As Bob suggested, here is a thread where we can discuss the possibility of and format of a speculative evolution podcast.
First things that probably need sorting are who will host it, how will it be recorded, and how/where will it be uploaded.

I've never spoken on a podcast before, but I'm open to it. I'd like to give it a try as a guest speaker before committing to anything, though.

I would be up for helping in some way. Maybe speaking...maybe not. I don't have anything to offer in the tech department though Breaking it up into segments is probably best for example to start off maybe mention any relevent happenings, then the body of the podcast could be discussion of something especially interesting, a specific aspect of se, or an interview or conversation with someone. Then some sort of conclusion/roundup. Also they should probably be planned out at least one preferably 2-3 weeks in advance to avoid floundering and overly long breaks between them. Something like that should avoid it becoming a documented version of the Skype voicechat ;- p

Me Forum user Uncanny Gemstar drew what is supposed to be a me. Thanks! Spoiler: click to toggle As they walk in, they're greeted by a small, poorly kept pathway leading to a poorly constructed Japanese-style gate. Behind this, a small field made up of corn, rice, wheat, potatoes, among other plants is contrasted by large piles of books, as well as a few rather out of place looking laptops. Off in the corner, a small woman, with long, striped, and strikingly colorful socks, no shoes, unremarkable denim shorts, a large, fancy black coat, arm warmers, glasses, a tuque, and somewhat unkempt, mid-length blue-and-pink-streaked red hair, is rummaging through a trash bin, located behind a sign saying "employees only". She continues this for a while (walking behind a wall to change her outfit now and then), until one of her visitors coughs. Startled, she looks up, apologizes, and grabs a handful of textbooks and novels before daintily running off to join them. What, you want me to tell you what these mean? But Souls are delicious. They're like bacon - they taste good on anything. But if you eat them, you completely remove them from existence! They can't move on or... or be reincarnated! Huh. I never really gave it much thought. Besides, what do you mean by reincarnation anyway? You know, being reborn as someone or something else. Which means different body, different memories, different experiences, yes? So isn't being reborn as "something else" the same as being "removed from existence"? I... I... eating souls isn't right! That depends on your definition of "right". All living things survive by eating other living things. So what? You're a god. You should be above all that! Gods are above living things, which doesn't necessarily mean we care about them.

Projects and concepts that I have stewing around Extended Pleistocene- An alternate future where man died out, and the megafauna would continue to thrive (may or may not include a bit about certain future sapients) Inverted World- An alternate timeline where an asteroid hit during the Barremian, causing an extinction event before the Maastrichtian. Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and notosuchians make it to the present, along with a host of other animals. Badania- Alien planet that has life at a devonian stage of development, except it exists in the present day. Ido- Alien world where hoppers (derived flightless ballonts) and mouthpart-legged beasts are prevalent. Leto- Life on a moon orbiting a gas giant with an erratic orbit; experiences extremes of hot and cold. The Park- ??? Deeper Impact- a world where the K-Pg extinction wipes out crocodilians, mammals, and birds; squamates, choristoderes, and turtles inherit the earth. World of Equal Opportunity- alternate history where denisovans come across Beringia and interact with native fauna. Much of the Pleistocene fauna survives, and the modern humans that end up crossing into North America do not overhunt the existing animals. 10,000 years later, civilizations exist that are on par with European and Asian societies. The Ditch- Nothing is what if seems..

Okay, if you guys are serious about starting a podcast then we need to do some serious planning. First of all, set aside the discussion about who will speak on it. That is literally the last thing we need to discuss, there are a whole gaggle of other things we need to figure out first:
- What exactly will this podcast be about? Obviously speculative biology will be the main focus but we'll run out of things to talk about very quickly if we don't get a broader range of topics and tie spec into those rather than doing it the other way around.
- How long is it going to be and how often will we release an episode? Most podcasts are anywhere from 20-45 minutes and are released on a weekly basis. Given our track record with this kind of thing I would advise erring on the side of caution and doing a, say, 25 minute podcast every two weeks and gradually increasing the length of the episodes if/as popularity of the podcast increases.
- How are we going to distribute and advertise this podcast? There's no point in even making one if we're just going to circulate it among ourselves.
- How are we even going to make a podcast? We would need at least two hosts (if not more) and decent recording/editing equipment and software.
- And finally, who would host it and be the literal and figurative voice of SE?

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.
"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

Well I guess many of those questions tie into who would be doing this.
I also think we could advertise this on any blogs with a spec-bio theme and we could produce a YouTube add and advertise on tumblr and stuff (there are probably a bunch of blogs that would advertise this stuff).

There are the old SE favourites to discuss and review - Dixon's stuff, and Expedition. I think it was Lamna who suggested going over The New Dinosaurs and looking at what turned out to be close to the truth. Things like that. Also, other films and books - IMO there's always some fun to be had looking at the plausibility of movie creatures/trying to make movie creatures plausible. And don't forget cryptozoology! This kind of stuff also appeals to a lot of people who aren't quite as nerdily into SE as us so it would hopefully broaden the potential audience Then of course there is general world-building and creature creation related stuff, general science news that could be tied in as it arises. Plus short chats with a featured artist/writer/person with excellent and interesting projects every so often. That's plenty for a good number of podcasts.

Who has a good radio voice and would be able to dedicate some time to do this on a regular/semi-regular basis? Preparing one or two in advance to create a buffer will ease the host availability issue but we still need people who will be able to set aside a couple of hours every month or so to prepare some material, coordinate with other participants and record.

I would look into the podcasts of Dan Benson for inspiration. He focuses on writing and holds discussions with sci fi and fantasy writers, but we could do something similar with our members. Another segment could be devoted to current events surrounding biology, astrobiology, and paleontology.

What Monster said. If this gets off the ground, I will post a journal to deviantart for each episode, and I imagine others might do the same on theirs. As long as this doesn't become a circlejerk of blathering about our own projects or going round and round about the plausibility of quadrupedal birds, people will be interested.

Shorter podcasts are doable. Writingexcuses, for example, produces concise 15-minute long podcasts.
Advertising can be spread on social media and DeviantART. I'm pretty certain that we can get some attention if needed, based on our combined social circles, forums we interact with, and blood rituals we are willing to make.
As far as the voice goes, I think it would be good if we got people to do some sort of 'audition': create three spec-related topics, randomly select one, and have the auditionee talk about that topic for a certain period of time.

If I was older I might be able to, but as of now I'd not be part of this. Yea I'm not sure if any of the younger members of Spec should do this (including me)

“The search for truth takes us to dangerous places,” said Old Woman Josie. “Often it takes us to that most dangerous place: the library. You know who said that? No? George Washington did. Minutes before librarians ate him.” ― Joseph Fink, Welcome to Night Vale “Librarians are hideous creatures of unimaginable power. And even if you could imagine their power, it would be illegal. It is absolutely illegal to even try to picture what such a being would be like.” ― Joseph Fink, Welcome to Night Vale "Blep" ― Diglett, My Blue Tonge

My suggestion is that topics ought to often be single "what-if" or "how would this work" ideas, and build upon that during an episode as a general underlying structure, informational ideas. Much like what the General Spec board is supposed to act like.
Focusing on actual projects [Expedition, Dixon stuff, or even Silvanus] is good and can be done many times.. But doesn't seem like the best choice of an underlying premise for the series.
