Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I for once would be able to participate pretty regularly, but I'd need to get a new mic, unless I wanna sound like I'm in Chernobyl.
Full on nuclear radiation, millions are dead.

You know the podcast seems like a good idea, but I'm not sure that we could pull it off well. Please do continue discussing it, but also consider an idea I had the other day at work: an SE e-zine. Our community is full of visual artists and I think it would be much easier to put together and have higher quality than any podcast we could come up with. Since it's a digital magazine there would be no equipment required beyond the software many of us already have, and it would be easier to distribute quickly and would likely attract more attention to speculative biology than a niche podcast (running the SE tumblr has taught me that people who aren't that into biology still like pictures of cool, speculative animals). We would be able to feature projects, conduct interviews easily, and maybe even make a little money for the forum by selling some adspace.
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

Great idea! As much as I might support a podcast, I know it's a pipe dream, just looking at our history with such projects - the SE film, even the DnD game that never made it off the ground. One thing we have succeeded with are community projects and contests, something that requires no special equipment and doesn't lay the burden on a small number of people. Furthermore, a zine doesn't require a bunch of people to be present at the same time.

For something like that, get Sheather involved. All of his art is pretty damn good.

I said e-zine. Electronic magazine. There is no way we can afford to print physical copies. Trust me, I work at a print shop and that shit is expensive. Besides, why would you want to spend money making physical copies when you could make a digital copy for free, distribute as many of them as you want across the entire planet instantly, and possibly even make a profit without having to spend any revenue on production costs?

The SE tumblr has nearly 2000 followers, many of whom are other science blogs that would gladly plug the e-zine!

An e-magazine might be better than a podcast. It would definitely allow a lot more interaction and involvement from the SE community. Seeing as we've got people here who do scientific writing for a profession/hobby/university course, it would also be a good place to get a good group of people for reviewing work/promoting work to.
