Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

A planet with almost no atmosphere, and the complex organisms here somehow can live in vacuum.

So, the planet where the Givin from Star Wars live, but no atmosphere all of the time instead of all of the time.

I have some ideas for really isolated environments
- An environment like Lake Vostok, But with hydrothermal vents and complex life
- A sealed cave where life has become multicellular independently from all other earth life
- an extremely small island (under 20 feet in size)

Inspired by a comment on the general talking-thread, I've been looking through locations that were thought to exist, but actually never did. And these things are ripe for speccing!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Island,_New_Caledonia - the most recent one on the lists, only found to not be real in 2012! Perhaps in honor of its true nature going undetected for so long, it could be home to some late-surviving creatures like mekosuchines or cousins to the tuatara.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerald_Island_(phantom) - Could be a nice little project, along with its 'siblings' the Dougherty Island and the Royal Company's Islands.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Brendan%27s_Island - An island off the coast of Africa that is apparently heavily wooded and very sunny, one of many alleged paradises. Perhaps the fruit on the island could actually be inedible to humans as a twist of irony.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountains_of_Kong - The potential effects of these mountains on Africa's climate honestly intrigues me even more than the animals that might live there.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meropis - It's no Atlantis, but an Atlantic island with potentially descendants of Mediterranean fauna blown out to sea? Sounds good to me!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anson_Archipelago - Another neat little set of fictional Pacific Islands that could have some unique organisms living there.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Parime - Linked to El Dorado itself, perhaps a civilization could settle along these shores.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buenaventura_River_(legend) - As with the Mountains of Kong, the implications that this would have on the continent honestly intrigues me more than the animals that might live there.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahara_Sea - Could be used in both an alternative evolution project where this sea was natural and had been there all along, or in a future evolution project where it came to fruition.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candyn - A new Southeast Asian island, potentially home to some unique forms of the typical fauna found in the region.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Legouve_Reef - I could see this project as being similar in scope to Haemos Island - a barren little rock where life stubbornly refuses to die out.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island_of_California - Could be home to a bizarre mix of Pleistocene fauna and relicts from whenever the project author decides to have the place split off.

More examples are listed here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Phantom_islands

Another two concepts that could be explored are Terra Australis and Shangri-La - neither of these have ever been covered on this forum, as far as I know.

I've actually been working on a project centering around the island of California concept. It's been developing slowly due to my other two projects, but I really like the idea of a massive island just off the west coast of the US.

I once had an idea, when I was younger, about a world that is only floating islands, continents, and seas. My thought was that life would have been more prone towards flying, and that the skies would have many strange groups all competing against one another. A world of floating islands was way to hard for me to wrap my head around, because I had no idea how day/night and weather would even work.

I once tried to make a floating island project, but I too struggled with the physics of it all.

The broken Mirror

A world where mammals flourish after the T-J extinction and become the dominant megafauna. Dinosaurs remain small, until the Cenozoic.
Projects

Avisia, an island archipelago isolated for over 88 million years, and is know home to megafaunal birds, mekosuchine crocodiles, and many relics. (currently in infancy)

This sounds like it would be a very interesting project to see.

2 Project ideas that have been bouncing around in my head for ages:

A serina style terraformed world where monotremes are the main species, along with a few essential organisms.

A terraformed planet with the only species introduced being living fossils, and essential organisms.

(Not really a full project, just an idea) A population of sapient australopithicines are discovered within a remote region of Africa. They are promptly captured and experimented on.

Why are Elephants and Rhinos so underused in spec?
Everyone thinks they'll die.

A spec project where the most endangered/unique familiar amniotes are taken to a terraformed world to be preserved and begin to diversify (e.g. rhinos, elephants, orangutans, pangolins, tigers), (kakapos, kagu, giant ibis), (leatherback sea turtle, gharial, chinese crocodile lizard)
