| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! As Troodon said, imo, the only actual bad words are slurs. Slurs differ from swear words in that while swear words are usually descriptive words or things to say when you're upset or frustrated (like "shit" or "fuck"), slurs are words that are specifically designed to be harmful to a group of people (the other f word and the n word being examples). Swear words are fine in my book. Slurs are not. |

They're censored on television just like why genetalia and breasts are censored, because parents get offended. And we know that that "private parts" aren't bad at all. |

If I sound rude while critiquing, I apologize in hindsight! "To those like the misguided; look at the story of Man, and come to your senses! It is not the destination, but the trip that matters. It depends on what television you are watching. In the United States the stories and information put on display is typically observed, processed, and regulated by a government organization. If the braodcaster does not follow their rules they can be fined heavily. The various words that are censored tend to follow the three categories I already gave. A good example, which is used often from what I can tell, is that you can say "pussy" in reference to a cat without censorship but if you say "pussy" in reference to genitalia you will be fined. This is because the word falls under the culturally undesirable idea. Genitalia having been considered something to keep hidden and stay "hush-hush" about whenever that particular regulation was put in place. We switched topic when you began discussion of what qualifies as a bad word. Edited by colddigger, Nov 23 2014, 11:59 PM.

It's not really that confusing when you remember that the world isn't black and white morally, and that just because society says something is "bad" doesn't necessarily mean it is. Words can only be bad if they're being used with the express purpose of being harmful. Hence, swear words aren't "bad" words because they're usually harmless, whilst slurs are bad because they are harmful and often perpetuate harmful ideas. |

@Zorcuspine, I know it's depressing to think that escaping is the only option I have right, but it sure is the easiest one. Facing problems has never been my speciality, because it doesn't matter how Much I like things I do this moment, there'll always be times when I'm bored and I start to think about the stuff what happens around. Avoiding/ignoring isn't my thing because we have tests on school which make you look at the problems in the world and know what's happening. |

Depends, are they gonna get slapped in the mouth if they do? What is okay and not okay for a child to do is up to their guardian within reason. Often language selection such as that is done to instill a form of behavioral respect in a young person. |

Life to me is probably the most beautiful and most complex pieces of chaos i have ever seen, and can never even hope to imagine anything more spectacular than it. Despite its wonders and beauty, it seems that most of the populace does not care or is literally blind to it, I often wish that i could live in a world uncorrupted, one where everyone understands the majesty of the world, one where the World has become paradise thanks to the fact that everyone actually decided to give a damn.

Profanity is an ancient pre-third millenium hangover... it's a concept... Western society was way less prudish in Shakespeare's day, and right up to Victorian times... The whole concept of "profanity" is wrapped up in Judeo-Christian mythology... As for how f--ked up the world is? I made the mistake a few weeks ago of reading Noam Chomsky's "How The World Works" - it was eye opening and VERY depressing! Couldn't sleep for days and was raging inside at how f--ked up the world is, all for the benefit of a few people... It's quite depressing to have been hopeful and optimistic that a better world awaited, when I was in my 20s... 30+ years later and things are probably worse, there was something to be said for the stalemate of the Cold War... kept the nutters in check. But ya gotta move on and live and earn a crust, so life goes on! Edited by Zoroaster, Nov 24 2014, 02:23 AM.

Agreed. But it's not just different words, it can be the same word used in a different context or definition. For example, "shit" as in "shit that hurt" is just a curse. "shit" as in "you smell like shit" is a slur. |

I rather doubt that myself, in the past English swearing was more sacrilegious than modern sexual/scatological swearing. Gods Hooks! (minced into gadzooks) God's Wounds! (minced into zounds). Anyway, the only thing that truly prevents my reaching inner peace is the eternal conflict over naming. I had when someone stupidly misspells something to make it "cool" like tumblr or hudl, but I also hate when something has the exact same name as what I want to learn about, like the band Mastodon or Jaguar cars. The struggle never ends. |
