in the middle of the chaos. What could go wrong?

no worries

AKA if Brad Bird made a horror flick.

Seriously, anything that Flash does would make for a great movie (though execs might remove the speculative evolution elements from it....).

Making B movies plausible is another fun pastime, even if it's a slightly more widespread one.

What about a world where Dryolestids, Notosuchians, and Allotherians survived to the present day?
If only someone had done that...
Gondwanan Madagascar

Never got round to the Crocs though.

Which brings me onto a new idea. I feel I do my best when working on a small area, islands have worked well for me. Huge sprawling things just don't seem to materialize, though they have been held back my me working full time too.

So I want to do a project set on chain of large oceanic, volcanic islands, before the evolution of birds and bats. Jurassic Hawaii, if you will. It's a habitat that undoubtedly existed, that we know nothing about. The fact such islands erode and subduct away means we may never know about what lived on them.

It would be a limited time and place, and it would give me a limited pallet to work with, which would also force me into doing more with invertebrates and plants.

The only problem is I need to learn about Jurassic invertebrates and plants, and bone up on pterosaurs, marine reptiles and tectonics too.

If I manage to make something interesting, I could do a prequel on a island chain before pterosaurs. Imagine that, a Permian island where arthropods rule.
