| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Henry you dick! Mr. Hands "Am I boring? Depends, do you like watching documentaries about 19th and 18th century warfare, having complicated feelings about bismark and crying over the film of winston churchill putting flowers on FDR's grave. If so then I'm so fucking boring. " | |

There was a big riot where S.Korean police tear-gased and water-sprayed the protesters. Don't know about all of that democracy ending stuff though.

The BBC article is pretty mild. Large numbers of left-ish protesters are unhappy with a conservative attempt to break through the police to get to the presidency (the Blue House?), the police stop them. Maybe I'm missing something, but that's hardly the end of democracy. That kind of thing isn't that rare in the global scheme of things. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-34820596 In other, more obvious news, Aung San Suu Kyi looks set to be Myanmar*'s Shogun, she has two British sons and so is ineligible for the Presidency, but she's going to be running the show so long as the military don't try anything. Lets hope nothing goes wrong and that Myanmar can not only have a democratic election, but establish a true democratic system where the choose isn't just between democracy and an alternative, but actual political parties. And that the new government will be able to make peace with and include minorities and especially, protect the Rohingya. *I'm going to miss Burma, Rangoon, etc, but now the nation is on the road to democracy and it's clear that Myanmar, Yangon are the names the people want, I'll start using them. |

That's about what I expected. A protest happens and attempts to do something the government does not want them to do. The police stop them (perhaps going too far or using unpleasant tactics) and the protesters and their supporters act like this is the end of democracy. It sounds nasty, it sounds like perhaps mistakes were made. It doesn't sound like death of liberty. In good news concerning ISIS, Sinjar has been retaken by the Peshmerga and it looks promising that Ramadi will be in Iraqi hands by the end of the year. In general the situation in Iraqi is looking pretty good. I don't want to be too optimistic but Mosul might be liberated by next spring. |

The news about Myanmar is wonderful, especially with Aung San Suu Kyi finally with some power. Now all we have to do is hope that no mysterious weapons funding appears in the hands of military opposition.... |

"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!" | |

I don't know much about more recent happenings but at the time of the 8888 uprising, the majority of arms supplying the regime where coming from British weapons companies, and several western companies made (make?) profits off the slave labour that was (is?) common in Myanmar. |

I don't know the specifics, but I assume that was just business. British companies selling arms to internationally recognised (yet not particularly nice) nations isn't due to the British government being pro-dictatorship, but because there are only so many nations with both the will and money for large military contracts, so you can't afford to be picky. These days the west don't really sell arms to Myanmar, China's their main supplier. |

In good news, it looks like ISIS are on the decline in Syria and Iraq, from the YPG, Peshmerga and SDF mainly. Doesn't mean the clusterfuck is going to end any time soon though. In more depressing news, Al Nusra expressed support for the Paris Attacks, despite still having a hostile relationship with ISIS. Moderate Islamists indeed. |

I knew the news was fairly good from Iraqi, but I didn't know about Syria. Are the SDF and YPG going for Al-Raqqah or trying to link up with the Western Kurds and rebels? |
