| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! A group of temnospondyls which live in symbiosis with algae, with both fully aquatic and terrestrialized forms. The algae has evolved to have a plant-like appearance and supplies some energy derived from photosynthesis to the amphibian symbiote, though this cannot supply all of their energy needs, which are mostly supplied by vertebrate prey which they ambush using camouflage. The largest terrestrial forms are almost sessile as adults and give live birth to relatively normal lizard-like offspring (of which there are a couple of neotenic forms). To cope with the cold winter temperatures of the island they are endemic to, they are tolerant of frosts and some species even have antifreeze proteins in their blood. EDIT: And some species leave waste and bits of prey on the ground that fertilize soil, meaning true plants can grow around and even on them. One sex is probably fully motile. EDIT 2: Or the giant tree-like species could mate similarly to anglerfish. Males are smaller and caecilian or snake-like, and attach themselves to the female, eventually becoming part of her body. Yeah but they're completely different species that are totally unrelated to each other, despite them living on different planets that are probably far away from each other. |

Planet Hominiad After establishing an colony on the Earth-like planet Hominiad, newly-created creatures have been genetically engineered from one of mankind's future descendants. Planet Hominiad was an paraside planet full of many natural habitats with very few native animals but that was before one of 100 spaceships, complete with a extra-uterine laboratory inside the gigantic spaceship where the "alien" colonists and genetic engineers create and develop new human beings that are most likely capable of breathing and living in the somewhat artificial biosphere of the planet. Planet Hominiad has five times the amount of Earth's gravity and also 3 times larger than the Earth itself. 1. A genetically-modified posthuman whose streamlined body and strong front limbs enable it to burrow through the "sea floor" of estuaries. It could crush hard-shelled "mollusks" thanks to a heavy lower jaw and strong teeth. 2. A genetically-modified posthuman with an unusually long muzzle and tongue which helps it consume about as many colonial "insects" in a day. When this behavior was first observed, some could say it was like the now-extinct Giant Anteater of Earth. 3. A genetically-modified posthuman whose limbs have atrophied entirely and independently developed a body shape similar to snakes from bygone Earth. No human could have recognized this creature as his or her descendant, despite that they looked nothing at all like more human ancestors. 4. A genetically-modified posthuman that is commonly called a "nuisance" because they eat absolutely everything in their way. Its body was re-oriented in an horizontal, almost dinosaurian posture. 5. A genetically-modified posthuman that is a extremely dangerous parasite to the other human-derived species mentioned above. It was even observed sucking out the blood of large "fish"-like creatures originally native to the planet. |

Why would it make custard from it's own eggs? wouldn't there be moral issues surrounding eating your own young? |

Well, you can't apply human morals to another sapient. There might well not be an ethical issue to them. Some bird species allow/encourage infanticide between their chicks (for example), so there's certainly a possible precedent there. Additionally, if it's a bird who lays several eggs in a batch, population growth is going to become a big problem eventually. Disposing of eggs would be one way to deal with it. |

some alien design the big tentacle if for horizontal gene transfer that allows genetic diversity for their spore based asexal repdorcution, it has tentacles and a strong paddle spring back limb for locomotion, also a big extendable mouth that allows swallowing big stuff, head trunk differentiation is not as clear as in earth life but there is some cephalization is a benthic crreature -------------------------------------- btw I like that sophont idea |

A radial, arboreal organism covered in hard plates, like an echinoderm. It has a compound eye covering its main body, and the arms can rapidly change color. It uses this to communicate. Each of its six arms splits halfway into three arms. |

An alien sophont with extreme sexual dimorphism. The male is sessile and blind. He communicates with pheromones and loud, booming sounds. The female is larger and slug-like. She is covered in armored plates and uses a modified ''tongue'' as a manipulator. |

made this nameless creature sentient alien it is a pursuit predator it has 8 limbs with 4 being legs 2 being arms and 2 being half-wings these half-wings help steer the alien during hunts it breathes using 12 nostrils on the torso (with six being on each side) the eyes work similar to a peacock mantis shrimp now there are some things wrong with this creature for starters it should have teeth the hands should be slightly smaller it's body should be less blocky and finally it's eyes should be facing towards but i lack experience with sumo paint so here is an attempt at making art of this thing

A highly derived future parrot. Its upper jaw is either reduced or absent and its lower jaw is long and gutter-like. It feeds on blood. It sneaks up on large animals and applies a anesthetic in its saliva to the skin using its incredibly long tongue. Then it sticks its beak into the skin and rasps a hole using its tongue. It angles its beak so that the blood flows through it directly into its throat. I am probably going to use this idea for my future project. |

Projects I'm probably going to do: Evolutionary continuum: Currently unnamed project- takes place 250 million years after the extinction of man Alternative Evolution: The Sanctuary- The best zoo in the world The Habitable Zone: Sapients of the universe- exactly what it sounds like Alternate universes: A bestiary of the land of Hyrule- again, exactly what it sounds like Ixuligaxa- A Sheatheria-esque project but the wildlife came from the orvadacian and earlier. Café Cosmique: Ultimate power- A gritty reboot of Power rangers, but not too gritty, some xenobiology and posthumans The menagerie- A world where a team is formed to combat the increase of crimes by Folklorish and Mythological creatures To Sum It Up- a bestseller in the sanctuary universe, It focuses on Rises and Falls, Trials of the century, and the worst of the worst | |

A species of monkey which feeds on capsaicinoid-rich fruits and insects which also feed on them. The capsaicinoids are separated and absorbed into the interstitium, the dermis, and the bloodstream, so if the skin is pierced via teeth, the capsaicinoids will cause inflammation, allowing for the monkey to escape. Alternatively, you could just have the animal rub the fruits and insects into the hairs. |
