Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

A universe that has a single viewpoint, where most life is made up of living simple shapes (basically what would happen if Pablo Picasso got into biology).
Current/Completed Projects
- After the Holocene: Your run-of-the-mill future evolution project.
- A History of the Odessa Rhinoceros: What happens when you ship 28 southern white rhinoceri to Texas and try and farm them? Quite a lot, actually.

Future Projects
- XenoSphere: The greatest zoo in the galaxy.
- The Curious Case of the Woolly Giraffe: A case study of an eocene relic.
- Untittled Asylum Studios-Based Project: The truth behind all the CGI schlock

I would be interested in that, Sphenodon.

I am all for spec based on other worldly or supernatural phenomenon.

Given the interest in the idea, perhaps I could actually get around to starting it. I might need some creative help at times (especially concerning dogscape-derived lineages - namely, ones feasible enough to justify their existence), but with the others I could probably paint a suitably wide-range picture of that post-post-Apocalyptic world. First off would be where to put the project - do you handwave the Dog's spread and make everything else reasonable, putting it in Evolutionary Continuum, or does the very existence of the Dog fit it into Alt. Universes/Cafe Cosmique?

Ghoulboudin

Another idea I've had is a terraformed planet seeded with a lot of different lineages that never really took off on earth: drepanosaurs, chalicotheres, pareiasaurs, etc.

This could prove to be quite a lucrative and creative project (certainly a unique one). I'd back it.

Ghoulboudin

And another idea: A planet seeded with a wide range of lineages that evolved for the same ecological niches, forcing them to compete with each other. Basically, it's Carnivora Forum: The Planet.

Another interesting concept. It'd be a challenge to keep track of all the lineages, but a rewarding challenge if executed properly.

Some of my ideas (nothing real yet, but soon):
Refugium: A last chance for collapsing ecosystems and their inhabitants.
Pansauria: A terraforming project featuring the evolution of exactly one animal - the marine iguana.
Mars Renewed: An insight into the life of Mars thirty million years after its terraforming by humankind.
Microcosm: An exceedingly small environment.
Alcyon: A planet colonized by species remodeled into new niches by genetic engineering.
Oddballs: Aberrant representatives of various biological groups compete and coexist.

..and probably some other stuff at some point (perhaps a no K-T project). Stay tuned!

A project where I desperately try to make the Flanimals be plausible. It doesn't work and I lay down on the floor and cry.

A project documenting an emerging ecosystem made up of organisms that have been mutated by some sort of magical radiation, inspired by this.

Here's a project idea I've been thinking of lately.
Over 3 million years ago a mysterious alien race comes to Earth, collects specimens of various species, puts them on a terraformed alien world and from there on things are left to evolve on their own. A sapient species evolves on the world from Australopithecus that were put there. These sophonts look similar to humans due to their geologically recent shared common ancestry, but will clearly have some differences from us.
One interesting theme to explore in such a project is how the sophonts in question would react to the clear evidence that there is something strange about their origins. After all, they would, like us, find evidence that they and other things on their world evolved from earlier ancestors, but unlike us they would find they can only trace said ancestry back quite geologically recently before getting to a point where they weirdly enough can't find any fossil record of any earlier precursor life forms. I'm also wondering about having the terraformed planet also have transplanted wildlife from some alien worlds as well as just from late Pliocene Earth, and this would create further mysteries for the alien australopith descendants to ponder.

If I ever do this project though, it will probably not be anytime soon, both because I'd need to first plan it out a lot more and because a lot of other things are keeping me occupied at the present time.

Oh you saw that too? I have a story idea about it but not a spec project.

That sounds interesting, though the "magical radiation" sounds similar to the "Auric energy" I've been developing for my upcoming project.

Basically, the backstory of the project would be that it's an alternate (or perhaps future) version of our world, where humanity has just started experimenting with magic as a self-replenishing, technically green energy source.

However, an effect of the magical radiation is that exposed organic tissues have the tendency to mutate wildly, often resulting in a somehow still-functioning organism that is highly morphologically, biologically, and often behaviorally different from what it once was. The types of mutations and anomalous effects can vary wildly.

Some organisms gain abilities. Some become violent and predatory where they were once gentle and timid, and vice versa. Some don't need to eat at all, gaining sustenance from the magical energy in the environment, or maybe even feeding off of their own magic that they themselves are radiating.

The project itself would, like the blog I linked, largely be documenting cases where "magical meltdowns" resulted in mass alterations of entire nearby ecosystems, as well as occasionally discussing individual cases, where scientists deliberately exposed organisms to large amounts of magical energy.

the only thing i can think of/recall that had such a background, was Fossil-Hunter by Robert J. Sawyer...though those were Nannotyrannuses which had evolved sapience.

i highly reccommend the series.

I'm kind of surprised that this forum has stuck to relatively formulaic "what if the K-T extinction never happened" and "5 million years in the future and also humans have mysteriously disappeared" type projects for so long. Not that those projects can't be fun or done originally, but still.

I feel like this forum's gotta let its hair down sometimes, project-wise, every now and then. Do more stuff with not super hard science premises.

I'm reminded of when I tried to create a world where magic and superpowers were just traits organisms could develop. Never really lost interest in the idea, but I'm kind of lost as to the direction it should take. Should I base it of earth life? Should I try "aliens" with those powers? Maybe combine it with my Aether idea, but would that spoil the idea I already pitched?

Try an alien world, that'd be interesting. Maybe there could be a slug like one with telekinesis whose only defense is carrying itself away from predators, throwing them away, or even just throwing rocks at them.

I do have a mental list of some powers and their natural uses, and one was a telekinetic shield like an armadillo shell. In fact, one idea was that it WAS an armadillo evolution.

I had a similar idea for the Multiverse - a universe where 'superhero powers' were real, and were used by a variety of animals which had evolved around the supernatural.
