Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

It's a very undeveloped project, they're literally just species concepts. But:

1: I never thought up a complete list
2: Yes
3: It's an endless alternative universe that takes the form of never-ending caverns. That allows for more diversity in life.

A few months ago I tried out a little thought experiment, imagining if a variety of Earthly animals were transported to an endless cave system in an alternative universe, and left to evolve. I've never thought to post the concepts I came up with, but I kind of like them, even if they are rather underdeveloped, so here they are:

A omnivorous raccoon descendant which hunts by touch. It crawls through the endless darkness, feeling with its long, pale fingers across the masses of guano and fungi. It's extremely sensitive skin and palm-bristles allow it to locate its prey, then it quickly kills it before it can fight back. They are solitary, but when they come together to mate, they show a more social, tender side to their nature. Partners will stay together for several hours, caressing each other with their fingers and grooming each other, before finally separating.
To look at, these animals are repulsive in appearance. They are covered in a fine coating of pure white bristles, but their face is wrinkled and bare. Its eyes don't seem to exist anymore, covered in a pale webbing of skin. Their long arms end in their hands, the most grotesque of all, being completely hairless apart from 10 sensory bristles, and white, with long, twitching fingers.

With the roving, spider-like hands sliding across your home, tap-tapping, suddenly looking like your surroundings doesn't work anymore. In the darkness, you could be perfectly camouflaged or bright purple, and it wouldn't make a difference to a predator like this. You have to feel like your surroundings . . .
Some mice have developed an interesting form of camouflage in order to survive the ever-searching hands of the pale, blind raccoons. They allow various species of fungi to grow on their back, burying their mycelium into their matted fur and rough, carunculated skin. Stalks, branching and white, and cups, bristly and moist, cover their backs, all varieties of fungi which unwittingly save their hosts from detection. As the fingers come stroking and tapping, they will find only another clump of cave fungus, and continue on, thinking nothing of it . . .

The various bats that dwell in these caves have had millions of years to refine their echolocation to an extraordinary level. Over time, females have begun to favour males with certain textures. As such, sexual selection has bred a variety of bats, the males of which sport bizarre folds of skin, carrunculations, fleshy spines, erectable soft tissue, and flamboyant noses and ears. Of course the females would be completely blind down here whether they had eyes or not (and they don't), so they get a feel for their potential mate using echolocation and touch. They will approach each other, coming so close that their pale, eyeless faces are almost touching, and the female will explore every fold, every lump, every odd body ornament and texture, using both continuous clicking and actual contact. It's sort of like birds-of-paradise, but instead of being physically pleasing to the female, it is all about the texture.
That is a really cool idea. Like, really cool.

The Kumi lizard (Varanoscincus delcourti) is the most terrestrial and southernmost ranging of Cooklandian (Zealandia's) giant raptorial skinks, found from where Auckland would be in OTL to as far south as would-be Westland and North Canterbury. A massive, almost goanna-like lizard of up to 2 meters (6 feet long), though usually slightly smaller, it is often mistakenly called "Cook's goanna" by European colonists, despite being unrelated to varanids.

The coloration of Kumi is a varied black to dark brown base with various green or greenish-yellow flecks in southern regions and a prized glossy black base with yellow-orange stripes in the more northern regions of its range (the northern form was almost driven to extinction for the overseas pet trade and its skin, but has since been protected along with all other giant skinks). Northern Kumi individuals tend to be larger (5-6 feet long) and semi-arboreal, while smaller (4-5 feet) southern Kumi have some semi-aquatic tendencies, though still lower than other species of raptorial skink. Overall proportions are similar to the Australian Lace monitor (Varanus varius) but with the low stance and other defining features of a skink.

Like all giant skinks, Kumi are exclusively carnivorous and feed upon birds, introduced small and young mammals, smaller reptiles and large invertebrates as well as fish, and will readily scavenge on human remains. Although fatal attacks on humans have never been confirmed, there have been cases of lizards causing serious injuries to children and teenagers with their varanid-like teeth, usually when they have tried to play with or otherwise harass them, and also whipping them with their strong tails which do not detach, a feature they share with other raptorial skinks, but not other skink species (to this author's knowledge). This allows them to live in dense bush, but is a disadvantage in more open habitat, where giant predatory harriers can catch and eat them more easily.

Other notable features of the Kumi lizard's biology are its live birth method of reproduction (usually 1-2 young per year) and long lifespan of 40-50 years, the latter trait being similar to other giant skinks but short compared to some southern native geckos and sphenodonts. It was falsely believed by Maori to be poisonous to eat, which is believed to be the reason for its persistence into the present day, and now the Kumi can be seen both in the wild and in captivity (both publicly and privately, the only giant skink being found in private hands, only for experienced keepers).

EDIT: Adding another killer skink.

The carnivorous sea lizard (Taniwha ferox) is a semi-aquatic raptorial skink found on the northeast coast of Cooklandia (from where southern New Caledonia would be in OTL to where the Bay of Plenty would be), and is the largest as well as the most aggressive and dangerous of them all.

The "typical taniwha" (taniwha in this world is commonly used to refer to giant skinks but in its native use can refer to any large, dangerous reptile or fish), it is one of the largest lizards in the world and the world's largest skink, reaching lengths of up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) long and weighing up to 75 kg (143.3 lb), and when it comes to coloration having an iridescent grey-blue base coloration and gold spotted flecks, and a lighter underbelly to camouflage itself in the shallow warm-temperate to tropical coastal seas where it often hunts for sharks, stingrays, large fish and seabirds, as well as the occasional young dolphin. It can also hunt on the shore for seal pups and penguins, and is infamous for a select few but verified human deaths caused by attacks with its razor sharp, backwards pointing teeth and powerful tail. Four of the six verified fatal human attacks were on children under the age of 16, with one adult fatality being a 43-year-old woman who was skinny dipping at dusk in the waters of the Coromandel Peninsula in the darkening evening in summer 2016. The other adult fatality was of a 50-year-old bushman in 1847 in an estuary.

These attacks have been the source of much hatred and fear of this unique marine lizard, and from the 1800s to the 1960s many skinks were killed by rich hunters for their skulls and skins. Even though protection laws were enacted in 1969, there are still only around 180-200 individuals living today. As with all raptorial skinks, a carnivorous sea lizard can live for up to 5 years, and incidentally they have the largest litter size of any raptorial skink species, of up to six young either annually or biannually.

Some ideas of mine pertaining to alien life:

A shoaling fish-like creature that is in fact a colony of genetically-identical clones. The creature buds off more clones with which to surround itself and generally make the creature safer from predators. Its possible that these creatures are all tethered together with some sort of wire-like nervous system, with a central "brain" individual protected inside the shoal. The outside individuals would be in charge of food gathering and sensory information, and the front individuals would perhaps be stronger and larger, essentially pulling the colony along through the water. Some flashy, brightly-colored individuals would essentially detach from the colony and act as distractions for any predators. What makes this setup advantageous is that the whole shoal acts as one interconnected organism (which it technically is), allowing it to make more intelligent decisions. Not sure how this would though, but I think it's an interesting idea.

A flying creature (namely, a massive organism that mostly glides, expending little energy maintaining altitude) that can somehow store electricity in capacitor-like organs. It sources the electricity in the same way clouds generate charge, from friction in the air. The charge would take a while to accumulate, but the animal would have a lot of it. It uses this to superheat and ionize air entering a jet-like organ (basically jet propulsion but with electricity). The advantage to this is that the animal is not actually using its own energy to power its jet, sourcing it all from passive means. Perhaps it could use some kind an organic photoelectric system in its skin to aid in this, like the oriental hornet.

Lastly, a tree. A tree with mobile larvae that, instead of leaving the plant immediately after they are ready, stay with the parent plant for a little while. The larvae are given shelter amongst the leaves of the plant, in exchange for them bringing food to the semi-carnivorous tree. Perhaps they could be aerodynamic and arrow-like, waiting for prey to pass by before rocketing out of the tree and into the skin of their unsuspecting victim. The larvae feed, and the tree scavengers the leftovers with mobile roots.

Now I have sufficiently emptied my brain. I may incorporate some of these into my own project, and I particularly like the idea of the shoaling superorganism.

A while ago, I thought of a possible organism that would inhabit the moon. My idea was that, because of the very harsh conditions of the Moon, Lunar life would be relatively primitive to Terrestrial standards, perhaps no more advanced than the Ediacaran. The creature I had in mind was a small, vaguely crab-like, radially symmetrical creature that blends in with rocks. This nameless creature is no larger than a human fingernail, it would be mostly sessile, spending vast amounts of its life in one place.

These creatures would be photosynthetic, the sole "large" autotrophs of the Moon save for large mats of photosynthetic bacteria akin to stromatolites. They do not breathe, do not drink, and take all their energy from the lunar soil and the sun. Their bodies are covered in a thick horny carapace to protect themselves from the intense solar radiation. Tiny patches of photosynthetic cells line their carapace, allowing them to take in the remaining sunlight and convert it into all the vital necessities. They sport root-like limbs which burrow into the soil, collecting "organic" matter.

During the day, they lie almost motionless, looking to all the world like metallic pebbles. They are not completely sessile however, as their roots also allow them to slowly move to a place with more optimal sunlight if need be. As the Moon gets extremely hot in the daytime, their cells are specially adapted to this and are competely unlike anything found on Earth, able to withstand the scorching temperatures. Their carapace also is metallic-looking, as it is coated in a strange layer of minerals that help reflect sunlight. Come sunset, they begin to enter a state of torpor, shutting down nearly all bodily functions to help them survive the 14 and 1/2 days of cold and darkness, and remain motionless as their carapace thickens. As the sun rises once again, they essentially resurrect themselves, and move towards the morning light.

They produce waste in the form of a trickle of oxygen and shedding excess carapace which dissolves into the soil. They reproduce asexually, simply by "budding". Lacking any true predators, they can be found all across the surface of the Moon save for the poles. Due to the Moon's life-unfriendly conditions, these creatures may be at the limit of how advanced a Lunar organism can ever get. They are destined to remain in this evolutionary stalemate until something drives them extinct, forever oblivious of the successes of the organisms living just a few hundred thousand kilometres away...

---

I made this a few years ago. It's probably implausible in many ways, but I just thought I'd share it, as it was one of my first original species.

I was thinking of a post-Cretaceous dinosaur descendant today: A sort of highly specialized Maniraptoran Coelurosaur that lives in the Australasian Outback. It has spikes sticking out of its chest, behind its head, and on its back too. I liked the idea of having a highly-derived spiky maniraptor, but could also be interpreted as a highly-derived spiky pterosaur.

Veins: On some sort of dying world where it rains once in a century, the planet is dominated by salt pans, with the only non- hypersaline water existing in aquifers deep below the ground. These means that the majority of the planet's biodiversity exists in caversn and on the shores of the aquifers, highly divergent ecosystems (descended from what once lived on the planets surface when it was green) harbor a treasure trove of biodiversity.

On the surface, life is incredibly hardy, subsisting either on salty water or what little moisture exists. There does, however, exist one conduit for more water: Veins.

Veins are fleshy tubes that start at the bottom of an aquifer, burrowing through stone and sand until they reach the surface. Here, they act essentially as pumps, taking up water from the underground lakes, and giving them to any creatures that ask - literally. Creatures know that they simply have to tap on the lid of the Vein, and it'll belch up a quantity of water.

It's not without a catch, however: Veins need food, just like anything else. Make no mistake, they have a number of sources for food: at the lake bottoms, they filter feed, and catch "fish" with their tentacles. As they burrow through the stone, they subsist upon limited chemosynthesis. And once they break the surface, they take advantage of the hot blazing sun to conduct photosynthesis. But, about ten percent of the time when a creature comes to it thirsty, the Vein will instead of belching up water belch up acid, grab it with its tentacles, and throw it down its maw. It will fall all the way down to its base where it will be digested.

It's certainly a rough deal for the surface creatures, but they don't have much of a choice. Those individuals which attack the Vein usually end up dying from thirst a short time thereafter, making it a poor reproductive strategy. Indeed, some creatures have taken up a better relationship with the Veins, such as one species of termite which drops food into the Vein, and is not eaten by the Vein which knows them by their pheromones.

Veins are one of the most important species on the planet, providing both water for the surface and a key source of calories from the sun for the creatures of the aquifers who would otherwise be dependent purely upon chemosynthesis, and those creaatures which climb through the caverns all the way up to the surface.

Each individual is thousands of years old, and they reproduce by firing off spores from the surface. A polyp will take, photosynthesizing and generating acid to slowly dig down towards the aquifers.

Assuming this is a far-future earth, I think the Veins are some sort of a colonial mollusc.

Balloonxer - A tripedal species of alien standing around 3.21 meters high and 5.76 meters long, native to a planet the size of earth but with more mass. The alien has large sphincters on its back which connect via long tubes to seven pairs of bladders within its body that help to reduce the weight of the animal. However, the seventh and last pair are not located with the animal's torso but at the end of the alien's forearms, covered in a layer of skin. These bladders can swell to well over a meter wide in diameter, while the walls of the bladder shrink to just over two centimetres; this happens when the balloonxer breathes in through the sphincters and directing large amounts of air to them. The air in the bladder becomes highly pressurised in the bladder, resulting in a rather hard surface to them. Balloonxers exploit this by using them as weapons: a direct blow from the balloonxer's hand bladders can cause internal rupturing, cracking, or even scalping.

The Planet Aether: After establishing an colony on the earth-like planet Aether, newly-created creatures have been genetically engineered from one of mankind's future descendants. Planet Aether was an completely barren and empty planet full of savannas and deserts with no native animals but that was before one of 100 spaceships, complete with a extra-uterine laboratory inside the gigantic spaceship where the "alien" colonists and genetic engineers create and develop new human beings that are most likely capable of breathing and living in the artificial atmosphere and biosphere of the planet. Their "creators" can now transmuted them into five myriad species (they have been reduced to the level of animals in intelligence and behavior and these preyed upon each other whenever food is scarce but their common ancestor had existed so far back in time that these mostly compromised of different species):
The Beasts: They are the ones that have tolerate the conditions here on planet Aether and they are the ones that will most likely become animals on this almost barren and empty planet, thus becoming highly specialized species that lived in the same environment.

The Flyer: Very convergently similar to another unrelated species that once lived on Planet Earth three hundred thousand years ago, these animal-men were formerly genetically-engineered pets of the so-called "Creators" but only a few of the most hardiest members survived. Their tooth-derived "beaks" are used for tearing apart dead flesh from its prey. Equipped with a supercharged heart that pumps and controls its blood much more faster and easier than the average heart of a human, this starfish-shaped organ helps them control their power of flight and directly funneling oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream in a supremely efficient way. This meant that the flyers could develop energy consuming adaptations such as large brains without having to give up their power of flight. No other flying human in the galaxy had an adaptation like this. This flying species flew on wing membranes stretch across the last two fingers. But sadly, these creatures are very few in number that they literally are not the true rulers of the skies of Aether.

The Grazer: This animal-man has reduced to the level of grazing herd animals, similar to those once found on Earth, but they are about the size of a pony. A very unintelligent and short creature that is always living in a environment full of predatory carnivores such as the Flyers and Hunters, it camouflages perfectly with the grass thanks to its hair-covered skin. It has two types of teeth: hard blunt teeth at the front of the mouth that are used for biting off the grass properly and flat teeth that mostly help the animal chew the rest of its food. Its teeth can easily fall off and be replaced by another only once in its lifetime.

The Hunter: A carnivorous posthuman that is closely related to the Grazer and Flyer that are very common all over the Planet Aether. It has a special weapon in the form of its long razor sharp canine teeth which are used for stabbing into the thick hides of its prey. It needs neither stealth nor speed since its prey is very slow-moving. It is about the size of a house cat, becoming more active and agile than its slow-moving prey: The Grazers.

The "Gods": Also known as the Creators, these "alien human" beings were the lucky ones and they were the ones responsible for using genetic engineering which is starting to become so common and popular all over the galaxy that newly-created creatures have been created for many different purposes such as aiding in building cities and serving as mounts for the "invaders". They also lived in and outside the newly established colonies of Aether and possibly many other planets teeming with life.

The "Invader": The transmuted offspring of the Second Men and a product of 5 million years of genetic engineering and elective surgery, the newcomers that came to Planet Aether tend to still stay inside the gigantic spaceship that brought them there in the first place. They have also developed a kind of autochthonous madness, believing themselves to be the true sole descendants of humanity and the last true heirs of their long forgotten ancestors. If one of the newcomers ever want to leave, they do so by riding on a new genetically-engineered creature called the "Mount".

The "Builder": This giant, now under the control of the invaders, have been forced to build cities and establish colonies for them, doing what their masters want them to do.

The "Mount": Looking like an weaker and smaller version of the Grazer, these beings, like the builders, are also under the control of the invaders, telepathically directly into the central nervous system of its body.
