| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. For me Life is the joy of initiating Third Impact and losing myself as I merge with Lilith and the entirety of humanity. Shame Asuka won't be there. |

"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!" | |

Life. Life is a tricky thing, asked for by no-one and no-thing... it may derive from the most perfect and well-planned arrangements or may be the side-effect of a few seconds of lust... if you are a tree, you may owe your entire existence to a breeze, or the butt hair of a hungry fly. It is a most incredibly, almost unimaginably unlikely event to have ever forged into existence at all, life - even more so that you yourself, out of all matter and ideas and possibilities in existence, were fortunate (?) enough to become part of it. Sometimes it is horrid; sometimes it is pleasant; mostly, we take it for granted, though really it's quite an interesting thing. "The purpose of life is to breed". But what does breeding do in the end? It's only prolonging the inevitable. Reproduction does not help the cosmos in the end. It is a selfish and, fundamentally, so far as the entirety of existence cares, completely pointless affair... and yet it exists. Some say this is proof of a higher power. I say it's just an interesting event which happened through chaos, like the occasional Snoopy-shaped potato chip or a goat born with a spot on its butt shaped like Abraham Lincoln. If you had never experienced life, you would not miss it. When you are dead, you probably won't remember it either. In the end your existence meant nothing. Everything will end eventually; life only has a point because we give it one - and give it one we should. Life does not matter to the cosmos - but you are not the cosmos. It does matter now. Temporary or not, it is a remarkable thing in its own right, and it can be a beautiful and incredible thing. Whether or not I wanted it, I try to make mine worth something. To make the world a better place in some way before I leave it. I won't leave a big mark. It won't be something you'll read about in centuries, decades, or probably even days after my death, and it's certainly nothing that will remain to be seen in the very end - but it still has a purpose, if only for now, if only a small one. If I can make happiness out of sorrow, beauty out of ugly, love out of hate, I've done something. And that is enough. Life is laughter. Life is imagination. Life is cockatiel kisses on a sunny morning and blubbering tears at a movie theater. Life is what it is - and you can make of it what you like, beause like it or not, you've been granted one - it is yours to do with what you like. Is it a gift? Is it a curse? It can be either. It's just life. Try to be nice and not make it worse than it's sometimes going to be regardless. Do what you love, love who you love, don't be an ass and try every day to something good for the world, because we can only have it for so long before we lose it - and one day far after still, when entropy one day cuts the cord on it all and calls the final 'lights out' on the very long experiment of probability that was existence. |

I want to say something, and I'm drunk and high enough to think it's a good idea to do so. I don't see why so many people take issue with the idea that life is meaningless. I mean does life even exist? Can you, or I for that matter, even prove that we really exist right now? Descartes said "I think therefore I am," but is that really proof of anything? Can you really prove you're thinking? That you've ever thought? That you will think? How do you know you're not a figment of another person's imagination? Or that you're even alive? Nobody is really quite sure what happens to the brain as a person dies. How do you know everything you're experiencing right now is really happening and isn't part of some endless cycle occurring in the instance a brain is dying? How do you know that you're not just a single part of an infinite number of possible lifetimes playing out in the final seconds of a dying brain? Or a living one, for that matter? Do you know that you're real? Can you prove that you're real? Wouldn't that require you to prove that everything else, including the rest of us, are real as well? How can you ever know if any of your memories are even true? All you can know for certain is what you're thinking and how you feel right at this instant, but once it's in the past it can't really ever be proven to have occurred... |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

That's the ultimate question, isn't it? Does it matter? If I'm not real then why should I try so hard? I mean it doesn't matter if I don't exist, now does it? |

I'm pretty sure he was asking "Does it really matter if we're real or not?" in a rhetorical manner. I have a rather different take on it, omnicide/fart jokes aside. I think the only meaning life has is whatever meaning humans give to it. Personally I don't bother with the why, I just go with the flow and live life as it comes, baby. |

Seriously, I'm with Sheather and Kamineigh. Life doesn't have to be this big routine of stumbling around and muttering to oneself "Who am I? Why am I here? Am I even real?" like a drunk person who forgot where the light-switch is. I mean, it can be, I guess. That's up to you. Personally, I ain't about that. Life is life, and as we are the ones who are alive, we each individually get to choose what that means. Life can be questioning reality or existence constantly. Life can be excessive fart jokes. It's what you make of it. For me, life is that big-ish thing we do before we die. And since nobody really knows for certain what happens after the dying bit, we might as well make sure the living bit has some good stuff in it, or at the very least, memorable stuff, just in case memory is still a thing after death. |

Life is service to the greater good. If you exist, you are obligated to make the world a better place. If you do not, you're scum unworthy of existence. |
