| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. This is the place where I'll post my non-spec art, comics and more. Spoiler: click to toggle A young male gorgosaurus libratus, looking for food in the Canadian fern prairie of the late Cretaceous 75 mya. Projects and concepts that I have stewing around Extended Pleistocene- An alternate future where man died out, and the megafauna would continue to thrive (may or may not include a bit about certain future sapients) Inverted World- An alternate timeline where an asteroid hit during the Barremian, causing an extinction event before the Maastrichtian. Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and notosuchians make it to the present, along with a host of other animals. Badania- Alien planet that has life at a devonian stage of development, except it exists in the present day. Ido- Alien world where hoppers (derived flightless ballonts) and mouthpart-legged beasts are prevalent. Leto- Life on a moon orbiting a gas giant with an erratic orbit; experiences extremes of hot and cold. The Park- ??? Deeper Impact- a world where the K-Pg extinction wipes out crocodilians, mammals, and birds; squamates, choristoderes, and turtles inherit the earth. World of Equal Opportunity- alternate history where denisovans come across Beringia and interact with native fauna. Much of the Pleistocene fauna survives, and the modern humans that end up crossing into North America do not overhunt the existing animals. 10,000 years later, civilizations exist that are on par with European and Asian societies. The Ditch- Nothing is what if seems.. | |

I decided to post some spec art too here, cause I'll be doing something, which isn't project material, but I still want to feature it here. Expect aliens, posthumans, future/alien technology and cloned stuff, plus the usual paleoart.![]() The horned hexahog and a white nomad, two creatures from the plains of Aurea, a large planet 5% larger than Earth and 50% water, filled with deserts and plains, with a few forest-like environments in the coastal areas and islands. |

![]() The Fprhnnnqu or balloon people, as they were called before we learned their language are a race of sophont aliens from Qnahoo, a Venus-sized planet with a dense atmosphere, which allows aeroplankton and balloon creatures to live there. They were the first encountered alien sophonts (the star thing is an under the creature view of their tentacle/hand, inside of which is located a spider-like mouth). More info coming soon. |

Titanis didn't have wing claws. This has been kown for quite a while now. Also it co-existed with carnivoran mammals, as did a few later phorhusrhacids, so competition wasn't a problem. |

Titanis is known from only a few fossils and the skeleton is really, really incomplete, so most of its' appearance is based on its' relatives, plus the fact that we know it was robuster. Also, extinction from competition is the most common theory for the extinction of terror birds. Sure the ice age had started, but judging from its' location and the fact that it was enough adapted as to survive the cold, the climate change wouldn't be that big of a deal to it. |

True, but there isn't a lot to suggest that it in particular redeveloped wing claws, since seriemas and their relatives (falcons, parrots, passerines) are notorious for their loss of wing claws amidst birds, and the hand morphology in these forms if anything further cements this. Not really. The last time a peer-reviewed source posited that seriously was in the 90's. There's no reason to assume terror birds declined due to mammalian competion: not only did they co-exist with sparassodonts through most of the Cenozoic, but Titanis co-existed with a very modern carnivoran fauna (wolves, felines, bears, et cetera) for at least +3 million years, while latter terror birds did so for longer. It makes no sense to assume competition was the result of their extinction, especially given a myrad of other factors that also caused the extinction of ungulates and other animals in the Plio-Pleistocene. |

Well Phorusrhacos is known to have had them and while many birds don't have visible hand claws, many have hand claws covered by feathers, such as several galloanserans, birds of prey and I think all living ratites (kiwis have the biggest ones in relation to body size).
I think we both know how well sparassodonts themselves took the interchange as did many other native South American groups. Also, extinction doesn't have to happen in a few centuries, it could take longer. And btw, Titanis is the last known genus of terror birds. In other news: ![]() As I've said earlier, I've been working on a speculative encyclopedia of alien sophonts, non-sapient aliens, futuristic technology and posthumans. The Aureans and Europan wildlife that I've posted before are indeed part of it and so are the Frhnnnqu, now to be joined by another race, which you might be seeing more often in the future. These are the Chronoans (well a sketchy drawing of them), some of the most powerful living races, they've existed for 108 million years and have visited Earth several times, first discovering it roughly 241,000 years after developing a modern society. More info will come later, with other new drawings. |

Source plz. Only Titanis was ever argued to have wing claws.
![]() Where do I even begin? - Sparassodonts are well known by now to NOT have perished due to competition. The last known sparassodonts are middle Pliocene, the first non-procyonid or dog carnivorans in South America come from the middle Pleistocene, and in between large didelphids are known. There's literally no way in hell carnivorans outcompeted sparassodonts. - Even ignoring the late Pleistocene possible phorusrhacids from Uruguay, Mesembriornis and some other taxa have outlived Titanis slightly. - Competion doesn't spontaneously happen out of the blue. Let alone in an species occuring over a period of several million years with the exact same competitors. Edited by Carlos, Mar 2 2015, 05:01 PM.
