Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

A terraformed world with only the marine iguana and the algae it eats.
Projects
Punga: A terraformed world with no vertebrates
Last one crawling: The last arthropod

ARTH-6810: A world without vertebrates (It's ded, but you can still read I guess)

Potential ideas-
Swamp world: A world covered in lakes, with the largest being caspian sized.
Nematozoic: After a mass extinction of ultimate proportions, a single species of nematode is the only surviving animal.
Tri-devonian: A devonian like ecosystem with holocene species on three different continents.

I've recently come across a nice amount of time to do speculation in and have such began rebooting some of my earlier content as shown by the emergence of Rich Man's Ark II. As such, I was planning on doing a reboot of Karkinos (as much of the environment I want to work within has changed) and I'd just like to get a feel for some of the concepts now. New life will be breathed into my older concepts and musings now that I can acquire some excellent art from my senpais. Feedback and discussion would be greatly appreciated.

1. I wanted Karkinos to have a far more 'alien' feel surrounding it, which I began to achieve when I divulged some of the biochemistry that went behind making Karkinan organisms unique. To achieve this I was planning on changing the seeded organisms somewhat, removing all forms of plants from the equation. I was thinking of making life crawl from the water much in the way it did on our planet, as diversity and risky bauplans seem to radiate more there. My current thinking was a tiny species of crab, or any other crustacean, that feeds predominantly on plankton, or that can easily prey upon the introduced polychaetes. Then I'd have additional barnacles and phytoplankton. The idea would be that an entirely new group of photosynthesisers would arise from my sessile introduced fauna.

2. The entire format of the project would be more in line with the formatting of the Whitty Isle, though still with rants and with the possible addition of 'research segments' that were found in the original iteration of Karkinos.

2. I also have plans to explore upon Karkinos lore in more detail, possibly try and attempt what much of us dream of and do a speculative novel based on the experiences of new researchers arriving on the planet. Would there be any interest in this?

3. Art is gonna be a massively desired medium for the 'New' Karkinos, and though I am willing to pay for some particularly large or complicated pieces I don't have the money to do this entirely. As previously mentioned I have friends here willing to lend a hand, but any interest from some more arty people would be neato.
Projects Currently Being Worked Upon:

Karkinos: Where faith meets myth on a world of the strangely familiar.
Under New Suns: The forums own colonisation race! Steep yourself in my lore....

Projects in suspension (for when inspiration hits):

- Galapagaia
- Rich Man's Ark (nice little bit of community spec :P)
- Ichor

something like a type of fish that can project its jaw out, like a goblin shark, being thrown into a terraformed world and developing a kind of animal that has two "heads" one consisting of the mouth and the other with the other senses. would have aquatic forms like fish, and later terrestrial animals, like some animal of snaiad

A alternate universe project about life under a giant bed, with all non-living things scaled up appropriatley. It would start in the Mundtersus era, where everything is clean and there is nothing but a few bug sized creatures, and as time passes more things are shoved under the bed, forcing life to adapt to the changing, and possibly toxic, environment.

A future evolution project with a backstory similar to Horizon: Zero Dawn, where killer robots gone wrong destroy all life on Earth. An automated terraforming system manages to restore microbes and a rather interesting collection of organisms, but fails to restore humans and most vertebrates.

Yes, it would basically use Faro robots as Alien Space Bats.

An earth-like planet where animals that inhabited it convergently evolved to look like the prehistoric animals of earth with each landmass focusing on a different time period with a huge twist. Instead of looking like accurate, they are mostly inspired by outdated paleo art.

I would think a project with descendents of outdated paleoart dinosaurs would be more interesting, as otherwise its basically just showing off old paleoart with new descriptions. Otherwise it seems like a neat idea.

Perhaps maybe I could do that as of course, just directly showing them off as my project is lazy xp.

Edit: Changed the wording

I just had a brain storm now and I thought of something like this: a small planet where the only big terrestrial animals are something like gastropods (I think there is something like that, like a comic book), but we would have many different forms of slugs, like sessile animals and big slugs that reproduce like flowers, and big things - "monopods" - that jump or something, not counting snails like fish

I also thought of a terraformed world, with a great part covered with oceans, where the only group of animals placed are cetaceans and their food (planktom and things that whales eat). after a long time the whales (mammals) evolve into groups that completely lose their mammalian characteristics, turning into a new group of vertebrates, like fish.
it is clear that some forms of zooplanktom such as copepodose and krill also evolve broadly.
probably the plants are relatives of species that evolved from terrestrial plants that were also placed there, or some kind of terrestrial evolution of algae (red? brown?I do not know much about algae :V )

Are you plausible?

I've had this notion in the back of my head of a natural history museum dedicated to fossils discovered on Mars. Unfortunately, geological timescales and likely evolutionary rates being what they are, macrobiota from that planet are highly unlikely... :(
Take a look at my exobiology subforum of the planet Nereus!

I plan something similar to this for my Xenosphere, where time travel is used to recover lifeforms from 3.7 billion years ago.

that something like "the future is wild" garden worm-a Polychaete that makes symbiosis with algae and turns into something like a plinth- which has evolved into large sessile forms, such as trees, reproducing asexually (or as flowers)

these things could have different degrees of sessility, varying from normal garden worms that take photosynthesis sometimes, but also can eat food, when large trees that are "fed" solely by photosynthesis can be totally immovable, or present some type of locomotion

I'm not using this, but a planet full of nothing but posthumans inspired by fetishes. There would be animalistic humans (furries), humans with snake-like jaws and extendable stomachs, and herbivores with large feet.
Projects I'm probably going to do:

Evolutionary continuum:
Currently unnamed project- takes place 250 million years after the extinction of man
Alternative Evolution:
The Sanctuary- The best zoo in the world
The Habitable Zone:
Sapients of the universe- exactly what it sounds like
Alternate universes:
A bestiary of the land of Hyrule- again, exactly what it sounds like
Ixuligaxa- A Sheatheria-esque project but the wildlife came from the orvadacian and earlier.
Café Cosmique:
Ultimate power- A gritty reboot of Power rangers, but not too gritty, some xenobiology and posthumans
The menagerie- A world where a team is formed to combat the increase of crimes by Folklorish and Mythological creatures
To Sum It Up- a bestseller in the sanctuary universe, It focuses on Rises and Falls, Trials of the century, and the worst of the worst
