Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Computer games are getting more and more amazing by the day. You see, apparently everything in this one is procedurally generated, but what is of interest to us - the various lifeforms - they seem pretty one and the same to me. They're either contemporary animals or dinosaurs, with tiny adjustments. There are also the occasional sandworms and flying worms. All in all, there don't seem to be that many species on all planets taken together, but this may be due to the limited number we get to see in the trailers.
One big plus is that far from all vegetation is green. There are planets with red only vegetation and pale-blue only vegetation.

I like the concept of the game, but I find the current designs for the lifeforms to be very...Earth-like. For a game that has a strong focus on seeing new things, giant rhinos and dinosaurs aren't going to be enough to blow my mind. Then again, the game may focus more on alternative fields of space exploration... I guess we'll see if/when it's released.

Eighteen quintillion, four hundred forty-six quadrillion, seven hundred forty-four trillion, seventy-three billion, seven hundred and nine million, five hundred fifty-one thousand, six hundred sixteen
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

That's a lot of illions. I'm gonna assume the planets are procedurally generated.

They would have to be. There's no way a human being could do that much coding and models in a single lifetime.

I wonder if they'll try to procedurally generate the life forms as well, or they'll stick to a limited set of pre-made models, in which case they lose me.

I'm seen a lot on Earth convergances, if they do I won't be surprised if it was more Sci-Fi instead of Factual Science Fiction.

RE: the procedural generation.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Well that is one of the downsides of procedural generation. While it can generate vastly more content than manually creating stuff ever could, it can not put any real imagination into it. For the lifeforms of No Man's Sky, the game designers apparently made various templates and then the procedural generation will create alterations on these templates, thus producing an enormous variety of life forms from each template. So you will see variation in all the life forms and will probably never find identical lifeforms on different worlds, but you would still find many similar ones.
Of course, one could perhaps argue that the game designers could have come up with more imaginative templates than deer-like, sauropod-like, shark-like, etc.

The video mentioned that they kept the lifeforms in the trailers fairly Earth-like so people could identify them easily; there's going to be more variety in the actual game, and they apparently get more exotic as you get closer to the center of the galaxy.
